  1. Sudden death, like , eh, Renegade? Has its merits I must admit but it will probably never happen due to the influence of the Old Firm. What are the origins of the name Gala Fairydean? Nothing to do with defrocked priests has it by any chance.?
  2. The factor probably is a sense of isolation and independence borne out of the knowledge that being quite far North in the U.K. they will never be taken that seriously or even helped to any great extent by their southern neighbors. Relative remoteness develops sturdy and self-reliant independence like nothing else. e.g. Eskimo or, as they say in Northern Canada, the INUIT nation. Imagine Kirkwall having an SPL team and trying to make ends meet? I think that probably for any foreseeable future the football buck will now stop at Dingwall as far as any expansion is concerned. Which means that us northerners will always be reluctant to identify too closely with any one entity or team, even the home team. "Wha's like us? " has never resonated so well as in Inverness , the capital of the Highlands! Also, most football teams in the U.K.are related to, or based in, larger cities with a more concentrated population so don't need such a wide catchment area as Caley Thistle perhaps. Any thoughts on this ?
  3. Fraz. Sorry, I disagree . Scottish Football needs a resurgence of interest and perhaps lower prices not a re-appearance of "The Rangers" who attracted incorrect decisions in their favour, too much money out of the pot and a host of other negative things. If they can crawl back into the top flight so be it but help them.? Heh, we have never had such an opportunity to get out from under the stupefying shadow of the big as we do at this juncture of the emergence and flowering of the new Scottish Football model "One for all and all for one. Without them we have more space to expand and grow stronger IMHO. The next big team will be the Pride of the Highlands ...ICT.
  4. I think it's slated for replacement next year. Does anyone remember the Taylors who lived in the large house on the corner of Fairfield Road and Dochfour Drive? He operated his Slater business from the yard at the back of the house. Always liked Mr Taylor 'cos he would arrive unexpectedly at my house and insisted that I came with him for a run in his new car(s) --Jowett Javelin as I recall, I left the house with a big grin on my face I can tell you. Adventure always made me grin....DOH!
  5. Desperation is a harsh taskmaster Draganict.
  6. Hoch! Hoch! Hoch!
  7. Alex "Daan Saff"? Do I hear a yankee drawl in there?
  8. A Troll --Old Norse /Swedish.. Oxford Englandterre Dictionary states : From Scandinavian Folklore: Fabulous being, especially a giant or dwarf dwelling in a cave, OR To sing out carefree jovial manner . OR To Fish by drawing bait along in the water.. That's not so bad then, so we can now all relax.
  9. The pavement in North America means the roadway whereas the sidewalk means exactly that , the pavement (if you get my drift). There are no streetcars there any more unless San Francisco still runs a few for the tourists but the word sounds much more exciting than trams doesn't it? I mean. Hollywood would never name a film "A tram named Desire" would they? Suspenders are almost out with hankies on heads on the Brighton beach but may be still worn in the Deep South where the residents' slow drawl matches the speed of their brains whilst they dive into muddy rivers to extract mighty mud -dwelling fish that only a navvy could lift on a good day after he has had a good sleep. or... eat countless buckets of Kentucky Fried chicken washed down with Budweiser in gallons. Oh, and men no longer wear hats in public, maybe the beautiful Stetson when on a hoss or on their ranch though and that's it. As for stadiums, the Americans never build small and some of them are beautiful and meant to hold up to a hundred thousand fans .When they do something (in Canada also) they do it in style and Yanks are outward -looking and not afraid to put their money where their mouth is and for this I have to admire them-- they sure have panache and drive, and money of course. Mind you, jazz emanated from that area so there is a lot of talent there, especially in N'Orleans. The American civil war which started at Fort Sumpter , just off the Southern coast of S. Carolina, was also a product of the intense inward -looking thinking of the Southerners, and ultimately took 600,000 lives which, at that time, was the most deaths ever suffered in any war ever fought up to that time. Needless to say, the carnage and misery wrought was "something else" and the South never recovered from it ,so unique prejudice still remains in much of that area even to this day. Believe it or not, there is a lot to be said for spelling words to reflect the way they are spoken but if you are a newbie from Great Britain you will have a hard time figuring it all out , especially when you have to decide which language to use when you write a book like www.destiniesinmotion.com because, with America being probably the largest market in the world one has to choose horses for courses and that is why the Americanised spelling is generally adopted for communication.
  10. And how!.
  11. Donview-- dedication spelled "incredible".
  12. In my young days in Inverness a slater was a man who ran a business putting new roofs on homes. I suppose slates are rarely if ever used these days to roof a house.
