Montrose @ home March2026

Home Run

We embark on a run of three home games on the trot starting with Montrose on Saturday followed by Cove next week then a midweek visit from Peterhead before a tough test at form side Alloa. Not quite the seven away fixtures we endured either side of New Year, but a welcome break nonetheless, and maybe just at the right time after a disappointing performance and result at Kelty last weekend. Stenhousemuir joined us at the top of the table after beating Accies 1-0 in midweek. No room for errors now as we enter matchday 28.

Faltering form over the last six League1 games starting with a win at Alloa (3-1). A hard fought draw at Palmerston next where we led twice before being pegged back in a quality 2-2 draw. We beat East Fife comfortably 3-0 and followed that with our BBC Alba extravaganza at Broadwood (0-1). The next League game was that tough 1-1 draw with Stenny when we had Ben Brannan sent off with 20m left. On the Tuesday after we beat Ayr Utd 1-2 to progress into the KDM Trophy Final. A disappointing no scoring draw at Kelty last week where we struggled to create enough clear chances has allowed the pack to close in again. That all adds up to 12 points in the last six outings for the Caley Jags, the same as Stenhousemuir but one less than form team Alloa.

Six games ago Montrose drew 1-1 with Peterhead then 2-2 with Stenny. The solitary defeat was inflicted at Cove as Montrose went down 3-1. The win was a great result, 3-2 over QotS followed by a 1-1 draw at Accies. Last time out in midweek was the 1-1 draw with Kelty Hearts. That's 7 points over the last six games.

Jambos loanee Callum Sandilands is one to watch. Back for his second season at Links Park, Callum has bagged 8 goals this season from his attacking midfield position. He made 18 appearances for Montrose scoring three times last season and is making an even bigger impact this season.

Taylor Sutherland is next best goal getter with five to his name.

Montrose are having a decent season sitting just outside the promotion play-off positions. At times this season they have produced runs as good as any in the division but inconsistency has kept them on the fringes. That being said, we have never really found the Gable Endies an easy side to get the better of, instead we just seem to plod on doing things the Caley Jags way.

Well here's hoping Kell has had the players working on accurate shooting practice all week! We certainly don't want stats like 23 shots 11 on target and no goals! Tomorrow is a must win game, And hopefully Queens get a result down in Dumfries.

Understand your point cC but I don’t consider this a do or die game. There is 30 points still up for grabs and we have the players (I think - hope) can get the bulk of them.

If it sends the message some fans (out with the happy clappy), to the players and manager as a wake-up call that they underperformed in the last two league games then that gets my support!

Stenny, Alloa and QoTS will take points of each other I suspect so that helps along the way. They also make the run-in more Interesting and exiting IMO.

Get your point Cherly, But if we dont get 3 points, Stenny win at Queens ( which they are more than capable of) they will knock us off top, This is a big moral boost for them and a brain rattle for ICT!

However, we win, Stenny draw and its lift for ICT and us fans!

Today's Player of the Match Presentation will take in Bar 94 after full time.

If you are able to, we are sure the players will appreciate a big crowd in the bar to see the presentation.

There is then the bus at 1800 back to town.

Felt at one point Stenny just weren’t going away. Still a good result for them away from home so nice to see we finally wrapped it up late.

Well done lads, good win. Sounds like the late goal made it comfortable.

Altogether a very satisfying afternoon , what with Scotland duffing up France as well

Onwards and upwards

We made hard work of breaking Montrose down from 25 yards to their keeper. He made two or three really good saves, but we probably should put four or five past them without needing the late goals. Always on edge until we got the third. Might have been less tense had the fans been playing the game, but it was a bit edgy sitting in the stand. Not sure we should have been conceding a penalty but we got there in the end.

Jordan Alonge deserving of his MotM when others around him generally made a hash of things.

Bit of a strange game. We dominated for large parts but we were poor in defence and midfield with wages too many mistakes being made. Passing was really poor at times especially from Chalmers. The midfield of Chalnets, Stewart and Allen just doesn't work and, personally, I think Chalmers slows the game down far too much. He always seems to play with his back to the opposition goal.

Anyway. A wins a win so onwards and upwards. Referee was poor again today, hugely inconsistent in his decisions. Montrose player looked offside for the penalty so why linesman didn't flag is a mystery.

Today could turn out to be a massive day in the title race.

From looking like we’d end up two points behind Stenny to end up two ahead with a game in hand must give the squad confidence and momentum.

I thought we played some good stuff in the first half but the Montrose goalkeeper pulled off several saves to keep the score down.

I need to see it but am sure the Montrose break that led to the penalty should have been pulled up for offside but I may be wrong.

The substitutions made a difference, with the pass from Wotherspoon to Macleod in the build up to the second goal being immense. Longstaff also made a difference.

Credit to Kell for hooking Brannon at half time to save him from the risk of getting another booking.

It was very nervy until Alonge’s calm finish for the third. He was deservedly the Man of the Match and Billy Mckay described him as the coolest guy in Scotland during the post match interviews in Bar 94.

Maybe not pretty at times in the second half, but job done.

In hindsight, the Montrose pass for their penalty was actually on side. Again in hindsight and with the benefit of digital evidence, bringing the player down was not a wise move.

The pass from Wotherspoon that lead to our second goal was amazingly precise.

Three points is three points. Finishing with 11 players is also very important although I noticed one team yesterday managed a draw with 9 men at the end!

Here's the exact moment at which the ball is played. In the next frame the ball has moved forward and the Montrose forward has run past Savage. I think we have to give them the benefit of the doubt!

Looks like the linesman was spot on šŸ‘

Possible a crucial weekend of results, reclaiming daylight between us and Stenny, with a game in hand, and, as important, increasing our goal difference advantage over them (because you never know!)...Saturday 11th April has Championship decider/cliff-hanger written all over it

Great anticipation by Billy for the first goal

Not sure Munro had to rush out for their penalty (although from his view, he probably felt different and was only marginally too late)

Great work for the 2nd goal all round including Alfie keeping up his record of scoring from less than 6 yards out (which I keep saying is an important skill)

As for Alonge's goal, I have seen so many players fluff 'open goals', the fact that he didn't from his angle was super cool.

_________

Meanwhile down South, Palace have stabilised their season and re-found their spirit and modus-operandi, whilst I attended my local National League side Sutton FC's game ....they were 4 Nil down and down to 10men by the 26th minute!...first time I have ever left a game at half-time!
