Would have been delighted with any sort of win tonight, so a comfortable victory with a few goals is a very pleasant surprise.

I don’t think that’s fair comment. We were not in a position to match the wages on offer to him from elsewhere and even if we did, he would probably not have chosen to drop a level when he could stay in the Premier. (As an aside he has no goals from 17 appearances at Well, whose manager has said he is looking for new strikers.....)

We have only managed 2 wins against full-time sides this season, which is nothing short of pathetic. The last was in October. We have no wins at all against the 3 sides we need to overtake if we are to get 4th place, even though we have a much higher wage budget than any of them. Putting aside the games against a side who are hopelessly out of their depth, we are having a pretty abysmal season.

2017 was one of those horrible anus thingies with a well deserved relegation followed by a dismal start to the new season. But after we tightened up at the back there was at least a glimmer of light at the end of the annus. Looking back, I see we won our first fixture of each of the last 3 years, so let’s keep that going and get 2018 off to a good start.

Last season we went into new year with 16 points from 21 games, County are a very similar 17 from 22. We had a rookie manager (perhaps a terrible manager) and long term injuries to several of our highest paid players. What’s County’s excuse?
