  1. Sadly for me, missed our European debut as I was away on holiday. Whilst I can see why we signed a second experienced 'keeper to cover while Brill remains sidelined, I am very disappointed that that 'keeper went straight into the team for this historic match ahead of Ryan Esson. Ryan stepped into the breach in the latter part of the season and fully played his part in securing European qualification through his performances in both the league and cup. Surely, he had earned the reward of playing in the European tie he had helped to make possible. A poor decision in my view.
  2. No, you've just turned into an Aberdonian
  3. Need to take the game to them. Don't really have any other option. For me - Esson Raven Warren Meekings Williams Draper Tansey Doran Christie Roberts Foran Subs - Fon Williams, Devine, Lopez, Wedderburn, Polworth, Horner, Tremarco* *If Tremarco is injured, bring Brown into the squad.
  4. Get your hotel room in Basel booked. Could take some elderly relations along too.
  5. 1 point
Maybe the type of player that's needed to operate alongside Lopez or Foran to allow them to play more of a poacher type function?
  6. I am the only one that is beginning to feel that this is BETTER than the Cup Final ?
  7. Malky Thomson last month was named head coach of Indian league club Salgaocar
  8. Looks like we need to play in red shorts and socks!! Keeper may be nervous after that performance. Doran used to score goals like the third. Meekings on long throws could be potent. That said, our defence needs to be solid.
  9. I would go with the opening post X1 but it looks like Williams will be in goal. I can also see the logic in starting with five at the back but that really weakens our midfield and is a very difficult system to get out of, especially if you concede. We are strong enough defensively with the back four plus Tansey and Draper. Width of Doran, guile of Roberts, running and attacking support of Christie sounds good. Reckon that we will go for broke and play Foran up front. We will certainly be dangerous from dead ball situations and the Europeans do not like the long throw in scenario either. Any progress is however strongly dependent on our defence being solid, 100% concentration and no stupid fouls. That is difficult to do pre-season but the incentive of the Hammers must also come in to play. I actually have a good feeling about this.
  10. no worries mate I was under the impression that they did too but my St Mirren colleague at work has told me that they don't. He he also warned me about Carbrini's sizing issues and how the tops are tiny so be aware when ordering Feck me - what size should I ask fer ? I think it's called 'darts player'
  11. I think, with the players we had available, it was a decent performance last night from the team. With the injuries we have, not a lot of options for Yogi so although line up a surprise, probably not any real alternatives. I suspect some were also not fully fit both on the pitch and on the bench. Some surprising views on performances last night and as someone has already said, Warren was my MOM. Don't get all the praise for Ryan last night though. Sure he worked hard and covered all of the pitch but that was part of the problem. He needed to be closer to Lopez to support him and needs to learn to pass more often rather than run with the ball. He will learn but no way was he MOM. Wedderburn did okay for the most part and was not out of place while as many folk have said, Draper was poor last night and seemed way of the pace needed at this level.
  12. Thats fine if there's movement ahead. If not, the opposition just compress the space and you end up either going back or long. Last night there wasn't enough movement up front.
  13. I thought the crowd was excellent, then they scored. Totally against the run of play and it took the wind out of our sails. We struggled to create a chance and when we did get into good positions we wasted it often. But in saying that, they were very well organised defensively. If we can go at them again like that next week and have another weeks training under our belts we'll have a wee chance maybe, although I expect them to also be much better next week. I didn't think their time wasting was that bad and I thought their diving would be a lot worse. Have a feeling it'll be diving and rolling about all over the place on Thursday though. I also thought the referee was very good and one or two of our officials could learn off him!
