  8. Because of where I live, I get my fill of this campaign every day on TV and Radio. In fact, more Canadian TV viewers watched the US debates than watched the Canadian ones .... and judging by the turnout, some Canadians who are more interested in the US election probably didnt realise there was a general election in this country 3 days ago !!! I have watched all the debates and tend to listen to "talk radio" on my way home from work. Watching and listening to all this, the point has been made and several pundits agree that the financial crisis is probably the best thing that could have happened to Obama. According to many, the colour of his skin is simply (and quite rightly) not an issue for most voters in this election as they are more worried about the economy and the dollar in their pocket than Obama's ethnicity, background or heritage. Many seem to be getting swayed by the fact that a vote for McCain might well be a vote for 4 more years of Bush-like policy despite his claims to the contrary. Obama is a pretty strong debater on domestic policy and this, and the general loathing for Bush is playing right into his hands. If on the other hand, things were "normal" and there had been a (new) foreign crisis, terrorist attack or national security problem then I think McCain would have fared a lot better. Inevitably there will be those who do make it about race, and I agree, that some of these pinheads will see voting for a black President as a step too far .... just like voting for a woman president might have been for others if Hillary had been chosen. Hopefully, these folks are in the vast minority !!! Many over here initially thought asking Palin to be his running mate was a masterstroke from McCain. I thought it was a disaster waiting to happen from the very beginning. His strong point at that time was countering Obama's "change" slogan by playing up Obama's inexperience, yet he - a man with known medical issues - chooses someone even more inexperienced to take over in the event of his death or incapacity. It has been obvious that every single speech Palin has given was pre-written for the vice presidential candidate regardless of who that was going to be and she has simply added a couple of somewhat cheesy adlibs to each one. She has made several gaffes such as not understanding what the "Bush Doctrine" was, or making out that she had foreign policy experience because Alaska was geographically closer to those pesky Russians than any other american governor's state, or being asked questions in non-scripted interviews where she simply could not answer the questions. Her record in Alaska as governor and her small town mayorship record have also followed her. One thing that caused (and still causes) quite a few ripples over here was her non-support for a bill that would outlaw the practice of making women pay for their own rape kits after being sexually assaulted. According to a few credible websites, her police chief in Wasilla disagreed and was fired and replaced with someone who agreed with her ..... I agree that some of this - hockey mom goes from outhouse to whitehouse in less than 12 years - would be funny if it werent for the fact that America has a position as the defacto leaders of the western world but while McCain reminds me of a genial (but senile) old uncle, or one of the actors who played gorbachev/reagan in Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes" video, she just scares me ..... Despite his own inexperience, I think Obama would surround himself with people who do have it (quite possibly including both Clintons - who want to stay in the limelight), and would be willing to see shades of grey instead of just the Bush line of "if you are not with us, you are against us" when dealing with countries like Iran, North Korea, Cuba etc. My one fear for Obama is assasination, and has been since I first heard him make a speech several years ago. He is obviously an inspiration to many people of different backgrounds, but some of the racist pinheads mentioned above may get more than a little annoyed that the dream so eloquently spoken of by Martin Luther King 40+ years ago may be elevated to a new level with Barack speaking just as eloquently in the WhiteHouse. On top of this, his agenda for change may annoy others on the inside of things in Washington. Depending on what he does and the stances he takes to things like defence, covert ops, relations with countries like Cuba, N Korea, Iran etc it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he might find himself emulating another President who was seen as young, vibrant, eloquent and dynamic - JFK !!! Lets just hope he gets in, does well and we all feel good enough to hold up signs in 2012 that say Vote Obama !!!
  9. Obama for me all the way ........ McCain doesnt inspire confidence despite the "sacrifices" he may have made for his country in the past and as for his running mate, who would be only a heartbeat away from the presidency if he won, some of her views (and past deeds in office in Alaska) are just plain scary !!!!!
  10. I will need to find the original photo. I can remember most, but all the names are n the back of it !
  11. Don't see why ...... Inverness' average temperature ranges from 3C - 15C, Norrkoping's average is from -2C to 16C [source: Weatherbase]
  12. the IHS 1st XV from 1981-82. A few well known faces in there including Colin McNeil (Judge Dredd Artist and designer of Eastgate Centre logo), Mike Edwards of STV and T.A. fame, and of course myself
  13. As I said above, his dealings with ICT didnt exactly endear him to us but reading a few of the online articles make me think we would have had a different opinion of him when he was alive had he been our chairman. First his own words - "You can change your wife, your house, your car but you can never change your team. Chairmen come and go, boards come and go but the fans remain. They are the one true constant. I've just been a custodian of the club." Then, a gesture that speaks volumes for what his own fans thought of him ... "Earlier this year, at the suggestion of United fans, one of the stands at Tannadice was named in his honour and thousands of United fans wore One Eddie Thompson T-shirts at the CIS Cup final against Rangers in March."
