  1. Advocaat?
  2. He sets such an excellent and industrious attitude/example that his worth is undeniable.
  3. Hi Iain,

I was 15 in 1953 and so I must have been at the Academy at the same time as you. What age would :smile:you have been in 1953?

And what mutual teachers do you feel we may have had?

And what street did you live in? I lived at that time in 46 Dunain Road ands a Sandy Maclean lived right opposite us -he was a taxi driver .

    Cheers, Roderick

  4. Ahhhh! Now it's all coming out in the wash.
  5. As mentioned above, we do experience continuous mini earthquakes in the Pacific North west of the U.S. and Canada but rarely have felt them since they usually manifest only in the form of quivering light pendants of which I've seen at least three over the past 40 odd years since I arrived here. On the Ist of January this year , however, we did get a significant earthquake just off our West coast registering 4.8 on the Richter scale whose epicentre was situated very close indeed. Accompanied by a heavy rumbling noise and shaking of the house for about 15 seconds it has scared a lot of people as a reminder of the "Big One" that scientists say is long overdue and could be as high as 10 or 11, which is colossal, and we should all now prepare ourselves by storing an emergency pack in the house which would last us in terms of food, light, telephone, and heat for at least 72 hours. The house could be destroyed but what follows will be a gigantic Tsunami as depicted in the above movie. So it looks as if all we can do is take all reasonable precautions to survive and ...pray.
  6. Yea, we'll have to wait for him to go back.
  7. IHE -why are these ladies' legs so slim.? Was it from running away from you or chasing you me old fella? Or were supplies hard to find after the 2nd WW? OOOOOOH! I think you were a bit of a lad..
  8. Since that team appears to be in the complete doldrums, one would think that having him back and into the team would be a no-brainer. But, really, I hope he continues to think that way. Now is the time for John H. to urgently suggest that the purse strings be loosened to allow this deal to be completed. But, frankly, IMHO, a loan deal is not going to be of much use for the future fortunes of the team unless it is accompanied by a written promise of a contract on terms after a reasonably short period of time.Otherwise all we are looking at is using Miles to further our very short term fortunes and not allowing us to build meticulously for the future. Just making a genuine, fair, offer to buy would be a more realistic policy it would seem? Also I can't help wonder whether or not their current Manager will be leaving Swindon in the near future, or not?
  9. 2.1/2 men had been one of my favorite, very slick shows until Charlie went on the fritz, had a real barney on U.S TV when he let loose his tirade against his recently- deserted former employers (something about their owing him a couple of million dollars.) Since he was earning over $1,000,000 per half-hour episode ("earning" means "getting") at 7p.m every evening, which he had been doing for the previous many years, you can imagine how very important that sum was to him..i.e. NOT. So there was something else going on in the background and I think that his habit had begun to get to him and the bosses could see the writing on the wall. His timing was always perfect and he never messed up his lines so he was, at least in that sense, a real smoothie who was also a consummate professional and he definitely held that show together. His co-star, Allan, was just as accomplished as Charlie but never received appropriate recognition as the foil to the superstar until many years of playing the loser-type of 2nd fiddle had passed; but he did eventually receive an Emmy on stage (or something like that) for his brilliance in a role that , INMHO, was much more difficult to get down pat than that of a spoilt, self-centred, moneyed, insecure, charmer like Charlie. In fact Charlie is on record as having subsequently complemented Alan in public by saying that in his opinion Alan was "brilliant". With that sentiment I fully agree. After that he has gone downhill fast and where he will eventually end up is anyone's business.....maybe as a foil to Nessie?
  10. Oh you are awful. IHE--but I like you!
  11. I saw the photo of G Shinnie and he looks chuffed to bits. Good on yer , lad.
  12. I used to go there on a dark winter's night to skate on the pond there. I had to trek in a foot of snow along the canal bank from Dunain Road .These nights were memorable. Once I figured that I would cross the road to Loch Na Shanish to skate there as well, caught my skate on a buried twig in the ice, catapulted forward and woke up goodness knows how many minutes or half-hours later , dazed but finding only blood on my face .Good job I was only a light little boy or falling through the ice at either location was always a possibility. I guess ignorance is bliss in situations like this. The ice ponds were deserted so falling through was probably very dangerous and the water must have been freezing cold. Hypothermia would have set in very quickly indeed so aren't you all so glad that old SP made it through the hazards of youth.
  13. There you go! And it must have been in it's Hay Day, eh? Thank you IBM.
  14. Isn't that (Quarry hill) just across the way from Loch Na Shanish?
  15. Nah! I think he has just succumbed to the onset of Glaucoma. I can hardly see the page myself now but that could be too many late nights as well maybe. It's a neat picture though --I have to say that. , although I don't recall exactly where it is situated and all. There you go--- IHE is about to tell me I think...... (Ssht! I hope so). S.P. (Just recovering from his earthquake drama experience a couple of days ago. Phew!--see below--what a way to usher in the new year.
  16. Meaning...?
  17. Since leaving Windows 7 and now running in Windows 10, I don't use Google Chrome unfortunately. I do use IE11 exclusively since I am used to it and really never had a problem before and a tech guy I was working with advised IE . Looking forward to hearing from some more posters, please.
