I think Butcher is looking to go for a similar signing policy that Motherwell used a few years ago, bringing in young guys from England's lower leagues. It worked out well for, er, 'Well they got players like Giles Coke, Chris Humphrey, Steven Jennings who did a good job for them and a couple of them were subsequently sold on. The likes of Greg Tansey and Terry Gornell are young but have a few seasons of first team football under their belts - they have more experience than the likes of Adam Rooney, Lee Cox and Jonny Hayes had when we brought them in. The other side of Motherwell's policy was getting good guys in on loan, in their case Jutkiewitz and Ruddy. I don't think that ALdred seems to be of that standard. Hopefully we can get Doran back, Butcher mentioned this towards the end of last season. One issue with this approach is we might not get players tied up until after the start of the season, which isn't ideal.

The BBC Gossip column is usually full of pash but it states that St Mirren are looking at Stephen Hughes and Jim Paterson - that's two players who would improve our squad, especially Hughes.

I don't think you need to put 'allegedly' into this story. The link says "Ian Black in drugs bust" - no-one is disputing that Ian Black (and others) were arrested for suspicion of possessing drugs, ie a drugs bust.
