    Delighted with the win today. Had forgotten what it feels like. It was a battling win, not a great game. The ball was richocheting around as in a pinball machine, and neither team played with much structure or control. I was surprised at how poor Arbroath were. We made only about six chances, and scored with three of them - two of them in the first few minutes. As I have said, I think that we go out and play much the same every week, and sometimes we get the breaks. Well, today we did. Disappointed with everyone hoofing long balls towards our 5'7" strikers. Even Cammy MacKay was doing it, instead of rolling it out as he often does. I thought that we had obviously been instructed to get the ball as far away from our goal as possible. But a win is a win, especially welcome after three months. Well done to everyone!

    There were reports during the lockdown, based on analysis of lots of scores, that playing at home wasn't such an advantage as in normal times. A possible explanation was the absence of a large crowd mostly cheering on the home team. In addition to the effect on the players, it also seemed that, with no pressure from a crowd, referees were less likely to award free kicks and the like to the home team. That's the nearest that we will ever be to illustrating and even measuring the difference that a large, vocal support can make.

    So it's very odd that we can't score goals! Yes, the defence could be improved, but I still maintain that the real problem is at the other end of the pitch. If we can't score goals, we will never win games.

    And a piece about him in the sports section of yesterday's (Saturday's) "Times". He is youth coach at Charlton, and has never actualy gone back to stay in Ukraine. (You'll remember that his late daughter, Elena, was the UK's no 1 female tennis player for a while.) Interestingly, he is proud of what the USSR was - "better than Russia is now" - and sees himself as both Soviet and Ukrainian, in much the same way that some of us might regard ourselves as British and Scottish. He has a 67yo brother in Kyiv, "armed with hope and a Kalashnikov".

    I did think of suggesting that it would be a matter of courtesy to inform both clubs in advance. However, since the SFA have subsequently pledged solidarity with and support for Ukraine, I think you're on solid ground. Unless either club is secretly owned by an oligarch who is mates with Putin....

    Yes, I had thought of that, but it wouldn't be fair on the Scotland team. My choice would be a postponement, in the hope that a genuine Ukraine team could play some time. Obviously there would have to be a time limit on that.

    For once, the decision to hold the World Cup finals in November/December might be useful. The obvious thing to do would be to postpone the Path A playoffs until after the end-dates of the countries' scheduled domestic seasons - though it's unlikely that Ukraine will complete theirs. Accommodation and training facilities in Qatar is presumably already reserved for whoever gets through - since those who have already qualified will have booked theirs. I do hope to God that there isn't some Neanderthal numpty in the SFA who is going to come out next week and insist that either the matches go ahead in March or Ukraine gets disqualified. Knowing the SFA, I would put money on there being some eejits there who are actually thinking that. I see that we are also down to play Ukraine in June and September in the UEFA Nations League, so it could be a busy summer!

    Looking back on iPlayer, it's not quite as good as I had thought, but the goal was still an example of the directness of play from the new guys that I have mentioned once or twice. Samuels cut inside, then passed towards three of our players in fairly central positions on the edge of the box. (Three? How did that happen? ) In that type of situation, either one of your own players receives it, in a dangerous position, or you may well get lucky with a mistake by a defender. The latter is what happened in this case. Play the percentages, make direct moves and passes into dangerous areas, and you will make your own luck. I agree about Pearson. I thought he did well. Of all the new guys, Hardy is the one who has impressed me least - though to be fair, I don't think he has had as much game-time as the others.

    Don't worry, we're not going to fall out - you are as entitled to your views as I am to mine. But I am always amazed that people think that football clubs are run using a limitless supply of Monopoly money. Clubs do go into administration and liquidation. All it needs is for a bank to say "You've gone beyond the bounds of our agreement. We are calling in your debt.". As for Dodds being loaded - what was he at the BBC? A part-time pundit for BBC Scotland? (I'm in England, so I don't know.) Would have paid peanuts - did he do other media work as well?

    Have to disagree. I pointed out on several occasions that we had one of the lowest "goals against" totals in the table, whereas our "goals for" was not good. Strengthening the defence would basically be hoping for 1-0 wins, since our attack was toothless. Since then, of course, injuries and loss of form have changed the picture. Some of the new guys looked as though they had much-needed energy and directness, but sadly that hasn't resulted in goals. As for getting rid of BD and his assistants before the end of their contracts: where do you think the money is going to come from to pay them off and attract new people? And who are you going to attract when you sack people for being third in the table?

    You may be using the wrong word when you say "investor". Certainly if you mean investing to obtain a financial return. Owning - or putting money into - a football club is one of the quickest and more surefire ways of losing money that exists. Given that we are just emerging from a global pandemic which has hit many businesses hard, and are also coming to terms with the problems of Brexit, which are especially hitting those who exported to the EU, then the number of "wealthy investors" who would currently be interested in losing shedloads of money must be very small. And they have probably just had their assets frozen by the government Geography comes into it, too, as has been discussed here before. Inverness is over 100 miles away from the next nearest large towns, more than that from the Central Belt, and may as well be on the moon as far as many English are concerned. So you are basically looking for a local wealthy businessperson who is happy to lose a lot of money, just for the kudos. They do exist, of course - we just have to look to Dingwall - but there can't be many of them. Those of you who live in the area could probably name those who might have the resources. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see someone pump money into the club, provided they also hired decent management and coaches. But, at this particular time, I can't see where they are coming from.
