Martin Dowden BBC Sport Scotland at the Caledonian Stadium Posted at 20:33 "What a transformation in fortunes for Anthony Stokes. Two defensive blunders and all of a sudden the striker is chasing a hat-trick. The Scottish Cup holders look to be relinquishing their grip on the trophy."

hopefully it's so long john.......... the luckiest manager in Scottish football history. took over a team that just missed out on Europe due to a last game of the season defeat at dingwall. got lucky in his run to Europe as after xmas Dundee utd went into freefall and st johnstone were just too far back to catch us. got even luckier in the Scottish cup semi, we should have been 2-0 down and a down to 10 men for the second half. lucky in the final to be playing a " lesser team", although they certainly didn't look like that in the 2nd half. lucky a headed clearance up the park let Watkins in on goal where a weak shot was palmed out by the goal keeper into the path of a player who had legged it from his own box on the million to one chance he would get the chance he got. when he lost players like mackay, shinnie and Watkins he replaced them with dud midfielders while everyone was shouting for a striker to be bought. if it wasn't for the chairman finding miles storey we would still be waiting for hughes striker lopez " to come good". when we won the cup all the celebrations were done at the corner flag area. everyone from there to the half way line, probably half of our support that day, were waiting cameras in hand to get a photo. every cup final I ever saw on tv has the winning team showing the cup to all supporters wherever they were in the ground yogi walked from the corner to the half way line, head down, hearing hundreds of fans screaming for a photo, ignored them all and at the half way line gave a couple of fist pumps to the Falkirk fans. will never forgive him for that.

the sj chairmans statement is football speak for " if you want our manger it will be big bucks compo" if hughes is next on their list not a problem let him go. we were playing good footie up until end of january last season. won 4 games out of last 15. beating du twice, relegated st Mirren and Dundee. we were lucky du were in free fall and sj were too far behind to catch up for Europe through league place. this season we were crying out for a striker and hughes bought instead 6-7 midfielders,.... oops sorry he actually thought lopez was a striker. eventually the chairman took matters into his own hands and found miles storey according to hughes "Miles Storey is rapid quick," he said. "It's all credit to the chairman who came in with the name actually. hughes picked up his manager of the year, Europe and Scottish cup from a team built by butcher. if he does go we could try to get the new Liverpool manager jurgen klopp's brother........ So the departure of Billy MaKay wasn't after all the same kind of mortal wound as the similar exit of David Bingham in 2004 was also predicted to become? The old adage "nobody is indispensable" probably applies ... Although management will need to get their thinking caps on for January if Miles does goes back to his parent club (along with Silva to his) ... Especially if, by that stage, we've put County to the sword again and are looking at a League Cup semi-final at worst. agree. worrying though when all knew mackay was leaving last xmas hughes could only come up with lopez as a replacement. thankfully the chairman came up trumps scrape from hughes comments in the "contract talks" on bbc sport yesterday "Miles Storey is rapid quick," he said. "It's all credit to the chairman who came in with the name actually.

amazing how people see football. lopez was in the sunday mail premiership team of the day scoring 9/10. now if hughes started talking him up Aberdeen would come and take him off our hands.... hopefully- 59 replies

this preview of the SJ game on bbc sport sums it up. heres hoping we ditch the passing the ball to death tactics and see a shot at goal sometime soon "If John Hughes hadn't made a sufficient public show of cooling expectations for his club this season, Caley Thistle's toothless opening-day defeat by Motherwell did the manager's talking for him. Three shots, none of which tested Connor Ripley in the away goal, showed just how limp Inverness were going forward, while a serious injury to stalwart Gary Warren did little to alleviate the Highland blues. Combative Hughes has been at pains to stress how past achievements count scantly, while Inverness languish well below Aberdeen, Hearts and both Dundee teams in terms of resources and support. His charges have considerable pedigree in punching above their weight, finishing fifth then third in their past two seasons and lifting the Scottish Cup in May. Perilous though it is to draw too many conclusions from early season clashes, however, there is a sense that, with their top-six rivals growing in strength, and key talents Graeme Shinnie, Marley Watkins and Nick Ross departing, this year's campaign could be especially challenging."

wont be losing any sleep over this. we have lost far better players than this squad player hayes, rooney, cowie, robson, wyness....................... and still went on to win the cup. and now shinnie and watkins a tidy player he was never blessed with a finishing touch. apart from the hearts goal 2 stick out for me 1st goal the ball was played in to him, he was nearly on the goal line in the centre of the goal, no one near him. instead of sweeping it into the empty net he ended up scoring a " tam forsyth" cup final goal. 2nd my fav goal from him was wildly applauded by some on here during match day, so obviously not there to see it live, " good to see nick on the score sheet again" was the cry. we attacked down the left and the ball was played across to nick at the front post. he had a fresh air swipe with his left foot and the ball went past him to the defender who in his panic punted the ball away only to hit nick and the ball crossed the line. he knew nothing about it.

John Hughes, I owe you an apology ..........

I will wait a little longer to see how he replaces the players leaving before agreeing he is truly the messiah. although this has been an exceptional season yogi is reaping the rewards for all the work the previous management team put in, finding players and getting them up to inverness. -
Well done to all sitting in the hotel bar in Costa del sol, it is happy hour at moment. .......... It is now

saw Richie foran at inverness leisure pool tonight. was with his son in the kiddies pool, walking about. he has a brace on from his thigh to his ankle, keeping his leg straight and looks like the sides of it are screwed into either side of his knee. didn't recognise him at first, only when he said something to his son I heard the irish accent. not being active he has put on " a bit of weight " cant see him returning this year, but hopefully sometime after.

