  1. I like both. Not having to take books means there is more room in the suitcase for the duty free.
  2. Good post, Buckett. Think I'll stop buying their yoghurt
  3. You should get out more - now you know it's safe
  4. Majestic do a lot of offers where you get 20% of if you buy 2 bottles of the same or even from the same country. The new law says you can't make such offers in Scotland. Majestic's way around that is simply to say that the discounted price applies to single bottles in Scotland and their price lists now have an English price and a Scottish price with the Scottish price being 20% less. Hence a law which was intended to increase the cost of alcohol has resulted in a decrease. I like Majestic!
  5. Watched a bit but decided I wanted to do something more exciting - so I cleaned the fridge instead.
  6. I've only been able to get to a couple of matches this season so really cannot comment on the way players are playing. However, the general theme seems to be that we have a team capable of playing some good stuff, are creating a lot of chances but we are being let down by some basic errors at the back and a lack of a natural scorer at the front. When Golobart was signed I think I read that he was a defender who can play as a striker so I wonder if it would be worth trying him at the other end. If he could be responsible for as many going into the net at the right end as he appears to be at the wrong end, we could start moving in the right direction. People seem to be praising Tade's work rate so it would be hard to drop him. Foran appears to be playing further forward but has missed a number of good chances. An alternative would be for him to be playing deeper with Sutherland in a more central striker role playing off Tade. Sutherland has often impressed me and seems to have an eye for goal. It seems a waste to play him wide as often seems to be the case.
  7. Then resign from your union, why should you pick and chose benifits from the union but decide to scab any industrial action, which you are correct is a last resort, aimed at protecting the rights of you and your fellow workers? If you are so anti-strike then get on your soapbox and make your point, perhaps you can dissaude the membership from taking action, if not either resign your membership or support your union in the same way they would support you. A members ballot is just that, a ballot, a method of deciding on action taken by the union by asking it's membership what action they would like to take. You have the right to vote no to any action, just as the Union leadership who were elected by yourself and the rest of your collegues have the right to ask for the opinion of their membership. It's called democracy, it's the greatest thing to happen to the civilised world. Maybe sewerage systems and clean water are the greatest things to happen to the civilised world but democracy is certainly right up there. So what I object to is the little Hitlers in the Union leadership who think they can overide the democratic vote of the nation as a whole on the mandate of the small number of members who vote in a union ballot. That is not democracy, it is a betrayal of democracy. And actually I have resigned from my union - I used to be a member of Unite but have recently joined a more professionally focussed union where the efforts are focussed on the interests of its members in relation to their jobs and not in undermining the process of parliamentary democracy.
  8. I'm in a union but will not be striking. The "right" to strike is something that should be used as a last resort and is appropriate where there are more specific issues directly related to a persons employment and where management are being unreasonable. In my view it is an abuse to use the right to strike just because you don't like the way the Government is handling the national economy. Strike action will do nothing to help the economy and will only cause loads of irritation to others and impact on the most vulnerable in our society. It is ironic that these calls for strike action should be made on the same day a serious increase in the unemployment figures was announced. Those calling for strike action should count themselves lucky they have got a job and if they don't want to do it then how about giving it up and letting those without one do it instead. And by just what "right" do the unions think they can have a ballot of their members and then impose misery on everybody else? They may not like the result of the last election but they should respect the outcome because all the nation had the opportunity to vote in that. Of course, they have every right to show their dissatisfaction with the actions of this Government but the way to do that is to protest, and argue the case. If that doesn't prompt the Government to change policy then argue the case for an alternative approach at the next election.
  9. I agree with Dougal that the stadium design is not conducive to a good atmosphere, but regardless of the pros and cons of a move to a proper stadium it simply ain't going to happen any time soon. I also respect the right of the blanket and Werther's brigade to remain silent; although it would be nice for them to at least clap when we score a goal. What I object to is those who appear to object to those who do try to get behind the team and offer some noisy support. As I said on another thread, we need to find ways of getting more youngsters into the ground. Get enough in to get a good amount of noise going and it will be self perpetuating. But above all, reintroduce standing areas. This is the single most important factor in the decline of crowds and the disappearance of a decent atmosphere.
