Celtic have banned a charity from selling poppies at Parkhead for Remembrance Sunday .

Now fund-raisers are hoping that hoops chairman John Reid - former defence Secretary - will overturn the ruling.

The ban follows protests by supporters who claim poppies are " hugely insensitive " to Irish fans.

The Poppy Appeal,with its 48 member charities,helps raise millions for war veterans injured in active service.

A charity insider said : " We've never been turned away by any of the big clubs and we find it shocking that Celtic would implement this ban " .

Our welfare work is a lifeline for thousands.We hope Mr Reid will reconsider ".

About 100 fans walked out of a match in 2008 when players wore poppies on their shirts.

But most of the 50,000 fans joined a one-minute round of applause to mark the anniversary of the end of WWI.

A Celtic spokesman said " We don't do collections in the grounds for anything "

Am I the only person who thinks that if you post something with loads of swearing and calling people all the names under the sun, it makes you look like a bit of an idiot?

There is a fair chance Im in the wrong but I always thought that although the Poppy is an emblem of a charity which collects for British war veterans, It also represents a token of acknowledgement of those injured and dead on all sides of War. Be they soldier or civilian.

Do the Green Brigade forget that many Celtic fans have war relations past and present? Do they no also know that soldiers don't pick and chose their wars. That is the politicians, who often needlessly and in some cases illegally send men to death.

If you don't agree with war I believe they still (not positive on this) produce white poppies which can be used to commerate the memory and show your contientious objection to war.

Dornoch Caley, If men did die during the two World Wars so that people could wear what they wanted (or not) without protest then is it not a little hypocritical of the Green Brigade to protest such? Im quite sure that many of the Celtic players, foreigners included, have no problem wearing a poppy on their top and a good few are probably proud to.

The Green Brigade have made statement after Statement regarding the poppies yet why is it, it never gets released by the press? In short, they say people have FREEDOM to wear the poppy if they like. I wonder if it escaped Dornochcaleys notice that we had the poppy emblem on our shirts on Saturday and I didn't here any of our Irish contingent complaining about wearing them. I noticed that Celtic didn't wear there hoops yesterday but wore there away strip for some reason , I wonder if it was to appease the green brigade as they didn't want poppies on the hoops ?

This is just my thoughts on it and am not looking for conflict,

Celtic play in the UK and have links to the Republic, because of the sacrifices made by our service men/Ladies and those from other lands, We/Them/Us have the rights to talk as they do, think as we do and act like they do, also they need to remember that its a Scottish Club not an Republic Club so again they should at least acknowledge the sacrifices made so they can be the way they are. I didn?t like the way the poppies and the likes were burn and the 2 min silence was not observed by some Immigrants in our country and I kind of feel the same way towards those ?Scottish? Celtic fans that are being the way they are..

Also fair play to our Republic players for showing respect and not getting caught up in all the ?turmoil?

I payed my respects yesterday as i always do - by raising a dram to Willie McBride. In contrast to the tabloid driven worship of the "heroes who fight for our freedom" (and consequent support of those wars) that has characterised much of this past couple of weeks, the song pays tribute to the dead soldier but laments the futility of the war which killed him.

The display by the Green Ultras may he have been crude, but i think it's been positive to have voices of dissent during a period that has increasingly become a commercialised "month-long drum-roll of support for current wars", as a group of veterans expressed it in a letter to the Guardian last week. The letter ends like this:

"The public are being urged to wear a poppy in support of "our Heroes". There is nothing heroic about being blown up in a vehicle. There is nothing heroic about being shot in an ambush and there is nothing heroic about fighting in an unnecessary conflict. Remembrance should be marked with the sentiment "Never Again".

To be honest I am sickened with the anti-poppy sentiment shown by some on here, it is a matter of pride that we have a military who execute their duties without question. It is a matter of duty that we honour those who fell to defend our freedom. Whatever your political views the military in this country are not political, they defend each and every one of us.

I am generally a very tolerant person but would gladly round up all those who aren't as tolerant as myself and send them to clear IEDs in Afghanistan with a hammer.

My initial reaction to Stan's post was disappointment,. but I've read it several times now and....

He, and the group of veterans he refers to, are right, although I wouldn't agree that WW1 and WW2 were "unnecessary conflicts"

My fervent hope is that someday in my lifetime, Tony Blair and George W Bush will be called to account for all those who have been killed or maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan and ordered to stand trial for war crimes.

I have to say....when you think about it, i have to agree. Thats not to say i dont respect the job our lads are doing over there, but...the wars nowadays arent fought for the greater good....I firmly believe the whole afghnistan thing is about oil and resources and general greed, using the "war against terror" as a cover story, the poor soldiers are mere pawns

The only person talking sense on this thread. Wars are not computer games and should be remembered with sorrow and regret and the commitment to never let them happen again.
