  1. Scotty -you are right on the ball. I doubled the dollars and cents instead of halfing it. Just threw that in, of course :002:, to see if you would pick up on it. ****, he did. :004: I went to the pump again today and nearly died when I saw the price--$1.48 (74 pence) per litre. I know that trying to sell my van (SUV 3.3 litre engine, getting 23 mpgallon, will be a hard road. The car dealer offered me $600 for a trade when I deliriously thought it was worth $6,900. Good job I had paid it off a while back. With even Saudi Arabia stating that the price of oil/gas is needlessly high (because George Bush phoned the King and said .." look here, if this increase continues we will all be in the poor house and the the economy will also be with us there so, come out with a statement that will help us..blah..blah.." the King he did complieth because he sold the oil shares to George an his father originally and THAT's why nobody was allowed to leave the U.S. immediately after 9-11 EXCEPT the Saudi Princes!) it is clear that we are being literally robbed blind by the oil barons so what's the answer? Park the car and take the skytrain --and I won't miss it one bit-the traffic is horrendous here in the big city. After a couple of hours trying to get home you arrive feeling like a wet dishrag which has just been wrung out . And you poor folkd over in the U.K even drive on the wrong side of the road which must be totally :015:frightening....
  2. Scotty --the Canadian Federal Goods and Services (GST) tax is currently 5%-remember it started at 7% in 1991 and has been reduced twice. Provincial tax (at least in British Columbia) is still at 7% on virtually all goods. Property taxes per annum for me have gone up 17.7% on the net tax position even after the application of the Seniors grant of $845 which is a deduction from the gross taxes and this year the net is again up another 4.7%. Property in Vancouver and District here on the WEst coast of Canada costs a fortune. That house that Bob shows you would almost certainly be situated in the British Properties (highest prices in Canada) in West Vancouver overlooking the Pacific Ocean and there would probably go for at least 2 to 3 million or more. A bachelor single flat in the heart of downtown--$1,000,000; a townhouse of 2600 square feet in a decent district on the outskirts of town comprising 4 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms, living room/dining room and kitchen would be at least $430,000. A two bedroom apartment in the suburbs about $300,000 depending on location and quality. In a choice high-rise building overlooking the Burrard Inlet then the price would more likely be upwards, or over, $400,000 with the penthouse definitely near to $500,000. On the other hand, a perfectly acceptable accommodation for a young couple would be a mobile home with two bedrooms in a decent Mobile Home park going for $70,000 or less even .It would have a parking pad, a shed , some grass round the unit , a bathroom, kitchen and a living-room and the pad rental would be $600 per month. And a wee deck on the side upon which to sit on a Summer's evening with a glass of wine watching the occasional sun going down. Price of gas (petrol) here is now $1.31 per litre ---two pound sixty ,roughly. It's getting to the point that people are scared to run the car and I am selling my SUV which only gets 23 MPG since I have now formally retired from my presenty occupation. It's fi nancial pruning time for me and no mistake. It rains here in Vancouver for up to nine months steady and three months of good sunshine if you are lucky. Winters are relatively mild but in the past a snowfall would last a couple of days but now it is 3 weeks on the ground. Rivers flooding is also now a real problem and we missed a big flood last year by one inch. Phew! This past Winter was the coldest on record (see Scotty's comments above) and I put my long-johns back on a week ago I was so cold (imagine that --in June). Standard of living here in Canada is indeed high--high-speed Internet is now becoming standard, every family has at least two cars and often the teenage kids have their own. MKany families either have a jacuzzi or a sauna. But University or College is very costly and , unless you are lucky to get a Grant you pay for all of it. My stepson, aged 21, has just paid $16,000 (after a Grant of $5,000 reduced the cost ) to go one year for a computer graphics course downtown. He is up at 5 a.m. , then bus to train, train into downtown.Returns home by reversing the route and gets home at about 4.30p.m. Then he studies until midnight. But he likes it and that is a relief since he also paid a whack for a culinary course , passed O.K. but then quit because the trainer Chef shouted at his pupils. I told him that he should have told the guy to shout at his ears and not his eyes..but? :004: Canada is great for all kinds of sporting activities , especially hiking and downhill skiing. Lots and lots of great ski hills especially at Vancouver and 80 kilometers up the road Whistler and Blackcomb which have so many runs that your head will spin just reading the run guide.Cross country skiing is also very popular, trail bike riding, horse riding (dude ranche which apparently is a lot of fun), river rafting (EXCITING), rock climbing, skydiving is big if you are a granny (rightenuff), gliding and many other things. Check us out for a holiday . Scotty and Scarlet will help you along with the Canajin language. And the beer is quite good too-- what is the favourite--you guessed it, "Canadian". Cheers S.P.