  10. We need a few more injuries to make the team selection easier.
  11. I doubt that there is now much scope to reduce expenditure. Most of the potential to reduce expenditure will be in players' wages and if wages are not at a pragmatic level players good enough to keep us in the SPL will not sign. We need to increase income. Of course, one off investment would be good but what is needed is a steady increase in revenue and a few good ideas have already been suggested. For me one of the key things must be to try to get more folk into the ground and I wonder if the club would benefit from reducing entrance fees, programme costs etc. I am lucky enough to be able to afford these prices without worrying about it but it doesn't stop me from thinking the prices are a bit steep and I am sure the price will put others off. Reducing prices, particularly for the youngsters, will encourage more to attend - more attending will improve the atmosphere - a better atmosphere will provide a better match day experience and perhaps also help the performance on the pitch. Folk may argue that if you cut the admission by 25% you are unlikely to see a 25% increase in numbers but it is not as simple as that. If paying less to get in you are more likely to buy a programme, more likely to buy a 50:50 ticket and more likely to buy refreshments. You end up spending much the same or maybe even more but just feel you have got better value. Coupled with a good marketing campaign there would be a real opportunity to boost the fan base (vital for the long term future) as well as increasing overall revenue. The other thing that I don't think has been mentioned is revenue from transfers. It seems that most players are being signed on short term contracts of 2 years at most. Apart from a worry that this strategy relies on making "finds" every year and hard negotiations with them the following year to keep them at the club, this strategy gives us no income from transfers. Contracts of 3 or 4 years carry the risk that injury or failure to fulfil potential will mean we end up paying for donkeys but there must be a happy medium where players like Rooney keen to develop their careers can be sold on whilst still in contract. There must be players who would welcome 2 year contracts rather than 1 and probably local lads who would happily sign for a 3 or 4 year contract at fairly low wages in order to have a real opportunity to develop and put them in the spotlight. If they blossom then they will want to move on to higher wages and can be sold. If they don't then most would probably still be useful squad players and the few that really disappoint aren't going to cost that much in any case or could be given free transfers to get them off the wage bill. There are real risks with longer term contracts for high wage players but low risk and opportunity for considerable returns with unproven young players of the sort we are signing. We have a good youth system and a knack of finding good young players from down South but we don't make any money out of them. Indeed, they end up costing us as those who impress and we want to keep cost a lot more when their contract is renewed.
  12. I disagree. It looks absolutely clear that there was no contact. Lennon clearly said someting to Juanjo which caused him to turn and respond close to, but there is no jerking of the head and no associated other body movement which might be expected to go with a head butt. Juanjo's reaction and body language followed by the way he turns away from the incident are entirely consistent with a simple verbal response of "don't be so stupid" or words to that effect. Lennon's reaction comes well after any alleged contact. Lennon cheated at the time and he's lying about it now. Lennon does himself no favours by trying to defend one of the more shameful episodes in his career. Celtic have been embarrassed by ICT on too many occasions for his liking and he is simply trying to tarnish the image of the club by way of retaliation. It's pathetic and my simple message to him is
  13. Wow! Is there no end to the inventiveness of those tykes?
  14. Maybe the jury consisted of 12 referees.
  15. Inore him, SotonICT. Rocpool reserve is an upmarket French Restaurant. It's not bad though. One the one occasion I went, there was skirt of beef on offer followed by a clasic tarte au citron. It was the first time in years I'd been out on the town of a Friday night for a bit of skirt and and a tart.
  16. Man Utd have a striker called Berbatov who they don't appear to need. Perhaps Terry could arrange a loan deal to keep his match fitness up?
  17. He would bring a bit of spirit to the side
  18. ...and rather more in the stands, I fear.
  19. The youngsters who will be playing are considered good enough to be in squad of an SPL side. If that option was not open to them there would be a queue of Highland League clubs waiting to sign them up. First team players or not, I would expect that whatever side is fielded should beat Forres. No pressure, lads!
  20. There were 18 teams in the old Scottish First Division when Celtic won the European Cup in 67 though you may be referring to the fact that there are only 10 teams in the League of Ireland Premier Division. Shamrock Rovers' turnover is also less than 2% that of the Old Filth which helps to put the scale of the failure of the OF in perspective. Their failure diminshes Scottish Football and we will all suffer the consequences of that. Interestingly Shamrock Rovers' leading scorer is a Scot called Twigg. It seems there is very little incentive for talented young Scots to ply their trade in Scotland these days. Let's hope the national team can restore a bit of pride and give the game the boost it so desparately needs.
  21. All this doom and gloom reminds me of what was being said here early in the season a couple of years ago. Remind me how many points we won the league by that season!
  22. He's gone. It's a shame. There is no point speculating on the reasons. We move on and he will soon be forgotton.
  23. Bit of a contradiction there? You want to meet someone who is more dedicated than you to supporting a team through thick and thin? How about speaking to someone who has supported the same team all their life? They do exist, you know! Maybe wombles have a different outlook on things to the rest of us.
