Wynthank15.. In answer to your queries : 1. I'm 77, but can still remember incidents in games going back to my relative childhood--at least in my early teens. I'm truthfully undecided as to whether the League cup is worth holding on to. The Scottish cup seems to be a higher ranking tournament in Scotland these days than the league cup which year by year appears to be losing it's glamour. But the club probably does need it to enhance their annual income, especially if they can reach the Final. There does seem to be quite a bit of wear and tear on the players in the Premier Division and no doubt the players would rather not play in two major tournaments in addition to the tousy League each season. However, they want their money and it is a trade in exchange for wages so they can expect to play frequently and to avoid injury they need to work hard on the training ground. Businessmen who are self employed need to work or not eat and frequently they suffer many different types of injuries plying their trade--anything from cuts and bruises, falls off roofs, tripping on concealed edges of concrete paths, broken ribs falling off ladders and many others....... s-o-o-o.. don't feel too sorry for these players because they have the advantage of having free access to first class physiotherapy and other treatments not available necessarily to trades unless the latter can afford to take time off work and pay for private treatments out of their own pockets. Also, most p[ayers are in prime condition and young which does help enormously in the recovery process. Self-employed wallahs often have to work despite painful ,debilitating injuries which remain for a long time due to their inability to rest the limb(s) adequately. Cheers

Longman--did you take Latin at school as well? I was in Mrs.MacDonald's class at the Academy and that family was really friendly with my mother and father so I had to pay attention. She had an imposing personality and you knew when you went into her class that you were there to learn. At least I learned "Gaudeamus Igitur, juvenes dum sumus" (pardon the spelling 'cos that was a long time ago)...... Her lovely husband, Mr. Donnie Macdonald, was also a gem of a person. Is there anyone on here remembers these two fine people. They lived out the Dores Road as I recall. -
Aye! And maybe aye, och aye--or a reduced Ban-nerman thingie too, eh? Imagine, Charlie, if you found out one bright and breezy day that you were remotely related to yours truly? What would you do? Be careful now.....

Exactly what is meant by "a contract extension" though? He's on a two year contract isn't he and as I recall he's only completed one year? Or does the word "contract" or "agreement" or even "gentleman's agreement" now mean nothing these days. If so, why bother to sign any paper? Right? All you have to do then is a pas-de-bas and say .."After you Claude." If I am correct then the Manager has an obligation to honour his side of the agreement just as ICT has to honour their side. I feel certain that both parties would do that due to the character on both sides so why rush around? "One swallow does not make a summer" springs to mind. The expectation should be no release during the formal contract period unless at the discretion of the club and accompanied by a large monetary compensation for the club if that is agreed to. Or, as a prominent lawyer would say..." A contract is a contract is a contract."

Find a shop which does embroidery instead of printing. Try a sports or jeans outfitter. My wife, a highly skilled professional seamstress has recently been hired by a company here named Mark's Work Wearhouse -- maybe Scotty has one in Toronto as well but I am not sure whether the owner has expanded that far. She does attachments for sports kits and strips. The embroidery machines do all the stitching and it's fascinating to watch. At home, with her own sewing machine, she is getting a reputation for attaching patches on jackets for burly bikers.

Surely there is money in it for the club though .....?

That's about $46 Canadian to buy that amount of pounds at current rates of exchange. The Canadian dollar has been falling in value significantly in view of the backlash against oil from which much of the country's riches have flowed. That compares, I think, to a sum in the $20's to go and see a Whitecaps game. But since I don't go into the city any more I could be wrong. Scotty will tell us what he pays to go and support Toronto ....? Desperate attempts by the oil moguls and our current Government to open up pipelines across the West to the sea and one going south deep into America is encountering stiff opposition from environmental groups and native groups with the latter claiming that the land will be defiled by anticipated spillages. We had one in Vancouver harbour (busiest port in Canada) a few months ago and the spill emergency responders, who were just not ready, never showed up for hours and hours. Fortunately the type of oil that spilled was not very thick and it was eventually contained and sucked up out of the water. But,. it just goes to show........ The main threat when the oil is being shipped out of North West British Columbia is not the land-spills but the defiling of the pristine waters and coasts of the of the smaller Northern ports. Over twenty years ago, when the Torrey Canyon oil transport ship experienced a major spill in the estuary, the devastation to coastal beaches, shores and wildlife was catastrophic and even today they are still finding black tar in spots along the coastal regions. The clean-up ultimately has cost the owners of the ship billions of dollars so--who is paying for that ? The consumer of the by-products of oil of course.

