  1. I agree about McNaughton, he is still a class act but we took a punt on him on a significant salary with his injury prone record and that punt unfortunately didn't pay off but hopefully he can reward us now by helping dig us out of the hole we're in. Whilst not in the Rooney or Ronaldo financial league, McNaughton has had a highly lucrative career and has, most certainly, earned a good deal more in the course of that career than any other player in the squad in addition to which he has recently benefited from a testimonial match at Cardiff. It would be nice to think that he would repay the faith we showed in him by signing on next season, whether in the Premiership or Championship, for a more modest rate of remuneration. As far as tomorrow's match is concerned, in the interests of sporting integrity, St Johnstone should play the second half with nine men !
  2. I don't think that anyone has given up on us staying up but many of us are realistic about that prospect taking into account recent results and performances. Things might have been different had the manager displayed such realism several weeks ago rather than continuing to talk about top six.
  3. Our demise is nothing to do with any central belt conspiracy but everything to do with naive and inexperienced management of players who are better than our current position would suggest.
  4. Agree very much with RIG. Given our recent 'form' it was unlikely that we were ever going to take anything from Pittodrie against an Aberdeen team in a rich vein of form and scoring for fun. In the end,as RIG says, we could have nicked a draw and at least our goal difference, which could yet be crucial, did not take a pounding. Thinking about it, I actually think that last night's result in Dingwall was favourable to us. If any team are in worse form than us it's Dundee who are on a terrible run and are leaking far more goals than us. Their free fall reminds me of the Hibs team of a few seasons ago under Terry Butcher. That said, if we are going to put pressure on Dundee and the others in our region of the table, we are going to have to start winning. Merely not losing is no longer enough draws, even seven of them, will not be enough to save us. Three wins and four defeats would give us more points. All seven of our remaining games are against sides we are more than capable of beating and we have in Billy a proven goal scorer but even he can't score without adaqute service and to provide that service we need to be playing with more width and greater pace. We have the players capable of doing so for goodness sake Richie stop messing about and give them licence to do what we know we can. We can still get out of this mess but not by continuing to deploy the 'tacticts' that have produced a paltry four wins all season.
  5. I understand the frustration but still find that comment a bit harsh. Rather than the worst manager, Richie is the most inexperienced and that lack of experience is continuing to show. If we are going to stick by him next season, whether that be in the Premiership or the Championship, we need to recognise that inexperience by backing him up and mentoring him with an astute and experienced assistant. It's increasingly clear that the present assistant is a very long way short of what's required.
  6. I agree that what the Perth Saints have achieved is remarkable but., as far as miraculous is concerned, Perth and Inverness are not dissimilar in size but St Johnstone have been members of the Scottish Football League for over a century and took over a century to win their first major national trophy. After a hundred years of exclusion on increasingly spurious geographical grounds, we have achieved our league standing from a standing start just over twenty years ago and secured our cup in less than a fifth of the time it took them. If either team has created a footballing miracle it's us. I just hope this season isn't when that magic dust runs out.
  7. Even greater incentive for us to win tomorrow after this evening's rout by Aberdeen. A win might not only take us out of the bottom two but would leave us only three points behind Dundee with their goal difference advantage almost eliminated.
  8. Relegation pressure has a strange and disturbing effect. Rooting for the Dons tonight despite them continuing to poach our best players. Even stranger and yet more disturbing, will be rooting for The Rangers tomorrow.
  9. At least he will have a familiar face in the form of Miles Storey to chat to whilst sitting on the bench.
  10. A positive could be our own home grown Liam Polworth stepping up to the plate next season, constantly played in his natural position and. at last, becoming the nailed on first XI pick he deserves to be.
  11. Greg Tansey on form is, without doubt, one of our most talented and influential players. There have been signs lately that, after being poor by his standards for most of the season, he is returning to form. In our current predicament, we can't afford not to play him and that includes the game at Pittodrie. His performances against Aberdeen have been generally excellent over the years which is the principal reason he will be pulling on their shirt next season.
  12. So very true....
  13. Let's not squabble about who said what about London trains, crutches or anything else. The important and hugely unfortunate thing is that one of our best and most influential players as well as a significant contributor of goals is going to miss a number of matches at a time of great peril for the club. If ever there was a time to pull together it's now and let's hope that Carl recovers in time to contribute to the vital post split fixtures.
  14. It would be enough to keep us in the league though.
  15. It has got beyond we can't afford to go backwards results wise to the point where we can't afford not to go forwards and quickly.
  16. There is no call for personal abuse and any repeat by anyone will result in being barred from posting on this thread.
  17. I would prefer to secure the play off position (at the very least) before we start thinking about who we might face. That said, I hope we are preparing already for that contingency by someone from the coaching team taking in a few relevant Championship matches.
  18. Absolutely. An interesting and very valid post spoiled by those last, unfair, unnecessary and divisive comments at the end. Right now we need everyone from the young and enthusiastically vocal to the more 'mature' just as enthusiastic but perhaps less boisterous on board. If ever there was a time for TogetherNess it's now.
  19. Agreed, effort and endeavour was there in abundance and, if we are going to have a chance of staying up, that has to remain at the same level right to the end of the season.
  20. With that clarification, perhaps we can now get this thread back on topic.
  21. Sadly, that last sentence is so very true. Probably for the first time ever they have crawled out from beneath our shadows and there is a distinct possibility that next season, for the first time ever we could be in a lower division than them. There is still time to put that right but that time is rapidly running out and we need to start being a lot more astute and a great deal more flexible. Richie can still salvage our season and, with it, his own fledgling managerial career and I dearly want him to do both but he needs to demonstrate that he can learn from his mistakes of the past and do it now.
  22. There are not many scenarios that would leave me so enthusiastic about a 4-0 win for the club that continues to embarrass Scottish football more than any other but yesterday was one of them and I sincerely hope they win their next match just as convincingly just as I hope the other Ugly Sister hammers Dundee this afternoon. Strange times but we need assistance at the moment from whatever source.
  23. I don't think that anyone is suggesting that today was anything like our worst display of the season or that we could have or even should have won. The frustration lies in the fact that many believe that, with less predictable and restrictive tactics and formation, could have and should have would have been should have and did.
  24. I take the view that those who actually paid hard earned cash to watch are entitled to vent there entirely justified frustration. Remember these frustrations are borne not merely out of one derby match were a winning position was lost but out watching too many all too familiar performances all league season.
  25. I have backed and defended Richie from the outset but there is no doubt that the point we got today was despite him rather than because of him. The starting XI and the formation were entirely wrong for the occasion and the point we got was due to the determination and spirit of the players rather than management or tactical nouns which were sadly lacking. This formation has been tried before and has failed before. What on earth made the manager think that the result would be any different this time. There is a reason we only have four victories this season. County are one of the very few teams in the division on a poorer run of form and with less confidence than ourselves and had we adopted a more expansive and adaptable style of play with just a bit of width they were there for the taking. Even with the tactics we deployed we got ourselves into a winning position yet the manager failed to recognise that there was a need to adapt and refresh to maintain that. What on earth was the point of a substitution in the 90th after our advantage was ceded. Today wasn't a disaster largely because other results went our way and we still have a chance of survival but not if the manager continues to be so inflexible and unimaginative. We are unlikely to take anything from Pittodrie so it's vital that we win our next game against Killie. We have the players and the spirit to do it. The big question is whether these resources will at last be deployed with a bit more guile and tactical nous.