  14. Probably echoing a lot of what's been said before, but here goes... We were unlucky to lose that. Our performance was excellent, especially considering our lack of competitive games. The passing in the first 15 minutes was particularly impressive, and their goal was a huge blow because it came well against the run of play. I wish fans would show more patience with the passing game. They pass sideways to keep possession and to create space - it's a far better idea than punting hopeful long balls. The individual performances: Fon Williams - I imagine he'll be fine with a game or two under his belt, but he looked rusty and my first instinct was that he should have kept that free kick out Meekings - looked like a centre-back playing out of position. Defended well. Was willing to get forward but offered nothing in attack Warren - Excellent, hard to remember him putting a foot wrong. My MOTM Devine - Does look dodgy in possession on occasion but played well Williams - Needs to work on his positioning when we're defending, but he was a great outlet. Give him a few more months to learn the position and he'll do very well Wedderburn - Looks like he ate one of the subs for his pre-match meal. Slow and ponderous, but actually decent in possession and broke up play quite well. He could be very useful once he gets up to fitness Draper - Not a great performance. Unnecessarily gave away the free kick they scored from. Gave the ball away too cheaply and too often. We probably only need one of him or Wedderburn for league games - who would you choose? Tansey - After a bright start, he struggled to have much influence until he dropped deeper later in the game. His set-piece delivery was good Doran - Looks like he's been eating salad all summer. Always looking for the ball and generally used it well Christie - It never quite came off for him in the final third, but his touch was good and he covered the whole pitch looking for the ball Lopez - Good with his back to goal, but will he score many? Can't really be judged until he is fully fit.
  15. Disappointing result. Don't think we deserved to lose, but we need some bite up front. Seemed a strange decision to throw Fon Wiiliams in for this one, seemed OK, but I think he'd probably like to face the free kick again. He also had a Jamie MacDonald moment in the first half, but fortunately he pushed it away hard enough to beat the on rushing attacker. I thought he'd made a good save near the end, but I think it actually hit the post Warren snd Devine played pretty well together at the back, although Devine gave the keeper a nasty, bouncy back pass to deal with. Meekings seemed off the pace, particularly after his performances at right back at the end of last season. Williams had a decent game at left back. The midfield confused me. Wedderburn, Draper and Tansey are all too similar in style. Thought Wedderburn did ok, Draper had a stinker, not least conceding that cheap free kick. Tansey just did what he does, but slightly further forward, and I'm not sure why he was MoM - certainly wasn't for his ridiculous dive in the first half. Doran was probably our biggest goal threat, with a scuffed shot in the first half, a placed shot that the keeper saved just inside his post and a more powerful shot that I thought the keeper had let go through him for a moment. Christie had a decent game. Up front, Lopez's best work was done outside the box - not what you need from you striker. He had one good chance, but the shot lacked conviction. The subs didn't get long enough to judge, but it was good to see Foran back. On the basis of tonight, we are not out of this tie by any means. With a bit more sharpness we might have done something with some of the balls into the box. However, we need to make more effective use of width, as we spent too much time trying to play through the middle, which isn't going to work. The he one down side was that we reverted to passing the ball sideways for long periods again. It was a bit like the second half of season 2013-14 again at times. At the start of the second half, when we started to move the ball forward with a bit of pace, we looked like we might cause some problems. I thought the ref had a decent game. Certainly not over officious, and didn't buy the worst of the Romanian play acting. Land I reckon there were 25 away fans - I counted them during a bit of dying-swan routine near the end.
  16. To be honest I thought we actually played pretty well. First 15 mins we were excellent. Their goal was certainly against the run of play. Can't decide whether it was a great free kick, or bad goalkeeping. There was certainly only one place the ball was going to go...and it did. Second half we upped the tempo a bit. Doran was unlucky with a shot the keeper somehow managed to scoop up over the bar. And another he curled just past the post. When we went more direct we got them a bit rattled. To many times in the first half we were content to just pass it meaninglessly between midfield and defence. One thing that was very noticeable was that we were pretty toothless up front. Lopez started off ok, but faded badly. There waa to little support for him from midfield as well, and more often than not he was too isolated. We're still in it though. We've certainly nothing to fear over there and if we can grab an early equaliser then..game on. Astra looked neat and tidy on the ball, but were nowhere near as good a team as I was expecting. Not too sure who I'd pick as Motm...certainly not Tansey, the sponsors choice. Christie, or maybe Warren.
