Football legend Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60.

The former Argentina attacking midfielder and manager had successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier in November.

It was then announced he was to be treated for alcohol dependency.

One of the greatest players of all time, Maradona was captain when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup, producing a series of sublime individual performances. 

A fantastic player!

For me the greatest. A stratospheric but  turbulent career laced with the age-old inability to handle fame and adulation. A story and a half that has prematurely, but not surprisingly , come to an end.

Great memories

A shame ... great player, but like many great players, flawed and susceptible to outside influences that cut short career and life. Off to add star power to the George Best XI now. RIP. 

We all love the 'hand of Maradona' goal from '86 but his second in that game has to have been one of the greatest individual goals ever scored at a World Cup (after Archie Gemmill of course). Also found this 50 best skill moments video that have some amazing moves in it. Wow. What a player and what a shame. 

 

 

Might sound cruel, but in some ways I'm surprised he's even lasted this long when it wouldn't be all that unsurprising if it was revealed his habit had practically built the Colombian economy. Anyone else on Colombian Sugar would be dead in a year if they followed his footsteps.

Odd that Scotty should mention both George Best and Diego Maradona.

By far, the two best players that I have ever been privileged to watch live.

Flawed geniuses for sure but exquisitely talented footballers nevertheless.

Messi and Ronaldo have been, without doubt, the greatest players of this century so far but neither could match Maradona at the height of his abilities.

All the more given that the height of his abilities was just 5’5”!
 

Had he been been a youngster at a club in Scotland, he’d probably have been released at 17 due to being too small for our physical game, and would have spent his career in the Highland League.

Mind you, for his small stature he could certainly jump - does anyone remember that time he leapt above Shilton to score in the 1986 World Cup?

 

I had the fortune to be at Hampden park that day to see the world champions.  We had never heard of Diago Maradona but we all agreed after the game in the pub that we had witnessed a real talent! How right we were!

I was at hampden a few years later when we beat the reigning champions, minus the hand of God.

He died on the same date as George Best as well.