Matchday Thread Inverness CT -V- St Johnstone
bishbashbosh replied to Scotty's topic in Caley Thistle
obviously not just me Gordon waddell in todays mail on ICT first goal " Just when you have lost the will to live, agonising over whether the second half was even possibly worse than the first the highlanders ..............." as I said above it is just my opinion and apologise if I have caused offence to anyone. hughe's type of football is not for me. hughes quote from the mail "its all about patience. I keep saying it. its not going to be gung ho when you come and watch inverness. its not about that, it's about ball retention" I sign off now and it's goodnight from me- 84 replies

Matchday Thread Inverness CT -V- St Johnstone

just my opinion.............. first half same as Dundee and Kilmarnock ---- tippy tappy sideways backwards nothing happening last 3rd. just a borefest first half. second half started the same for me ------ but then the players noticed yogi leaving the dugout to go to the toilet and tried long punt , eventually ball to doran, cross and hey presto goal............... think the second started with a punt up field also. will find out tonight when I see the highlights.( second half only for highlights) the SJ defence were very comfortable when we were tippy tappying, as we were so slow moving forward they could easily get their two banks of 4 in place, but got flustered when we punted it long. happy clappers please don't bother attacking me with 3 points, winning game, yogi style fantastic, top of the league etc,etc . I am probably just a grumpy old fart who does not know any better, wishing he was watching the quick couter attacking teams of the past. while driving to the game yesterday sportsound, willie miller and tom English were remarking how poor ict were first half against the rangers midweek. kept the ball but did nothing with it. we played the " name, the occasion" and not the team in front of us. since ICT entered the Scottish leagues I have bought at least 2 season tickets a season, 4 up until 2 seasons ago. seriously thinking about giving next season a miss. yes the team are top at present but I am bored to death watching possession football which has turned a 20 odd goals a season striker into an insignificant passenger. when was the last time you looked at the top scorer chart at this time of the season and not see billy mackay in the top half dozen, in fact not heading the chart.- 84 replies

BBC Scotland football pundit Willie Miller Posted at 21:41 "If Inverness play as negatively as they did in the first half it's an easy night for Rangers. I was really disappointed in Caley Thistle in the first half. The centre-halves were playing far too deep. There is no pace there (in Rangers' strikeforce) to bother them. If they had pushed up to the halfway line that pushes their midfield on. You want to come here and impose yourself. They showed that at the end of the game but in the first half they surrendered."

once butcher clears out the debris at hibs and gets his own players in, better players than we have due to a bigger budget I expect to see a resurgent hibs next year not maybe as good as dons or du but certainly swapping places with us eg top six for bottom six

passed the above mentioned ian murray coming out the satadium front door before the st Mirren game on Saturday.

oops forgot to mention hughes masterstroke this evening. he sent on the groundsman with a hose and for the whole of the half time break he watered the end of the pictch we were defending second half. pity he didn't do it on Saturday and maybe billy would have scored when one on one with the keeper instead of nearly hitting the corner flag blaming the ball taking a bobble when he went to hit it.

and so it goes on............ pass, pass, pass, pass, sideways, backwards, forward, backwards, sideways etc.etc.etc when the ball was played to tremarco at left back all that was in front of him was a motherwell player and green grass, not a blue shirt in sight, so turn inside and start the passing again. one ball over the top, two central defenders could not deal with and 1-0 to motherwell which was pretty much all the did in the first half. we have been morphed into hibs under fenlon and Kilmarnock under shields. motherwell played tonight like we used to, soak it up and pounce on the break. tansy on the right wing ?? then right back. please note that pirroutette thing or 360 as my grandson calls it, that you do, stop doing it, every man and his dog knows you are going to do it. practice your ball skills and try to control it first time. second half we were better when Christie and Watkins came on and although a wonderful hit for the goal by Christie we were lucky to get away with warren pushing the motherwell player in the back using both hands to get the ball and start the build up. as we pushed for the winner another break away by them and game over at 2-1. it was reminiscent of the Griffiths/stokes one two's in the recent 5-0 thrashing at parkhead except vigurs didn't blast over the bar. message to boo boo -- to play the narrow, passing game you are playing you need players who can do what you ask them. we have a team of honest laddies who butcher had playing to a system that suited everyone. silk purse and sow's ear come to mind

after going 2-1 up could only see one winner --- us. then tansey gets injured and goes off to be replaced by nick ross. he was swatted away like a fly by st Mirren players. he could not keep the ball which resulted in us having no out ball. wrong substitution this then allowed st Mirren to take charge of the game and should have won 3-2 when only a great save by brill denied them. I have never seen billy score when one on one with the keeper. today put through just beyond half way line and raced in on goal. from my seat in the north stand I could see he tried to curl ball into right side of goal. never see such a pathetic attempt. he was closer to hitting the corner flag than the goal. the team is in freefall. wonder why. maybe that is being discussed in another thread.

watched the chaps shooting in during the warm up on sunday. foran, mackay, Watkins etc were curling the ball into the top corner, bottom corner, scoring with ease and composure. sitting there I was thinking the guys are on form today, usually at Tulloch stadium they blast over the bar, hit row z and even clear the north stand when warming up.( ok they also score some as well) when the game got going, not singling out Watkins but his left foot strike at goal when he nicked the ball with his right foot first and fell on his erse summed up our shooting for me. ross draper has been a culprit in games this season, slicing over the bar from excellent scoring positions. seem to be rabbits in headlights when the chance to shoot presents it's self. main objective hit the target, test the keeper. I remember Duncan, rankin, hayes scoring crackers from distance in games against Dundee utd and the original ranagers.
