Butcher is set to cut loose again - Caley Jags ready to repeat successful formula of all-out attack after that stunning Ayr raid By Stephen Kasiewicz Published: 28/10/2009 Caley Thistle manager Terry Butcher will stay with all-out attack when Morton visit Inverness on Saturday after his team scored five times at Ayr United last weekend. Dougie Imrie and Richie Foran started on the flanks in midfield, but Butcher encouraged them to join Dani Sanchez and Adam Rooney to form a four-pronged forward line. It worked spectacularly at Somerset Park, with Inverness were 4-1 up at the interval through goals from Foran (2), Rooney and Imrie. Former Motherwell and Southend player Foran claimed his hat-trick by scoring again in the second period. Now Butcher is prepared to use the same system when the Greenock men travel north this weekend. He said: ?Sometimes you reach a stage during the season where you need to change things around a bit as a coach. ?We asked them to do something a little bit different and they did that. I think they enjoyed the fact there was a freshness and a challenge about it. It was a good, attacking positive system. We felt that there is no point in being tentative now. ?At home, particularly, we have been worried about all sorts of things but now is the time to be more positive and have a go. ?When you look at the team we played at the weekend, we had four forwards, with little Dani Sanchez tucked in behind Adam Rooney. ?When we broke we looked ruthless and dangerous and that we could score with every chance. ?It was really positive and we have to take it forward into Saturday. There is no reason why we should fear playing anyone at home.? Butcher has backed his forwards to keep up their goalscoring exploits in the coming weeks. He added: ?The players certainly adapted well and I think sometimes as a player if you are given a bit of freedom, especially as a striker, then you relish that opportunity. ?We have good supply from the likes of Russell Duncan and David Proctor in midfield, who can pass the ball well ? as can the full backs. ?As long as you have movement up front you have a chance. ?The players certainly made it work. You can throw systems at players and ask them to do things and be rigid about it. ?But, particularly with the front four, I told them to play as they saw it. ?I gave them their starting positions and they took it from there.? "The only concern is that the old middle aged guy with the dodgy goatee has to tend to the mentally ill of Lancashire this weekend but I am reliably informed that he wil be back on the terraces in Tinkerville.

To be honest - if he didnt - he would be slaughtered. The system and personnel at Ayr is difficult to play against - Rooney will pull away two defenders most of the time which leaves space for Imrie and Foran - both playing wide and hopefully give the room fer Sanchez to play his magic - Proctor and Duncan are the holders and allow the likes of Tokely to go forward.

Sounds like Bassa the Hun has got his masonic trouser legs crossed - Living in Chorley it is the BIG news that Paul Mariner has teamed up with Paul Sturrock and it would appear that a certain John Wark has turned down the chance to join him but a certain Alan Brazil has joined the fray. I would bet my last dollar that Butchers next job will be at Ipswich - with Burley !!! That is the only way that we will get compensation. REMEMBER THIS POST - FOR ONCE IT IS 100% ACCURATE B)

Dear Middle-aged guy with the dodgy goatee, and teeth like Dracula's... Assuming the team do put in the same effort and desire at home, there won't be any problems with the home support getting behind them... A 5:1 win away from home is a massive result in any football team's language. Providing TB has the sense to leave half of his new signings out, and stick with guys that produced that result - and also sticks with the attack-minded set-up and tactics, this team is more than capable of mounting a serious challenge to those around the top of this league. We were singing from the moment the team came out - we started chanting for Esson within seconds of his feck up. The team inspires the fans but it is also vice versa.

