Biggest Test So Far for Cashless Caley Jags

Without doubt, this is our sternest test of the new season as St Johnstone come North on Tuesday night for a 7:45 kick-off at the Caledonian SarensPSG Stadium with the teams occupying the top two places in League Cup Group F. East Fife host The Rose on Tuesday night with both teams having already defeated an out of sorts Morton who are pointless after three games. The group stages conclude on Saturday afternoon with Morton at home to the Caley Jags and St Johnstone hosting East Fife. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's good preparation before we meet Dunfermline in the opening encounter of the Championship season on 1st August.

We have added striker Miller Keir from Turriff United to our squad. Miller, 19, was the Highland League’s top goalscorer last season, scoring 31 goals in all competitions. In his debut season at The Haughs, he finished as the Highland League’s top goalscorer and was named Highland League Young Player of the Year. He also swept the board at Turriff United’s end-of-season awards, collecting the Players’ Player of the Year, Players’ Young Player of the Year and Fans’ Young Player of the Year honours.

Inverness eased to a comfortable win over Linlithgow Rose at the weekend playing on the front foot and scoring two first half goals through Ryan Duncan and Noa Boutin. That win tucked us in behind leaders St Johnstone in Group F. New signing, defender Kerr Smith was an unused substitute in this game. Cameron Binnie stopped this one turning into a rout with a string of saves.

In our opening fixture we laboured to a 1-1 draw at home to East Fife. Adam MacKinnon saving our blushes with an overtime strike before we went on to win the penalty shoot-out 5-3.

Striker Miller Keir joins us on a 2 year deal and could feature in the squad for the St Johnstone game.

St Johnstone beat Morton 3-0 on Saturday with this squad on duty. Jamie Gullan with two penalties (62' pen, 89' pen) and former Caley Jag Reece McAlear (72') with a trademark screamer.

They also defeated Rose with two first half goals from Kai Fotheringham (8') and Ruari Paton (30'). Cammy Binnie the Rose keeper was in defiant mood in this game as well and kept another second half clean sheet.

The Perth side have yet to concede.

Alfie Stewart Stunner Sinks Saints

Group F's top two clashed at the Caledonian Stadium with the hosts new signing, Miller Keir on the bench as was defender Kerr Smith. Morgan Bates was missing, presumed injured. St Johnstone had former Caley Jags players Reece McAlear and Logan Chalmers on the bench but former defender Morgan Boyes was handed a start.

An Alfie Stewart forty yarder was the difference between the sides as Inverness hit the top of Group F

Inverness opened the scoring with a stunning forty yard shot after when Alfie Stewart picked the pockets of two midfielders after keeper Steward had come well out of his box to mop up a loose ball. His next move saw him float a precise ball high into the net from forty yards. Take a bow wee Alfie. Terrific strike. Perth called up the cavalry around the hour mark but Inverness also looked dangerous on numerous sorties forward. A late flurry saw Sam Stanton clip the top of the bar with a powerful strike and a Josh Fowler header hit the bar with two minutes left, but it was Inverness that took the three points to top the Group F. East Fife beat the Rose 3-1 tonight to leap frog St Johnstone into second place.

Overall, this was a thoroughly deserved win for the Caley Jags

A thoroughly enjoyable evening and a well deserved win.

We were by far the better team in the first half and with better finishing and luck would have been three up.

St Johnstone tried hard to get back on it but we saw it through and even created moments of our own in the latter stages.

Well done to all involved. It is wrong to pick anyone out but Stewart’s finish was excellent and our midfield gelled, whilst our defence did its job and we looked dangerous going forward.

Young Keir did not look out of place when he came on during the second half.

Tonight was a definite cause for optimism about the league season ahead but let’s not get carried away.

A great effort from all the team tonight, good passing, controlled the backline were solid, controlled the midfield, and pressed forward. A more open game than against East Fife, and wow what a strike from Alfie Stewart

Decent chance of getting through to the knockout stages of this tournament, which is pretty rare for us especially in recent years.
