Taking the Thistle away

A view from the terrace tonight will show a piece about the newly formed Inverness Thistle FC who play in the North Caledonian league. In the trailer, they say “we wish ICT all the worst”…you can feel the seeth from them towards us!

They are asking for us to take the ‘Thistle’ out of ICT. For me, never. They are a diddy reformation of a club and the true soul of Inverness Thistle lies with this club, Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

But what do others think? I’d be interested to see how others feel about this. I used to love the banter on CTO between County, Elgin and ICT fans but we don’t have that many visitors nowadays. Maybe this thread will draw out a wee bit of interest…

Nah, they can bugger off! Let them muck about in the ' Caledonian league' 😄 whilst playing in Ross-Shire!

Wonder they didn't complain and ask for a change of league name!

There can be room for both, I bought one of their shirts a while back to show support. Shirt quality is pretty poor though to be honest. It’s stupidity if they are wanting our Thistle removed though. They don’t even play in Inverness so I hope they’ll be thinking about removing the Inverness from their name.

As you can tell by my name it was fairly obvious where my loyalties lay. I was brought up a few hundred yards from Kingsmills when I was younger and was a regular there in a Saturday and lucky enough to be there with the days of Ian Stephen. Johnny Cowie and all the usual culprits Tichie and Brian Black. Roshie. Davey Milroy etc.was at a few of the bigger games as well. Went down to park head when we got beat by Celtic also at Kilmarnock game and the much postponed Falkirk tie spent far too much money in the thistle club on baron Taylor’s lane. I’ve noticed on their online presence they have the odd pic with one of two of these lads in it. To me personally this is not and will never be the Jags I supported when I was younger. Just by using the name and colours does not make it so. I wish them well in their venture but not my Jags I’m afraid. Also it must really gaul them passing our stadium and going over the bridge to play their home games You could feel the seethe

I do know one local supporter who thinks it's the rebirth of Inverness Thistle and even drags his poor wife along to support them! Good luck to them, although I will not be checking how they are doing. It's bad enough with a few Jaggies behind me in the north stand lol wink

North Kessock Thistle. Sure they've got an initial buzz now off the old Thistle name but it remains to be seen what longevity they will have.

Quite a nice bunch I thought 😂

People going to be really upset when both Caledonian and Thistle are removed from our name 🤷‍♂️

It's just a near-local non-league team who have picked up a discarded team name.

Good luck to them, but to suggest they have any connection to the team who originally held the name is ridiculous.

The "Thistle" in Inverness Caledonian Thistle is an integral part of the club name, as obviously is Caledonian. Both come from the heritage of the two clubs that went through the merger process and are equally important in the name.

Taking the name of a club that, in its own right, ceased to exist 30+ years ago does not give them any rights to the previous heritage. It's just a publicity stunt and no more valid than asking Partick Thistle to remove "Thistle" from their name.

By "they" you are meaning one guy yeah? One man (who doesn't even sit on the committee) doesn't represent the whole Club! I was annoyed that AVFTT made it seem that he was involved with the club, but then maybe he never sepcified either.

The new Inverness Thistle FC committee are largely made up of people who weren't involved in the original club and some former supporters. The Club have frequently stated that they're not a continuation of the original club but instead are a new club who wish to respect the identity of the old. They are also on record wishing ICT the best. Again, one embittered fan doesn't represent a whole club!!

And you know what, I've actually been rather impressed at how professional they have been working behind the scenes. It really puts the likes of Morrison and Gardiner to further shame. ITFC have a clear strategy in place for the playing team going forward but also a mission plan for how they wish to serve the community in a positive way.

Surely the fact their existence allows for more young boys to aspire to a higher level of local football is a good thing? They are also hoping to create a football training programme for kids with ASN. So, Fair play to them. I wish them every success!

Also, I've been over to watch a couple games and was amazed at the level of support - there was a crowd of over 200 both times! Instead of castigating them, maybe ICT fans should actually be asking, what have we done wrong the past 31 years that 200 folk would rather follow this new team? What have we done to serve the community? Food for thought