post match interviews
Butcher said: ?I?m not used to being 4-1 up at half-time ? I?ve never had that before in my career ? but it?s a very nice feeling. ?Ayr then came back at us in a 10-minute spell and caused us a few problems so we had to be professional and get the next goal to kill the game off. ?Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would come away and win 5-1. It?s the third of a three-match unbeaten run with seven out of nine points so it?s come at the right time for us. We had a bit of luck and got the rebounds and ricochets.? Butcher praised Ryan Esson for recovering from his howler which allowed Mark Roberts to cancel out Foran?s opener. The goalkeeper sliced a clearance straight at the former Partick forward who could not miss an empty net. Butcher said: ?It was important to recover after Ryan?s error and full credit to him for doing so. He got a big round of applause from all the players in the dressing-room. He showed great professionalism. ?Their goal could have knocked us down, but we responded in the right way and got some more goals. We changed it around a wee bit and it?s nice when it works and all your forwards score. But it?s not all down to good luck. We worked very hard with great movement, pace and experience.? "The away support was magnificent but it baffles me why they follow the lead of a middle aged man with a dodgy goatee" Butcher admits he is baffled why Caley Thistle cannot repeat their unbeaten away form at home where they are still unable to buy a win. He said: ?It?s a phenomenal away record and it seems to suit us. But how do you turn that into a winning system at home? ?We have tried everything different, maybe I?ll take the players to a hotel the night before the next home game, I don?t know. It?s bizarre one week we do so well and not the next. We have got to find some consistency and hopefully this will be the start of it. It?s a good three points which keeps us in touch with the best.? The manager hailed provider in chief Sanchez and said: ?We?ve got our good results this season when he?s been in the team. He?s so small he is hard to get off the ball but he?s got vision and makes us tick.?

Is Mid table Right place to be?
To me it is all about being in the title race to the bitter end - yesterdays preformance made us forget the Niculae debacle - but the muppets mismanagement may still come back and haunt / flaunt us. :( Wish we could sort out the off field issues as well.

Foran and Rooney ?
They are different players - put it like this Rooney reminded me of a Hislop yesterday - hope he turns in to a Bayne. Sanchez has reminded me of a poor mans Juanjo but there was a wee touch of Bingham about him yesterday. Give him some space and sit back and enjoy.

Butcher
Well - I think that we did go with a "plan" and that was to keep it tight at the back - basically ensuring that we had at least five outfield players behind the ball at all times - Granty and Bulvitis were evidently two and only went forward fer dead ball ploys - Golly was evidently told to stick and Proctor and Duncan holding as well - that gave Rosscoe a bit more freedom to move forward. It looked like the ploy was to play Imrie and Foran as wide as possible which gave Sanchez the room he requires. I thought Rooney did a great job and practically kept their two central defenders on the back foot all the game. But to me it was the clear direction to try and play football and go forward that was the most encouraging - and not to shut up shop but to go fer the jugular - I was fearful that we would go in to a more defensive mode when we equalised but we went fer it. It was to me clearly an orchestrated game plan - the players appeared to relax, they were able to play to their strengths and it was pure enjoyment. And lets face it - we had a wee albeit vocal following yesterday - We have surpassed it on many previous occasions but there was the old "togetherness" / the craic with the players and the management. And lets say a few positives about the stewarding as well. The players were given freedom to express themselves and enjoyed the experience - the same can be said fer the fans. Bring on the Tinks :(

I know that it is one game but yesterday filled me with more confidence than I have had in a long time. If we can put the same effort and desire in at home - then we can only go upwards - Shurely Morton and Airdrie provide us with a chance to re-establish the home performance. And as fer the fans - get behind the team and Butcher. Leave the criticism to the pub or the forum - would love to know what TB and the players thought of the support yesterday.

Foran and Rooney ?
Still doubt whether they can hit it off as a pairing up front - Have to admit that I have always felt that Foran would be the preferred lone striker BUT Ayr has got me thinking. Foran did look good playing to the left in the SPL and he was awesome there yesterday. He has the ability to track back and defend but he has the experience and know how to run into spaces and behind defenders. Ayr were more wary of Imrie, Sanchez and Rooney yesterday and did they pay the price. Rooney is more clumsy but he does hold the line well enuff and he gets stuck in, giving the defenders little time and making space fer the likes of Imrie, Sanchez and Foran.
