There seems to be an accepted wisdom which ICT have bought into along with everyone else that a club needs a first team squad of 22-24 players to compete in the SPL.
I wonder if that is in fact the case ? I know that there has to adaquate cover for injury, suspension and loss of form but surely a competent squad of 2 goalkeepers, 6 defenders, 6 midfielders and 4or 5 forwards would be enough to a side through most seasons.
The advantage would be that there would be a tighter, happier squad with ferwer potentially discontented first team aspirants cooling their heels in the reserves and if the odd youngster had to be blooded from time to time in an emergency would that necessarily be a bad thing ?
The other major advantage of operating with a squad 20% smaller would be that the remaining players could be paid 20% more without increasing the budget thereby increasng the quality of player who we could attract in the future.