Well, there is little fear of anyone contradicting your thoughts, Bughtmaster. But what's all this talk about a new Manager anyway.? Why would John H .leave at this juncture? Another season like the last one and he would be in a position to have a good increase in remuneration and /or cement his relationship at the club for a more permanent future perhaps. Correct? Richie is undoubtedly an excellent player with drive, flair and a high work rate. As such, he demonstrates unimpeachable professionalism and is an outstanding example of dedication and skill to the younger up-and-coming younger professionals at the club. But what actual, consistent managerial experience does he have that could enable him to take over what is no a winning , forward-looking club and continue the outstanding work of J Hughes and the current Board ? I can only leave that to those who know the answer to that question to explain further? Working with, and under the guidance of, someone like John Hughes would be an excellent starting point but acting alone in the face of the trials and tribulations of the on-the-job challenges is another thing. The way the new manager reacts and handles these things is the forerunner and determinant of his or her future progress and success. Which means, in turn, that the Board has to first decide whether or not to go for merely enthusiasm and hope or past managerial experience which has shown success to date. In my view, based on my past life's work ventures there is no substitute for experience. An appointment as assistant to Mr John Hughes as a first step would be a realistic and prudent move if his playing days are well nigh over (by virtue of injury, etc.). In fact I really can't see any other course for Richie in terms of management as being available to Richie at this point. It would be wonderful if he could stay at the club, though, IMHO. Both for him and the club.

Sorry but I missed it--what was the referee's name?

Noticed there was a fair crowd over 6,000 at the Stadium today. Long may it continue. The Dons were supposed to have been bringing 1500 so that puts a damper on the total figure of ICT supporters attending wouldn't it? Fantastic progress now under way aided and abetted I hope by another big crowd soon.

Wow! This reporting is somewhat different to the one on the SPL site. The final words (condescending?) were "....." an entertaining game." Meaning what exactly.......?

Did not read that Kenny Shiels is in the frame again. He left his last club with acrimony tainting the air. Yet he seemed to be a hard- nosed, successful Manager. He could be hired--these are desperate times at D.U. Comments please?

C M in B --- My new house, supposedly finished over two years ago, took a year to fix the 80 defects I found after the alleged completion. Most of the builders here in the West are of East Indian origin. The price will not go up- but you must check everything with a fine-tooth comb. Barely a single door in the house was hung right and locks were put in backwards or falling out; toilet roll holders falling off and many more faults. One lock was cemented in a huge hole in the garage side-door with putty and the repair was laughable and I had to insist on a new door. The Fan in the canopy above one of the kitchen stoves was the wrong size so that the draft blew downward instead of up. This builder alleged he could not find a replacement fan in the entire city but I found it for him in one day--he had put a fan with a 6 inch outlet pipe into a 5 inch vent pipe when the building code stated the latter should be 6 inches. I also warned him that the thin plastic toilet seat was not fitting properly on the outer toilet rims in the master bedroom bathroom and it (and another one) would soon break if not replaced. He did nothing and sure enough one broke whilst I was reading the local paper and I got stuck in the seat like a clam in his shell. He claimed his supplier did not have the heavy one I demanded and so I went out right away and found two in our township and sent the bill to him. I am still waiting for his refund of the cost of the Polysporin anti-septic ointment for the broken plastic that nipped my erse..... O.K. - I am just waiting for IHE to find something germane to the issue... Chentlemen of the Chury, this is not called the Wild West for nuffink. No sirree!

Have to hand it to you , Chas for a good try. But the name mentioned by you above was Donald Bane also, not just MacBan or just Ban. So-- does that not make a difference? Probably not so I have to commend you for your reference. As for Mr Rattle-Assegai? Well, he did tend to take liberties in his prose so I wouldn't put too much store by what he was referring to--probably extremely fictionalised by him don't you think. However it is a fact that MacBeth was a member of the MacBean clan and that's where he hot-footed to after he chopped down the other guy on the battlefield. Let's face it, Charrlie, we are just playing with names here because a rose with any other name smells the same...Ha?
