  1. And that IMO was the most disappointing thing about today. Well before half time it was so obvious it wasn't working. Agree totally with Renegade above too! Best bit of the day was getting one of Regueros great smiles at half time!
  2. All very hypothetical renegade, and there is now way if knowing that Hartley would do any better. No, but he would have been the more inspiring and exciting appointment. I'll tell you what he almost certainly said. Buzzwords aplenty such as "business as usual', passion, honesty, boilersuits, playing good football and learning from what he's done in the past. Hughes has lived off his Falkirk legacy and this constant insistence that he plays "good football". First of all, that's a myth. All of Hughes's teams have attempted to pass teams to death with very little penetration up-front. It was like that at Livingston and at Falkirk, as well as Hibs, before they got in to hoofing it. The Falkirk legacy is also an interesting thing. They may have won Division One twice, but did so with a fairly large budget. As well as this, it's widely regarded that he would've been sacked had they not reached the Scottish Cup Final and a good chunk of the fans there do not remember him fondly at all. The question now is, how long does he get? What happens if lose next Sunday? We really should be beating that Hearts team no matter how up for it they are. What about the league? Surely if we don't finish in the top six, questions will need to be asked of Hughes and those who chose him.

In the 10 years we took to reach the SPL we had 11 wins against teams from a higher division. Also after we were relegated we took an SPL scalp in beating Motherwell 2-0 in a blizzard.
  4. Tough choices. Had the players who played so well against Aberdeen also played well against Kilmarnock, then the team would probably have picked itself - but they didn't. That's maybe a blessing in disguise because I think that would not be our best team for this game. In making his selection there are a few factors Yogi needs to consider:- Cup success is all Hearts have to play for this season - they will be 100% up for this. They will be in our faces trying to stop us playing pretty football. The game will go to extra time if all square after 90 minutes. We have a number of players returning from injury who may struggle over 90 minutes and would certainly struggle over 120. We need to prepare for a hard combative match and whilst we should look to win in normal time we need to prepare for 120. I would play Tremarco at left back and keep Shinnie in midfield. The solidity of Vincent and Draper in midfiled will allow Raven and Shinnie to drive forward allowing Doran and Watkins more options. Vincent perhaps is the most likely not to last the pace but draper can drop back and Tansey come into the attacking midfield role. Either Greenhalgh or Williams could come on for Watkins and would provide effective fresh legs if needed. I think this would be a hard team for Hearts to break down but one that will be dangerous on the break. We need to get at them early and get our noses in front. I think Tansey will prove a great signing and whilst I would personally like to see him start, I can't see that happening if he didn't get on at all yesterday. 5. In an odd way I am happy with how results went yesterday. Us losing and Hearts winning will hopefully give our team the boot up the as and show it isn't cut and dried we will make the final. Even with Mothersmell and the sheep drawing, 2nd place is a distant pipe dream so let's concentrate on top 6 and 2 cup finals.
  6. Ive heard of Movember, Beards for Bairns and I know some women who are collecting for Fanuary but not sure what that entails.
  7. I do remember the 'is Butcher the man for the job' thread, with someone saying along the lines of 'what if we're marooned at the bottom - best to sack him now'. This is the same with Hughes. I suspect he won't do well but he has to be given the chance to prove us wrong, in the same way Tel did with some. Out of the top six has to mean sacking. But that hasn't happened yet and may not. Give him a chance to fail or succeed. Top six is an absolute must though. We're going completely the wrong direction if we drop out. But let that happen before we judge a failure.
  8. The thing is, if you go for someone who' 'like Terry Butcher', you're just going to get an inferior version. Hughes might have some positive aspects, but he isn't Terry Butcher. Paul Hartley IMO was exactly what this club needed; fresh blood, new ideas and a new approach. Had he brought his assistant Paddy Connolly with him (a former Fulham scout), he could've easily replaced Marsella. Going for someone who's like Butcher, but not as good, will not make the club go forward, if anything we'll be lucky to stay where we are. Don't know about Sheerin, but Murray probably will be. All very hypothetical renegade, and there is now way if knowing that Hartley would do any better. The fact is that you were not present at the interviews, nor took part in nor asked what you thought about the candidates. Having spoken to someone who took part in the interviews, he totally convinced me that our new manager was by far the best for this club as it is. Give him and Russell time to sort out our squad and tactics.

In season 2003/2004 lowly third divison / League 2 side Queens Park beat us 1-2 in Inverness to knock us out of the League Cup, Bobby Mann even missed a penalty in the last minute. They finished fourth bottom of the 3rd Division that season and we finished as 1st division champions, pipping Clyde to promotion to the promised land. And..............it's only a couple of years since Ayr United dumped us out of the same competition. The first time we played them since thrashing them 0-7 was a 1-0 defeat at Somerset park in August 2011 Ayr finished second bottom of Division 1 that season and we finished 10th in the SPL.
  11. So much for being away from his son, taking himself out of the running and all that other nonsense. Cameron wanted to take a 'different route' - the cheaper, mercenary route. We chose a manager with a record no better than Jim Duffy's, Ivan Golac's or Ian MacCall's, when we could have had one of Scotland's best up and coming managers. Disgrace.
  12. One thing I noted in Hughes' first interview after becoming manager, I recollect him saying words to the effect of "Give the ball to Billy and he'll score". Under Butcher, Mckay was one of an often expansive number of options, but we seem to be trying to get the ball to him by any means necessary, even if that means whacking it at him up against two towering centre-backs. This seems to be a tactic Hughes has implemented from the start, but while I can understand the logic in it, I'm not sure it's really worked out the best for either Mckay or the team as a whole.

  14. Mckay...small "k"
  15. Warren was alright, Brill had little to do and Mckay had no service. The rest though were very poor. Doran, Williams, Shinnie and Ross weren't at their best, while Polworth was rubbish and put in a performance almost as bad as the one in the 4-0 defeat at Perth. It was really a case of one team being fairly poor, and another being even worse - we were the team who was even worse. The players don't look as up for it, certainly nowhere near as much as they did last week and we lacked creativity and fluidity throughout. We seemed too keen to sit back as well, hardly ever looking to intercept the ball when it's live, nor pressing the man in possession. Things need changing if we want to win next week and getting a result, is nowhere near as likely as some people would like to believe.
  16. You were clearly not at the game. Polworth keeping his place is madness!
  17. I agree with Yogi's meritocratic philosophy. If he had put all the regular first teamers straight back in, and we'd gone on to lose, everyone would be complaining - why change a winning team that performed so brilliantly the week before? The reserve players who came in and did such a good job last week earned their starting places today. What's the point in giving young players a chance if they subsequently lose their place in the team no matter how well they play? I would have named the same starting 11 as last week. Warren's form has dipped as the season has gone on. Devine played very well last week and our back 4 was rock solid.