  13. DK60==great post; brought a lot of memories back. Sigh, yes, the days before any phones, let alone cell phones. Few cars also. Cheap gasoline. On the bike and away at the toot that was our life. Balmy days of Summer ..can't remember many rainy days, always out at night playing on the street etc. We shouldn't forget these early days of our lives because we were really innocent in my young day and our wants were few and far between. What we needed we made or found something else to do.
  14. BBC Blinking Biased Chums.
  15. Rytenuff That is possible. And maybe they smuggled them into Canada in their suitcase inside a hot water bottle. In them thar days customs procedures were much more relaxed and OOLICHANS were probably not seen as a major risk to the Empire. Smile
  16. In Western Canada an Eulachan is a wee fish--sometimes spelt Oolichans. Does that qualify? ..eh?
  17. Oh My! I see Dougal - bashing is still a popular sport on here. Nasty like. Not civil. NOT COOL. If the poor lad doesn't have a thick skin by now then he soon will have. Gotta hand it to him though--he's a stickler and NOT a quitter. Funny how it's cool to target someone who gets kicked around a lot but rarely retaliates. C'mon, let's all grow up and allow him to speak his mind. As IHE says, we should listen to him and consider his words . And no, he is NOT a troll, anymore than the persons who accuse him of being one, are. That's abusive! If you want to target someone have a go at Scarlet because even I sometimes think he is a moron. Except when he is asleep when he looks angelic and deep down inside I really loooooove my little Scar-baby. O.K back to the pipe and slippers. Daddy Pimpernel. P.S. ICT spent a huge amount of money on injuries last season and have had to cut the budget right back this year. Advertising costs a lot of money to be effective-i.e. repeated several times a year, to be truly effective. We have a full roster with a large wage bill and no appreciable increase in the support it seems. So, where is all the advertising expenses going to come from I wonder?
  18. I don't think even D Moyes, the new Manager of Manchester United , would be able to pull this chestnut out of the fire now. Sometimes lessons have to be learned the hard way and it's Rangers turn now and no mistake. It simply doesn't look as if it is sinking in yet that if there is much more of the baloney that is currently surrounding Ibrox these days and even the faithful will turn against them. All propriety and dignity seems to have exited the main gate along with integrity. And contempt must surely soon follow the sadness that dwelleth therein. Laurence, sorry, but if you think this charade of a team now will be welcome in the new SPL I am not at all sure of that my friend.
  19. They should perhaps get used to it because the ownership/managership issues are settled there will be a lot more from the windbags.
  20. Govan Jaggie's down to earth common sense enters with a breath of fresh air.
  21. If he went to Rangers he would be stepping into a very muddy puddle. And it might finish his career on a very sour note. The place is a hotbed of intrigue and infighting. Shambolic isn't the word for it, it seems. Staying at Caley Thistle is offering him great prospects for more success, stability and a growing reputation for success. At Rangers the whole thing could go into reverse....?
  22. If all the fans were like you Bughtmaster..eternally optimistic. A fresh of breath air, so you are.
  23. I could only find one real reference to this match and that was an official report online. All the other reports were about either Celtic or Aberdeen. Not to mention the total lack of access to any live reporting for overseas listeners being no surprise. Or about the Rangers, who lost to lowly Forfar Athletic. What on earth has gone wrong at Ibrox---far too much squabbling about who should manage or direct this shadow of the former glorious team of the past, methinks? Imagine...out of the league cup already?? About the Dons : sorry, but the news is that Willie Miller has signed with the Whitecaps until the end of the season. At over one million dollars that is some contract he has netted. Good luck to him; he has come alive this season and has given this team a real jolt of electricity with his acumen and scoring ability. Good captain too. Referring to C B's good interview with Danny Lennon, I assume that the latter was referring to the fact that the defender could not get out of the way of the free kick that led to the penalty. I'm on record here in the past as decrying all penalty kicks because I think they almost always give an unfair advantage to the team who gets it. What is wrong with a free kick instead? Goalmouth scrambles are far superior to viewers than a completely un-opposed free kick that inmost cases is a cert. It's unfair and should be du=one away with completely. Great win today though. Danny Lennon did sound a tad disappointed and He said that he had weighed up the Caley team and tactics beforehand and had decided how to match them but, unfortunately for his ambitions, , maybe he did not have the firepower to come up to the speed he wanted. Looking forward to viewing the highlights... As for Vincent he seems to have some "bottle"about him and a determination to be successful, so all power to him. Could turn out to be a skillful and very successful player for us.
  24. Fascinating: Alternative Maryhill Did you know one John Robertson who lived on Broadstone Avenue, father was a vet or something. palled around with him at the Academy. Caley Canary..AHA, so you were a POM were you in the RAF?--went to Uxbridge then for testing your mettle as Potential Offgicer Material did you. Me too , I failed ( I think) . You? Passed and had a brilliant career eh?
