  1. As it happens I met Allan at the game on Saturday and he confirmed that he had shops at 16 and then 68 Eastgate. The mealstore part of his business came about when the owner of the original meal shop was killed in a car accident and Allan was asked to add this to his original lines. Then he moved into the Health Food side of things, eventually ending up in Baron Taylor's St where he bought the shop there from Burnetts the Bakers. His son Martin now runs the shop. I made the point that the Health Shop is a sole beacon of good living in Baron Taylor St which also has two bars (including the less than salubrious Moray and Keg(?) as well as two bookies. In fact if you add to that the boarded up former Arnotts (Benzie and Millers or Young and Chapman if you're even older!) and the defunct Thistle Social Club along with the less than healthy looking people who stand outside smoking fags (with the smell of smoke filling the street!)... then Baron Taylor's St. has to be about the most depressing thoroughfare in Inverness. You are quite right there Charles. Baron Taylor's Street has to be the most down-at-heel thoroughfare in the "Old Town". Thirty years ago it had such a diversity of shops. Yes, very depressing.
  2. Politicians inhabit a cosy little gravy train world with the media and the real voters don't get a look in. Even at elections these days the whole thing is so stage managed and seems designed to keep politicians as far away from real voters as possible. Political meetings used to be worth going to but now they just don't seem to happen. Any meeting featuring the main party leaders have been turned into a party rally with an audience full of party members, designed to look good on TV and to give the illusion of no opposition. Even local MPs seem terrified to be approached by a voter. Is it any wonder that turnout in General Elections has been steadily falling in recent years ? It's about time politics and the political process was given back to the people.
  3. Spurs are 1 - 0 up against Bolton. Redknapp effect already ?
  4. 1st single - Fireball XL5 by Don Spencer 1st EP - Twist & Shout by The Beatles 1st LP - A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles Still have them all.
  5. Clive Rowlands' first shop in Sneck was in the old Navy recruiting office next to the La Scala. Years ahead of his time selling outdoor gear. Leakey's first bookshop was in a wee upstairs place in one of the closes off Baron Taylor's Street. What a busy and vibrant shopping centre Sneck was in those days. What a pity the old town centre has gone back so much in recent years. Looking back, Sneck was really quite a good place to set up in business but that was years ago before the multiple stores moved in. Not such an easy place to make a living in a shop these days.
  6. I think Alan Sellar who later became Provost of Sneck ran the mealstore and he later opened the health shop in Union Street which moved to Baron Taylor's Street. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  7. I have a second hand Sony LBT-XB80AV which has a turntable quite adequate for playing the old vinyls. Don't knock Sony - it still works fine and the sound is really good.
  8. Keep this kind of vitriol and hatred out of Caley Thistle. It has never had a place in football in Sneck and for goodness sake don't let it get a toehold at the Dump. We should be doing all we can to stamp this out and rid Scottish football of this cancer forever.
  9. I think Obama will win but when American voters go into the polling booth will it be then that they decide whether they want an African American president ? Could well be closer than we think. My own concern with him is his lack of experience. As for McCain - is he really the best the Republicans can come up with ?
  10. Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles Disraeli Gears - Cream Led Zeppelin II - Led Zep Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix Experience Layla - Derek and the Dominoes Aye, great thread.

    Hello all!

I hope that all goes well for you in Sneck. Welcome to the forum too ! I think the Highlands is one of the best place for walking / hill walking and Sneck is an ideal base.
  12. Must give this new Millburn Chippy a try next time I'm up in Sneck for a home game.
  13. I used to live in Cradlehall and they certainly tried to put some sort of fast food outlet / chippie where the shops are but there were a chorus of objections from the local residents because of smell, litter, etc. Not really a bad thing at all that there's not one there.
  14. We can't afford to be without Blackie for very long as he's key to our midfield. Sounds as though we've been, yet again, very unlucky to come away without at least a point from one of these so-called big clubs. All I can say is well done lads.
  15. Aye, thanks for looking after the site and protecting it.
  16. The Club Bar was on Inglis Street, just down from where Boots used to be. Popular town centre bar which, I think, closed down in the late 1970s.
  17. Just about the only two unchanging locations on Queensgate are the Post Office and Duncan Frasers. Over the years there have been so many shops and businesses which have come and gone. Duncan Duffy the travel agent, the Clydesdale Bank which became Hayden's, Campbells the ironmongers, Imperial Typewriters, Shand & Lindsay which became the Britannia Building Society ( now long gone from Sneck ), Queensgate Electrical. Anyone recall more ?
  18. Do you remember the old Eastgate before the Eastgate Centre took over ? Quite a thriving centre of small shops, pubs and other businesses - Rosie's cafe, Marios, Riggs the butchers, Wards the newsagent, Fraser & McColls, Ernie Mason's, the Plough Inn. Loads of character now sadly gone and lost forever.
  19. At 3,426 a disappointing attendance again. Another sign that the credit crunch is biting ?
  20. Yes, there was an ironmongers in Hamilton Street. It was called Mitchells and in the years before it closed down it was owned by Gilbert Ross. When it did shut down quite a few of the staff were moved to Gilbert Ross's big shop in Invergordon.
  21. Well done lads. Excellent result. :D :P :021: :D :D :D :D :015: :D :thumb04: :018: ;)
  22. Very sorry indeed to hear this sad news. Craig was a real Sneck character. R.I.P. Craig.
  23. Richard Hastings scored according to Chick Young.
