Amazing how one penalty save changes our outlook so much! Rumours of us being a good team are somewhat exaggerated. Last 4 games were all against mediocre sides and yet we have no wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats, scoring just 1 goal. Scoring goals remains a problem despite the attacking talent we have in the side, On the plus side. We have become much harder to beat, with a decent style of play and good organisation. For 88 minutes v Serbia we looked like a side that was easily good enough to be at the Euros. It shows what we are capable of. That performance needs to become the norm and not the exception.

There was an interview with Craig Brewster in the (Dundee) Courier yesterday. He is still based down in Sussex and has set up his own coaching school for kids, as well as being Horsham FC’s football development coordinator. Horsham are in the Isthmian league, and this season have been allowed crowds of 600.

Incredible to think that Foran got a manager of the month award (September). Was a trivia question on View from the Terrace that only he and Neil Lennon have won POTM and MOTM for the same club. I would have guessed Brewster, he got several Manager awards, but never got the player one whilst with us.

And yet, his excitement and disbelief at us saving a penalty, in a meaningless match against a lower league side, was many times greater than the commentator describing Marshall’s shoot-out save to put Scotland through to the Euros!

It’s just realism. How many decades is it since Scotland had any world class players like so many other small nations have had, or a single international class striker?

Those of us who have followed the (mis)fortunes of Scotland for many decades know that it’s the hope that kills you, you should never be optimistic. Even when Marshall made that brilliant save of the final penalty, I was half expecting a retake (like the Scotland Women’s team suffered last year).

Some positives to take tonight and in other recent games, and good to have players returning from injury. Results will improve, but that wouldn’t be difficult after just 1 win from our 7 games this season.

With the risk of the season being abandoned at any time, it’s good to have moved a few points clear from bottom spot. Can’t trust the football authorities to act fairly and reasonably if that happens, and you certainly can’t trust other clubs.

Yes it certainly was. Improved when the sun went away, and I think the picture and ball tracking were best when it got dark and all the light was from the floodlights.

The players we had out there did pretty well under the circumstances against a decent side. Without Carson, Vincent and Welsh the midfield had a bit of a soft centre but we still restricted Ayr to a few real chances. Downsides are that our finishing was really poor, and we conceded that goal too easily without putting in a proper challenge from the point we played a poor ball into their box. We know we can be so much better than that, which gives hope for moving up the table by Xmas.
