When was the last time we scored direct from a free kick? I can't remember. The standard of our free kicks are awful...not just yesterday, but always. If we get a one around the edge of the area you just know there's two likely scenarios...it either hits the wall or ends up in row z. Obviously the players must practice them, and I'm sure they work well on the training ground, but how come they never work when it matters.

Absolutely shocking stuff. How can professional footballers fail, in numerous attempts, to get the ball anywhere near the vicinity of the goal?

I fail to get excited when we get a free kick around the box because the delivery is always pants! This is a specialist skill and there should be a nominated taker from each side (left and right footed). If we haven't got anybody with the skill to shoot from that range, then do something different: half the other team are tied up in a wall, so there must be bodies free somewhere. This is one (maybe the only) area where the shadow-dwelleres have been better thna us over the past few years - Vigurs and Brittain are/were dangerous from any set-piece around the box and we need to learn from that.

I hate when we get freekicks they are always wasted I know tansey has a good shot at them but maybe if he tried full power instead of a curler we would have a better chance!

Something does need to be done though and I have been saying that since way before butcher left!

Agree. But it was heart in mouth time when we conceded those free kicks on the edge of the area as you know the likes of Robson are normally very capable of punishing teams. When we get free kicks in dangerous areas it doesnt even raise any expectation levels in me.

With that one towards the end, who was the genius who decided on Doran to take it?  99 times out of 100 he skies the ball from outside the box and he's selfishness enough to do it every game.  That was a chance we could have run with as well.

I found dorans free kick quite funny if truth be known. We'd all being laughing a few mins earlier when robson or was it law ballooned one over then it was our turn and we all know what happened

It is a serious weekness.  We concede far more goals from free kicks than we score.  Unless there is someone in the side who can get the up and over or round the wall efforts on target and work the keeper with most attempts then the direct route seems pointless.  As PerfICT says, with players in the wall there should be players free to set up something else.  If nothing else, a tap kick to either side to someone to drill the ball goalwards (Shinnie with his left foot or Tansey with his right) has a lot more chance of success.  It changes the angle for the keeper and it means there is not a solid wall in front and gaps open up.  Even if the route to goal is not clear, there are good chances of deflections sending the keeper the wrong way.  And even with blocked shots there is a good chance of retaining possession or getting a corner.

Wanting a player to play in the game is one thing, but dead balls are another animal altogether.  Every week Doran cuts inside and shoots from range.  Every week the ball is ballooned skywards.  For Doran to take the ball and take that free-kick, knowing full well how poor he is from range and attempt to take the glory for himself was very selfish.

Rainbow is right about the negativity, I have been saying this since i joined the forum.

 

The usual suspects seem to glory in pulling the team to bits, don't despair Rainbow most of our posters are appreciative of what the team has achieved and what it is still capable of doing.

 

I think the malaise stems from the fact they never 'made it' themselves on the football pitch and feel they should have...................just a thought  

This is weakness from the manager. You decide on who takes the free-kick shots on goal, and you practice and practice from different positions until you can hit either corner.  It's all about discimpline and practice....

tansey isnt bad free kick taker. but if someone feels confident stepping up and taking one then let them take it. the playerswe have are good enough to put the ballin the back of the net from 25 yards, its just a matter of confidence imo.

I'd like to see a few taps to the side and straight drives at goal. Some of those attempts, from just outside the box as well, were woeful.

Even I could close my eyes and put if fairly close to goal and I've got a broken left peg.

I'm not convinced we do have players that are good at shooting from range.  Who's really got a good long shot on them?  Tansey does, Shinnie sometimes does and maybe Meekings.  That's about it really.  Ben Greenhalgh has a decent shot, but seems to have disappeared.  Doran shoots from range almost every week and every week the ball is ballooned towards the corner flag.  It was no surprise when the same happened on Sunday.

I wish that Doran had just put the ball in the box, it could have gone anywhere and maybe somebody could have stabbed it home. To punt it over the bar so wildly was just gutting, it was the last minutes of extra time, I was so sure it was our chance to nab it at the death!