  14. ...but never settled. :thumb04: nahh, just trying to keep one step ahead of the bailiffs LOL
  15. Much as he could be a figure of both fun and frustration to some of us for his dealings with ICT in the transfer market, we cant argue over his passion for DUFC. Condolences go to his family, and especially to his daughter who lost her husband the other day in a bike crash. What a week for her.
  16. :thumb04: Thanks for not posting it. Despite the fact that a particular story appears to be in wide circulation verbally, we would just have had to remove it like other unprovable/unfounded rumours that have been posted here in the recent past.
  17. I think the reality is somewhere in the middle ...... No player who thinks he can perform at a higher level will want to tie himself down for a 4 or 5 year contract unless it is at one of the top teams in the SPL or EPL and conversely, no club at our level (financially speaking) can really afford to offer a deal so sweet that a player with the undoubted potential of someone like Black will sign on for 5 years. The reality is that we will continue to offer 1, 2 and at best 3 year deals to our players in the hope that some will be like Tokely and Munro and basically stay with us their whole career and others will be on a long enough contract that we will see some money for them when they undoubtedly move on.
  18. Trials for Man Utd and Borussia Dortmund after the U17 championships in 1999. not signed by either, not sure why. Work permit issues perhaps? (as suggested above) has been playing in Sweden since 2003, a Scottish winter will be no problem for this guy !!! Djebi-Zadi came on trial at the same time as Juanjo and technically, Rooney was also a trialist although it ended up looking like ICT were the ones on trial as Brewster basically said he would sign him if he wanted to come !!!
  19. I would actually trust Brew on this one. He has invited many trialists to the TCS since he took over and most have been evaluated and sent packing .... if this one is up to scratch then maybe he will be asked to stay, if not, Brewster will send him back down the A9 (or over the North Sea). Looking at his club history, its not as bad as mentioned above .... 2000 (age 17) - Signed by Liberty Professionals of Ghanaian Premier League 2001 (age 18) - Loaned to Israeli Premier League side Hapoel Petativa for the season 2001-2003 - Went back to Liberty Professionals at end of loan 2003 (age 20) - Signed for Swedish first division side Vasteras (equiv to Div 2 SFL). played 17 games (+6 as sub). Scored 3, 2 assists, 4 yellow cards. 2004 (age 21) - Signed for Swedish "Superettan" side Friska Viljor (equiv to Div 1 SFL). played 23 games (+10 as sub). Scored 5, 3 assists, 4 yellow cards. 2005 - 2006 (age 22/23) - signed for Swedish "Superettan" side Assyriska Foreningen just after they had been relegated from the "Allsvenskan" (equiv to SPL). According to wikipedia (i know, pinch of salt) he played 48, scored 5. 2007 (age 24) - Signed for Swedish "Superettan" side IF Sylvia. Again, Wikipedia states 25 appearances, 1 goal. So it looks like he started in Ghana, had one major club, went on loan as a youngster and then went back to them at the end of the loan. After that he headed for Sweden where he has played for 4 different sides, each of which seems to have been slightly better than the one before ... although his last club appear to have just been relegated from the Swedish "Superettan" and replaced by the team he was with the year before when they were relegated. Looks like they bounced back into the Superettan at the first attempt !!! The only site I could translate into English said his ambition is to play in La Liga or the English Premier League, he likes Reggae music and his favourite drink is Fanta or water (much water). Maybe a little lost in translation on the Friska site but according to them he "Come to FV for the season 2004 from V?ster?s SK Soccer. Abandoned FV for Assyriska FF after the season in 2004."
  20. Put a decent offer on the table for Black and I would hope he will seriously consider it. I could be totally wrong, but reading between the lines of all the various rumblings of the past few weeks it seems he is settled at ICT and given a decent offer would commit for another 2 or 3 years. Getting Blackie signed up might also be the catalyst for a few others to put pen to paper .....
  21. Have heard of this campaign for many years as it was gathering steam ...... Bottom line, I dont care where you were born, raised, or where you called home for parts of your life. If you signed up, were accepted by the MOD, and then went on to serve with (and perhaps die for) the British army then that should be good enough to earn you a passport. The Gurkhas - who have a long history of doing just that - are at the very top of that list IMHO
  22. MGS2 it was .... and Medal of Honour is right as well ! Dont think I have touched the PS2 for about a year ... may go and fire up FIFA for a while this afternoon LOL.
  23. Only console I ever had was PS2 and I havent updated to PS3 yet so I would have to go with ..... Metal Gear Solid (cant remember version - partly set on an oil rig or something like that) Some WWII thing where the first scene was landing on the beaches at Normandy both of these were about 6 or 7 years ago so forgive my vagueness I did buy a PS2 over here and probably the best game I played on it was Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
  24. Great Rock N Roll Swindle - Sex Pistols Crocodiles - Echo and the Bunnymen The Crossing - Big Country Parallel Lines - Blondie Kings of the Wild Frontier - Adam and the Ants
  25. judging from some of the comments Richard Gordon has read out in recent weeks, there are a LOT of people who appreciate the new service.
