Lee Barnard - wanted by Inverness Caledonian Thistle

SOUTHEND United have turned down an offer from Inverness Caledonian Thistle for their out of favour striker Lee Barnard.

The 30-year-old failed to make the squad for Saturday’s clash with York City.

But Blues boss Phil Brown revealed Barnard is keen to fight for his future atRoots Hall.

“I spoke to Lee and he’s told me he wants to stay here and fight for his place which I admire,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“He’s seen me bring in two new strikers but is keen to try and get back in to the team.

“Of course that could change and someone else could come in and whet his whistle which I don’t think Inverness did so we decided to turn down their bid.”

Barnard spent time on loan with Stevenage earlier on in the season and has not appeared for Blues since October.

Hmmmm looking at his stats he has done ok but at 30 are we willing to sign a player already in the downward of his career

Sounds like we wanted this guy on loan. It wouldn't surprise me if Southend were happy to send Bernard up here but it sounds like he didn't want to come here.

In all honesty there are better options out there than this guy.

Let's hope he wasn't the contingency plan!

Decent enough pedigree but has had troubles off the park. I'm hoping we at least approach Scott McDonald

Why?

Certainly wouldn't grudge signing him, he's got loads of experience and has played at a much higher level than the SPL. Would surely score plenty of goals for us.

Well, Lightwelter he may think he is playing a non-superior league but if his head is big then he will need big wages to flatter him. Could be the wrong player if you are right. ?

You may well be correct but we might have to take that risk, although it seems unlikely now. Very disappointing if we don't get anyone in but there's no point signing players to make up the numbers.

And there is nothing wrong with that unless we start picking up injuries or a few a players start having bad games.
