It's been a while since someone posted a nostalgia thread so here goes.

 

Over the years the club has had many players who never quite managed to establish themselves as regular first team starters, but still managed to endear themselves to the fans as cult heroes. Who would you put in this category?

 

To get the ball rolling -

 

Liam Keogh - Possibly the fastest player we ever had, persistently dogged by injuries, scored one of the most crucial goals in our history against Clyde in the first division title decider.

 

Dean McDonald - The original 'Deano', easily the smallest player ever on our books, but always got stuck in. Showed some promise in pre-season, but was rarely given a chance by Christie or Brewster. "If Deano scores, we're on the pitch." 

 

Marco De Barros - Much hyped 'star player' signed from Huntly, wowed fans with some dazzling skills and mazy runs, probably the most ball-greedy player to ever wear the shirt. Also the only other player previous to James Vincent who managed to pull off a successful Marseille turn.

 

Zander Sutherland - Another 'wee man' who dazzled the crowd with his trickery on the wing, tore County to shreds in a pre season friendly.

 

Roman Golobart - A colossus in the heart of defence, bravery beyond his years and not short on skill, but prone to the odd howler.

 

Dean McDonald didn't much game time because he was lazy, too slow, too fat and all round rubbish!  His plummet through the echelons of English football tells you all you need to know about him.  We've had poor players who had some at least some positive features (Lionel Djebi-Zadi was fast for example), but Dean 'Deano' McDonald must be the most talentless player we've ever had.

The fascination with Deano was incredible from the north stand. A lot of fans would rather watch him warm up than watch the actual game.

Was he really 'easily the smallest player ever on our books'? Even from the five players listed here, I'd have Zander as the smallest - but the memory can play tricks!

I remember that as well.  To quote the woman sat behind me that season "All he did was wave at us!".  He was absolutely useless and should never have been signed in the first place.

 

He must've been one of the slowest players we've ever had as well.

 

I'm sure as well, his wife/girlfriend was a poster on here for a while as well.  Her username was like "ICTGirl" or something and every post was about him and how fantastic he was!

As we're talking "Cult" status and not ability/achievement, then I think Dean McDonald is a fair shout based on the fact that he gained the popularity he did with fans.

 

We've had a few players over the years who, for whatever reason, have been fan favourites despite the fact they might have been found a little lacking in football skill.  On equal note, we've had a few great players who never managed to endear themselves to the fans and wouldn't find themselves included on any list of "cult" figures.

Martin Glancy would certainly be a cult figure. Never a great player but always a hard worker and got a few goals. He certainly endeared himself to the fans if I remember correctly.

Richard Hastings' free kick v Arbroath I think it was in a 4 or 5-1 win at Telford Street. He scored a beauty in that game from 25-30 yards out and the proceeded to take free kicks for seasons after without getting anywhere near. Although he was regarded for a while as a brilliant dead ball specialist.

I really, really, really liked Dani Sanchez. I know a lot of people thought he was a lightweight, but he had a great touch and eye for a pass. Didn't always suit the way Butcher wanted to play, but I think he would have fitted quite well into the current team, playing in behind Mckay.

There can be only one

"Few goals" being the key phrase! Think it was about 3 a season. But there was the song:

 

"There's only one Martin Glancy

He's small, but he's fancy

He scores with ease, so bring him on please

Walking in a Glancy wonderland"

 

The only factually accurate statement in that song was that he was small.  He wasn't fancy and he certainly didn't score with ease. Big waste of a transfer fee, think it was around £20,000.

Dani Sanchez and the hat he wore on title day.

A bit off topic I know but there are two players whom I think were wasted at ICT through a failure in coaching.

The first was Dougie Imrie now holding down a regular spot in a good Accies side. Fast, direct with a good engine and shot. Like so many quick players he tended to engage his feet before his brain,think a young kenny Miller and Mark Burchill. Imrie could have laid on so many goals for others but for the fact he never lifted his head. This can be coached but we never saw any improvement in the time he was at ICT. In my opinion a waste.

The second which used to drive me to despair was Ian Vigurs, always on the bench and as a result lacked confidence, a fine player with good touch, vision and a good passer in a team of hammer throwers, he was wasted at ICT and showed just what a good player he was in a County shirt where he was a guaranteed starter every week.

Hardly cult heroes I know but to me two players whose faults were never addressed and potential never realised at our club.

Should Nick Ross leave he'll always be a favourite/cult figure due to that late late late last minute equaliser at Hearts in the cup!

Not the most fashionable player by any means, but certainly played an important role in the early Pele years.

 

I recall a local cup final against County where he inexplicably transformed into Lionel Messi for 90 minutes and tore them to shreds. Probably the closest any Inverness player has ever come to a 10 out of 10 performance.

 

Juanjo for sheer entertainment and skill. Pity he didn't stay the course..? And that bust up with Neil Lennon--priceless.

Inverness Cup Final December 1995 at Grant Street. 5-2 I think it was and Daisy was most people's man of the match but that went to Iain Stewart for his hat trick.
