Hope he pulls through :001:

Sad news, hope he gets through it all.

He is a good player and would definetly have been one of Paraguay's main men at the world cup :001:

Brings back memories of this guy....

On 2 July 1994, Escobar was shot outside "El Indio" bar, located in a Medell?n suburb. It was reported that the killer shouted "Goal!" (mimicking South American sporting commentators for their calls after a goal is scored) for each of the 12 bullets fired.[2]

The murder was widely believed to be a punishment for the own goal.[3] It is not clear whether the murderer was one of the gambling syndicates who had bet large amounts of money on Colombia to qualify for the second round. The BBC issued an apology the following day after its pundit Alan Hansen commented on another match that "the Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that."[4]

Escobar's funeral was attended by 120,000 people and a statue was built in his honour. Every year people honour Escobar by bringing photographs of him to matches.[1]

I was at Columbia v Tunisia in 1998 and the Columbia fans had a huge banner up with his picture on it. See when people die, you know how everyone always says "Oh, he was an amazing person and everybody loved him" even if it's not true? With Escobar I think he genuinely was Columbia's best defender for years and was one of the few in the 94 squad that actually performed the way he was supposed to. However, are gangsters sooooo unreasonable that they will murder a footballer whom was trying his best, for what was clearly an accident, or was he involved in something that he shouldn't have been? Always wondered what the point was in killing him.

Interesting angle, and a valid question.
