Why Hughes should STAY!

I could obviously post this in the SACKED thread...but I hate seeing negative thread titles about managers (in capital letters!) so here goes

  1. So we had a bad run in March...but we had a great run in February; when we were unbeaten, why doesn't that count?, if everytime a club has a bad run they sack the manager that would see a couple of changes every season (like Fulham this season in the EPL)

  2. Managers have to be allowed to work things through sometimes, getting out of a hole is often more instructive to a manager than a run where nothing goes wrong....sadly this too often isn't allowed to happen (in the EPL especially, yet Norwich and West Ham probably will stay up because they didn't panic and sack the manager)

  3. Many posters on here have said that Terry Butcher didn't have a plan B..... given that our entire striking option for the last two seasons has been Billy McKay, and the board haven't provided any alternative, and most SPFL clubs know what to expect. Hughes is trying something different, but getting this to work consistently wont happen overnight

  4. The likes of Marley Watkins and Ryan Christie (and Williams to a lesser extent) are being given their chance under Hughes. In additional Aaron Doran seems to be thriving under Hughes stewardship

  5. Under Hughes we will surely finish in the top six for a second year running, which I think is a massive achievement. He does seem to have be able to maintain the team spirit.

  6. We got to the League Cup final, and in my opinion did very well against the club second in the country (in a great run of form), I think Hughes can take some credit for that

  7. All our key players seem to be very keen to extend their contracts, Vincent in particular was a good result along with Draper...the players must have some faith in Yogi?

  8. A couple of 0-5 reverses are disappointing, but don't discount the fact we were so close to a Cup Final (does strange things to the mindset of a player), the manager can't do too much if key players who have been playing well all season make a couple of mistakes...it's a long season for a small squad. The same can happen to more fancied teams (Like Arsenal in the EPL, 0-6, 3-6, and a 0-5)

  9. We won yesterday so surely everything is alright again....but seriously; stability is a good thing for a club to have, and provided the club do something about getting a decent alternative/additional striker to McKay (preferrably one who is taller, and can also hold the ball up) then I think Hughes should be in charge for next season and we will see what he is capable of. We should only consider a change if there is evidence that 'all the wheels have fallen off the cart', and that Yogi has 'lost' the dressing room

There rests the case for the defence, M'lud

  • Sorry to get into this DD, but having spoken to Yogi after almost every game of his tenure thus far, he hasn't changed his philosophy one jot. It's simple - if we keep the ball the opposition can't hu

DD, your post is most disappointing all things considered. If not completely  depressing it is not exactly uplifting and inspiring coming from a supposed true follower.   Why even bother to mention

What you are seeing now is a group who have outgrown TB's legacy and surpassed it with some ease.

That's an amazing stat! But, sadly, not quite true! In 96/97 on the way to our first promotion, we had 47 points from 22 games. Damn!

But having 44 from 22 games in the top-flight is staggering.

Yeah, I did wonder about that season Sneckboy when I heard the stat.

I wondered if they just meant top flight seasons?

It's not good enough - 5 points off the mark.  Hughes must go...  :amazed:

Man I loved that 96/97 season!  Also to this day my favourite ICT top.  :ictscarf:

I confess, I underestimated John Hughes - but am delighted to admit it! Although we've players to get signed-up, I agree with Kingsmills (from an earlier post) that we should be looking to extend the manager's contract. He's proved his worth.

I was a huge Terry Butcher fan but the club will always be bigger than any personality.

Here's a table to celebrate both Terry and Yogi's time at the club - and Robbo's, of course! But, Paterson (for me) remains the 'God' for improving our then novice club, year-on-year in the Scottish League.

Key:

Red = best ever

Year = season ending (ie 2004/05 = 2005)

Any entry = 'best ever' or equalled 'best ever', at the time

New nomenclature used ie (old 3rd Division = League Two)

I must say I am enjoying the various insights from people...and I rather agree with Kingsmills that Yogi's next big test (aside from finishing 3rd in the league and beating Partick in the Cup) is the summer transfer window when Graham Shinnie and Billy McKay may have departed ...and when we may get bids for Watkins, Christie and Meekings (dreading the thought)

One thing that I think is being recognised is that a) Yogi has maintained ICT's stature in the upper level of the SPL, whilst b) having changed the style of football, and c) having found different sources of goals than just McKay

#justsaying  ;-)

Theres nothing wrong with praising Hughes's style of football and criticising Butcher's but why weren't these people saying that at the time? In fact, it used to be the case that any hint of criticism of their then Dear Leader, was met with a jumping down of the throat within a matter of minutes. How times have changed...

A tipsy Slovak, a sailor boy, goes into a pub in Hamburg, Germany, sits down at the bar, looks at the guy sitting next to him and says... "My name's Vyshinski - Vyshinski,  with a hyphen. What's yours?"

The Scotsman, also a  mariner, looks him up and down and replies " a whisky and a steiner of good beer, laddie."

If the rumours are correct, suggesting Kilmarnock's Allan Johnston will be sacked this morning, John Hughes will remarkably be the current 5th longest-serving Premiership manager at just one-year and two-months!

I decided to bump this given Yogi's achievement of a second Semi final in 12ish months and a Final :notworthy:

And still being in 3rd place at this time of the season....even if this is partly to do with Dundee Utd's implosion, given our small squad (and barely an orthodox striker to boot)  it is still a major achievement :clapoverhead: , although I would suspect hanging onto this place with the Final coming up will be a tough call, let's face it who wants to pick up an injury now?

If we win the Cup and get into the Europa League next season, he should definitely stay

Next season could be a toughie though

Am I allowed to say it yet?

Why should Hughes stay...................are you being serious ?