  18. Before I bought my new computer all my log-in information came up automatically for sign-in. Now nothing comes up . The site does suggest that we should store the password which is good--but I have clicked the yes button several times to no avail. Thank ee kindly. S.P.
  19. Decided to dump my 4 year old computer due to constant problems and slow delivery etc. So I bought a HP desktop running windows 10 a week ago from Staples and although I am only now beginning to find things, that I could formerly find at the drop of a hat when I was running Windows 7, I am still unnerved by the difficulties in finding things. How do I find the Control Panel I cried--no answer, and where is the programmes list that used to be available with a click on the left side of the computer just above the start menu-no answer. So I clicked on start and when the left hand list came up (apps and stuff) I clicked on "control panel", both right and left clicks, and got nowhere. The shortcuts I had placed on my desktop now go nowhere and they appear to be empty. "My documents" were a nightmare to find until I spotted a wee figurine of a desktop computer on the right side of the desktop taskbar, clicked on it and I found a complete list of almost everything. Then I just selected Control Panel, or My Documents, etc., from the long list presented and you can find to your great relief that all the docs are still there. Then, if you the click the "Create shortcut" tab offered to you then you may find that, yes, a shortcut will be placed on your desktop as requested but it also won't open to anywhere when you click it ,either right or left clicks. Also, if you do the same with the Control Panel heading selected from the long list, you will get the same result. So, clearly, I have to make enquiries locally and solve this poor situation unless I can get an answer from one of you lads. Another disturbing thing for me is to find that if I create shortcuts in certain places on the desktop, then they invariably move into a clump on the left side quickly afterwards and always if I close down the computer, even if I try all the "Arrange Icons" configurations revealed by the "view" route by right clicking on the desktop. Any ideas please ? Thirdly, the IE windows invariably are likely to open in a very minimised box mode but will rarely stay in the maximised mode after I change them and shut down the computer. Sometimes they do, but mostly not and I find the next time I browse, there they are again. Now I have another question...why won't the recycle bin show me the contents ( I know there should be some in there because I've just deleted them) when I select open from the bin options to see what is in there before actually deleting? The button "open" just will not work. And one very irritating issue here is that website windows will just disappear without any reason --then your only option is usually to find a way to sign-off or shut down the computer and restart the whole caboodle again. Daunting and very annoying when it happens. So I'm getting there but I am going to have to seek advice and struggle more before I will feel comfortable. Thankful that I only really need a browser, email and anti-virus and some storage space for valuable documents, photos, etc. Would I have switched from Windows 7, which was much simpler and easier to navigate and not as overblown as Windows 10, knowing what I do now? In the latter case ("10") every time you think you have got there you find you have to scan more lists of stuff and make more selections. They seem to be trying to give all things to all men right now in order to convince people to buy I suppose. So, for me, the answer is "maybe not at this stage". The techie who has been helping me says he is going to wait until they have worked out the bugs and so does my son who is a smart guy with computers and that sounds like good advice if you can live with your "out of date" computer. But, for sure, if you buy a new one then you are more or less going to have to accept "10", and get on with it because you need to go forward. The HP deal comes with a Mouse -which is a bit slow in starting to scroll and a Keyboard. I've ditched the keyboard already in favor of my last one, a Logitech L120, which has writing on it. The other one (HP) doesn't so, unless you have used a modern keyboard recently, then you have to gingerly find your way around it without any directions whatsoever. It offers three arrows pointing West but all that you want is one marked "Enter" like a standard keyboard to allow you to move down one line of type. And all I could find was double spacing instead of the standard single spacing for typing and none of these three arrows addresses this common-sense requirement. It is so difficult for me to fathom it out and even see (small letters--no writing, and with smaller keys jammed together) and I do think it is quite ridiculous altogether. It looks to me that H.P's keyboard is for a modernwhizkid, not a guy with vision impairment for sure. The K120 keyboard is very neat and has reasonable speces between letters so that I can get up a fairly good gallop with a little help from my friend Mr. Spellchecker. Any uplifting comments will be gratefully received in Noddyland as soon as possible!

  22. That guy needed RINSO, not Persil. Ha! Ha!
  23. Top Six, Sorry I don't remember that one it was a long time ago . That hit on Kariya would have been viewed in a very poor light nowadays since it does appear very deliberate. The guy who did it would have been suspended nowadays , possibly sine die, and fined very heavily. We had a tough guy on the Canucks about 4 years ago who deliberately did the same thing to another team's player who ended up in hospital and was unable to play for a very long time thereafter. The offender got roasted --there was actually a multi-million dollar court case when the injured player was well enough to sue him and it cost the toughie dearly. His reputation went right in the tank and he ended up playing for a less fashionable team etc. The injured player went down like a stone after his elbow hit him on the head. I must admit Hansen's injury was nobody's fault but I was very surprised when re re-appeared from the tunnel to finish the overtime because I felt for sure he had sustained a concussion.
