Sorry to be an anorak but Gilbert Ross had ST 444 on a Rover 3.5 litre; Kit Myers had JST 90 on an MGB GT V8. He ran the Inverness Stewart Plant operation and was a keen rally driver. Kit Myers was killed along with two others (one his brother) when his plane crashed near Drumnadrochit on 25 May 1974.

EVA 11 - now that brings back memories of Academy Street in 1970s. I remember the number on a white Renault 5. Apologies for straying off-topic but Inverness in those days had some notable cherished number plates.

Gilbert Ross served in Burma and was chairman of the local Burma Star Association which held its annual dinner in the Station Hotel which Lord Louis Mountbatten attended on a number of occasions.

There were a few of these in the town - Gilbert Ross on Academy Street, Mitchells on Hamilton Street (also owned by Gilbert Ross I think), Fraser & McColl on Eastgate in more than one shop there, Campbells on Queensgate and then later came Farm & Household in the old James Ferries garage which used to sell Triumph cars. When Gilbert Ross's shops in Inverness he concentrated his business in his other shop up in Invergordon. Then there was Inverness Tool Distributors (also known as the Saw Service) at the bottom of Church Street which moved down to Harbour Road and became the H.I.S. of today. Any more to add ?

Yes, he played in Inverness twice - first with Taste at the Caley Park in 1970 or 1971, then with his own band in the Caley Ballroom in 1973. Support band for this gig was Greenslade who were prog band and quite a contrast to Rory.

The ladies hairdresser next to the Locarno was Stewarts - it was an upmarket sort of place or that was the impression it gave. I remember it had a very well done window display when Princess Margaret got married. The Maison Victoria, a gents hairdresser and tobacconist, was in between Stewarts and the Locarno.

Don't think that the Highlands is alone in being regarded as a backwater by the BBC Central Belters in Glasgow - the Borders is treated no differently and the local BBC station is a joke.

Myrtle's on Lombard Street made very good pies indeed. Andersons at the bottom of Academy Street had some nice cakes. Burnetts eventually moved into the Myrtle's shop and they took over the Macrae & Dick TV and radio shop on Academy Street in the early 1970s.

Another Sneck character who was well known in Eastgate was Smelly Simpson who lived (I think) in a tumbledown and overgrown cottage on the edge of the Culcabock Golf Course on Diriebught Road. I have no idea why he was called Smelly as he never smelt any time I was ever near him. He used to cycle around town with carrier bags on the handlebars. He was a regular customer in Rosie's Cafe on Stephen's Brae and latterly frequented McDonalds. If I recall correctly he was assaulted in there one night but the manager said he was a regular customer who just came in for a cup of tea and never caused any trouble at all.

If they were still there we could always shop in Barney's or Hetty's to keep trade in Sneck or am I edging off-topic ?

The memory of Saturday afternoon and the loss of a fellow Caley Thistle fan will be with me forever. The family and friends of John will be very much in my thoughts and prayers over the coming days.

A really sad and tragic end to a lovely afternoon in Ayrshire which started being all about a football match. Very distressing. Charles - I still have an old (late 1960s) Royal Burgh of Inverness Street and Householders' Directory which lists at 57 Haugh Road both The Haugh Social Club and James Woodhouse & Son. Was the latter a store for the Woodhouse furniture store on High Street (at the top of Inglis Street) perhaps, but before it became the disco ?

The Fairfield Dye Works was owned by a Mr Hope who lived on Glenurquhart Road, opposite the new part of the County Buildings. It was managed by Jimmy McEwan who went on to manage the whisky shop on Bridge Street. Anyone remember the York Drive Laundry on Bellfield Park too ?

The Accies just haven't been good enough by a long way this season. They may struggle to come back up to the SPL at the first time of asking.

Aye, it's been a poor season really. Rangers will probably win it (it's theirs to lose) but their team has been cobbled together at times. Celtic have some really good players but seem to bottle it, e.g. against us !

I certainly hope he'll stay. Yes, the grass isn't always greener as young Mr Rankin has perhaps found out.