  3. If he does indeed get a pacey matey , or two, he may well be worth keeping. But otherwise he could simply be a very exopensiev niuc eman in shorts. :024:
  4. The reason being that I have just spoken and it's not yet your turn. Until I say "eh"? Which is taught from birth :pram:------ :cdn:
  5. Eh? That's Canajin for --"did you hear what I said, I need you to reply before I continue, to stop my being lonely." In other words--your views are of a secondary nature compared to mine, I am not really asking for your opinion but an affirmative grunt will suffice. :002: An alternative meaning is ''what I just said makes sense to me . What do you think, provided you agree with me ? Funny old language is Canajin. At least you can speak it without gesticulating with your hands as in Quebec, like. :015: A for Canajin gossip I hear Shania Twain has broken up with her husband. Is that relevant? :014: "EH" does not, in the normal course of conversation, mean "I am slightly deaf and I need you to repeat it".
  6. Does Bo dabble in treachery or does he simply have a big nose...? :015:
  7. An event---I agree with Smee's initial post. Give the fellow a deadline and stick to it. :012: As for IHE , a finer lad never graced the pages of this august forum. Kepps everyopne girny and irritated when they simply could be ....bored. And Scotty what does touching the cloth mean? Hands off my kilt now>>>> :018:
  8. At these wages he would have to be playing like Superman to rate as anything like value for money. Sorry, I dont think IMO that any player is worth that. For them it is hardly a job merely an avocation with a long mid-year holiday and all paid for by the club. Sigh... and I am now too old even to get a game. :003:
  9. Mantis you old rogue :015: You have sussed me out . Happens too often fer comfort. By the way forgive me--I thought that teams should progress on merit and not location, re entry to the SFL. Senior moments are coming on faster than flurries of snow on the top of my head. Buit there agin that's Canaga. :sillywave:
  10. Automated response first then a more personal reply today. Quite impressed me and I am still quivering with excitement. Once a fan always a fan..Sighh---it feeels soooo gooood. :003:
  11. IMHO Barrowman would be foolish to turn down ICT in favour of ,say, an English team for the reasons well stated above in this thread. In view of the fact that a prominent player like Marius can come back into serious International contention after only one season in the SPL with Caley Thistle it should be obvious that the opportunity for Barrowman in the hands of Brewster is huge. Not only will be probably get a good chance of being in the first team consistently, unless he cannot make the step up to SPL football all at once but ,if he does, his performance should improve weekly. So at the end of the season his value will have increased but at his age he is still far from a sesoned pro and, like many more before him, he may fade into obscurity. ICT, on the other hand should hedge their bets by getting him on a 2 year deal with, if possible a third season as an option at their discretion not his. Barrowman is in fact 1st Division material because Ross County is a 1st Division team so he must be smart enough to realise that a fair wage plus 1st team football with ICT could be the making of him. If he tries to hold out for a huge paycheck then IMHO (I am very humble tonight :003: ) should forget him and simply move on. Untried SPL players are interesting but come without :012: Guarantees.
  12. Jeez Jock, my previous post was made two pages ago. I guess at 75 you have just been able to wake up frae a wee snooze. :003: It's now happening to me too --suddenly run out of energy at 4p.m. Conk out, fall asleep for three hours and then can't get to sleep at midnight at bedtime. So stay up to go on this forum. :014:
  13. I told you that you were FUNNY MAN, CMIB :001:
  14. We could take hm on a trial and get him to sign a waiver of wages if his injuries continue? :002: "It's not personal it's only business " and if he don't score the goals he aint' gonna get the big money or the big chance. Forget it.! And I know Clacher agrees with me . :004:
  15. So where do Cove play out of? i.e what town? As for Gretna I have just read a good article about Gretna and the devastating effects the failure has had , and always will have, on the lives of many people close to /associated with the club. Everybody from cleaners to restaurant workers to simple administration staff who never saw this coming. I think it will be very difficult now , especially in the light of Brooks Milesome's illness, to determine whether he or his family actually abandoned the club and the aforementioned workers to their fate, as in the "well, it's not personal, it's just business"syndrome, or whether in fact he and his family have gone bankrupt. I doubt the latter very much indeed, even if the blame is laid at the door of his son rather than himself in his hospital bed whilst he was very ill--- the unmistakable stench of desertion is linkering as if the younger man had a greater cupidity for money than his dad, but the truth is that IMHO this was seen by the family as a whole to be a distinct possibility in the run up to the end and equally unmistakably plans were made to save the fortune whilst the common folk were abandoned to their fate. The list of outstanding debts is long and daunting and some of the sums of money owed to them is large enough to be scary.Such that it is clear that little attempt was made, probably deliberately, so that any payments would be made not from the family funds in the Bank(s) but from the eventual sale of Raydale park . The conclusion of Pat Nevin, the writer of the article that I read, puts the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Milesome family AND on the SPL for ever allowing this to develop, because of the lax and inadequate financial tests applied to the likes of Gretna's entry into the ranks of the SFL. I agree with his summary and his warning in the final segment to the effect that the SFL had better do something radical to ensure that this debacle and cruel outcome does not occur again in the foreseeable future or it will happen again. If Milesome AND his family are not bankrupt theh they should have met their obligatiuons to those who supported them.Period. I know that was, and is, the right thing to do since I was in that position in a restaurant venture of my own which ended very badly in 1992 and which ultimately cost me my house (and my car-sob) I escaped bankruptcy but only achieved that by paying off all my debts in full because these people had supported me through the bad times and the Bank in particular had funded my operation to an extent which was probably (at least in hindsight) unmerited by the initial application for Credit and the subsequent results as they developed in a deteriorating situation. But the main reason is that these suppliers of services had faith in my personal integrity and in some cases did not even ask me to pay them out and when that happens it is a heavy burden on your conscience which cannot be ignored. When you walk away you feel completely stunned but can at least live with yourself even if it meant that I had to work until I was 70 to recover from the financial debacle. There is no pension when you are in business for yourself. :011:
  16. One thing I have to say about you MEE is you have a good sense of humour. Kinda balances out your bouts of insomnia brought on by your equally hialrious occasional fits of sarcasm.
  17. Assistant coach to Brew--standing ready to move in to the main role if Brew does not deliver?
  18. Feck the corner Bob--I have just fallen off the ladder permanently..... As for Mrs Jones and her three car garage in the British Properties (the most expensive Real Estate in Canada)--you know the bird who dragged me three miles up the winding hill to get a free estimate and when I had given it to her she replied in an aggressive indignant tone of voice""sniff ( that's in for effect) why are you so expensive"? To which I replied with lips pursed in anger..." not as expensive as that Mercedes parked there in the garage"!. There was a stunned silence as her face turned blue with discomfort and and resentment but she could not think of a word to say. BUT SUDDENLY ,HER HUBBY WHO WAS STANDING THERE WATCHING THE ACTION, BURST OUT LAUGHING HIS HEAD OFF AS I THOUGHT ."YOUR'E A SPORT LAD BUT JUST WAIT TILL SHE GETS YOU INSIDE THE HOUSE..IT'LL BE THE SOFA FOR YOU ALONE TONIGHT MATE". I GUESS HER $1,000 DOLLAR A MONTH ALLOWANCE HAD BEEN EARMARKED FOR A NEW DRESS OR A NEW PAIR OF GUCCI SHOES AND she was thinking THIS MAN CAME UP TO MY PALACE AND SPOILED IT ALL. I will, also miss this one from the plebs who live down below in Ambleside village who told me that the very rich who park their cars outside in the Winter a mile up on the top of the hill make a point of driving down to shop the next day after a snowfall to do their shopping in Ambleside so that these same plebs can see the snow on the top of the car to remember who is the successful top :dancing01:.. :015: On the other hand my customer the Lieutenant Governor of the Province of British Columbia, and his wife, amongst others, was a though gentleman and lady when they greeted me to do a wee jobbie for them. Don't think there is no class snobbery in Canada--it's ALL about money here.! :029:
  19. Hii Scoty Watched Toronto against L.A. yesterday on the telly. I thought L.A. werwe a pretty slick team but they simply had no finishing power and no Beckham to boost them. Where was he this week--tootling around Britain giving off his big smile eh? and Toronto were all over them at the end. Good win Scotty. Great crowd, man, however do you do it? Much bigger seating arrrangements of course --thguis some greater options I suppoose for promotion. ICT eat your heart out.
  20. ER--looks like I may have stumbled into the teenage pool hall....but...then I saw Manfer's name and I thought if it is O.K. to step in the door at his advanced age I might as well risk it too. :004: Anyway, you young 'uns, the smartest comment I noted on here was from another "Mature" poster... IHE. But don't be fooled by his mastery of the written word-- when he refers to the Nipp Inn on Grant Street don't believe a word of it. All you have to do to find out where he really goes for his regular bevvy is to read that name backwards. :015: Hi IHE . :sillywave:
  21. Thou hast the Midas touch Bob. :sillywave:
  22. Here in Canada, if there is no a screw loose, then there is a Moose loose aboot the hoose. :003: So go easy on us Canucks ,we are a challenged race of hybrids, cross-breds, Metis , Cree, Mohawk, Haida and multi-cultural cross-dressing wannabes. :002: Keep winding them up Bob. :015: Man oh man I hope I have as much time as you to spend on such crap as this when I retire (as in stop working in any profession, line of work, gainful employment, ) this evening, 31 May 2008, a date that will live in my mind forever. Come to think about it I can see that retirement is in fact gainful unemployment. :016:
  23. Behind the pianoforte where I thought I would not be seen...... :016:
  24. Everything said about me above is undoubtedly true and since I am now in the wine business with the intention of making a mint of money I give the nod to the old favourite because I need to make a buck-fast ,don't you know. :001: But port wine remains my favourite in truth since it was the first drink I stole from my Mammy's liqueur cabinet whilst fighting puberrty. That and a fag which had unfortunate consequences since the latter forced me to go green as a goosegog and sick as a dog. :015:
