I don't think Butcher would see it this way. Given our club captain was a bit wild in his young days and was rehab'ed by Butcher and his loan signing of Philip Morris when nobody else would touch him due to the fact i've heard he had previous for assaulting a bouncer in Edinburgh casino. I think Butcher would have given the lad a chance....

What I was alluding to was not really about his history - if ICT asked him to rest then he is simply disobeying orders and taking the pissh - if he has carried on like that over the years then no wonder he has fallen from grace and is injury prone to boot.

Think its slightly harsh to question his dicipline based on this. He is unemployed just now and has been asked to rest for a few weeks in the hope he may be offered a contract. If they wanted him, they would offer him one anyway and then tell him to rest. He got the chance to go for a trial elsewhere and took it.

If anyone else outside of football was in the same boat, and was told to wait 3 weeks in hope, or was offered an interview elsewhere straight away, they would do the same thing. If we are not going to offer him a deal just now, then he's quite right to try and get himself sorted elsewhere in the meantime.

How can you offer somebody a contract when they are not fit and have a history of being injury prone - and if he has been medically advised to rest then he is playing on with an injury and will end up with no job whatsoever. He may well be trying to sort out a job but he is going the wrong way about it.

Put it another way - could he just have said "No Thanks" to us instead of playing for another team when there is a sort of deal on the table ?

Such behaviour can only enhance his reputation as well !!

As far as I have heard, he was told it was a minor pull with only a few days rest required, but ICT wanted him to rest for a few weeks. I understand the club want to make sure he is fully fit before signing him and that is their choice, but it is his choice to look elsewhere if he feels that is best for him. I may be just me but I fail to see how it gives him, or enhances any sort of reputation. He has had a difficult choice, do nothing for a few weeks and maybe get a contract, or accept a trial elsewhere and maybe get a contract. If anything he seems to have gotten through 2 games now for MK Dons uninjured, and is getting to keep working on his fitness, so from that point of view it was maybe the right choice, only time will tell though.

I'd imagine most of us would go along to the HSBC interview. If the Royal Bank then come back and want to sign you. Fine. If HSBC do. Fine. You've got no allegiance to either bank, so why would you turn down HSBC on the basis of a mere second interview with absolutely no guarantee of a job?

If I was Tel and had concerns about his fitness, I'd get him back in 3 weeks time, if still available, and assess the seriousness of the injury. I certainly wouldn't expect Gilbert to wait around, turning down clubs that don't seem to believe the injury is as serious as ICT do. Perhaps we're just being over-cautious. Perhaps they're being too cavalier. Either way, I don't think the full-back's too blame in trying to get a job with a club that feels his injury is minor. Gilbert is tarnishing our reputation and others will do likewise - feck me - Billy Mckay trained for us fer 10 minutes, suffered an injury and was training with Wimbledon by early afternoon.

If I was him and could get two similar deals (not that I know that) I'd go for the one that cost me less time (less travelling) and got me more exposure.

I worked, i.e. slaved, for the Royal Bank of Scotland for 19 years and when they would not promote me to a position which I deserved on merit and accomplishments, telling me politely that I had to wait for dead mens' shoes, I accepted an offer to join the Toronto Dominion Bank who were willing to pay my moving costs, hotel for one month, help with a car loan and a mortgage for a home shortly afterwards --and never looked back. Of course there were hiccups on the road up the ladder of advancement subsequently, in both the TD and in other employment, but on balance the freedom of choice and movement between ANY career or profession that Canada offers was well worth it .

And the experience of emigrating and succeeding in the face of oten very difficult obstacles was both challenging and satisfying.

So you cannot stand in the way of anyone trying to better themselves so long as they have met their contractual obligations. Football can also be a short enough career and what happens to a washed-up player --does the club pay him a lifetime pension thereafter. VERY unlikely.

For Duff I daresay it is not about loyalty since he is no longer contracted to ICT ...correct? So where is the beef? If he takes the chance on losing a job with ICT who is the one to suffer anyway --certainly not ICT . So why don't we just wait and see and wish him well--it cannot be easy being ouit of work as a footballer. It's sh..te in any other jopb I can assure you, especially if you have mouths at home to feed.

The article says that Gilbert was brought up here, flights and accomodation paid for. He played against Clach and picked up a calf strain. He was assessed by physios and sent for an MRI scan at the cost of ICT, the news came back that he would need 3 weeks of rehab and could be back playing in 4-5 weeks. Butcher was still keen and said he would wait however the next thing he knew Gilbert had returned south and was playing in a trial for a team down south. Interest in the player promptly ceased

I don't understand how he can be a prat for wanting to find a job at this moment. A club in England might be a better option for him anyway, the trial up here might not have been to his liking. Just because he hasn't chosen ict doesn't make him a prat.

Im sure he does want a job but the fact is the club were really keen to get him, payed for his MRI and did their best to persuade him to come North which he seemed happy to do. Gilbert didnt even tell the club he was going back down to MK. Wether he was fit to play or not is really beside the point. The fact is he showed us disprespect by doing what he did. Had he said he was going to play for MK then it would have been dissapointing but acceptable.

From his point of view though he will say that he never asked ICT to do all that for him, most clubs tbh would have just ceased their interest in the player when he got injured to save some money and focus on other targets. I guess by doing all they did they were trying to show him what sort of a club they are and how they look after their players which would stand out more as he wasn't even contracted, however meaning he can do what he wants.

Yes maybe not the smartest thing to do but again goes right back to how much did the player want to come to us anyway. He may well have been a good player for us, we'll never know, but I would rather have players playing for us who want to be here rather than feel they had no where else to go or no better options.

May have been desperate to get a contract but he blew it big style to go on trial somewhere else that didn't work out and now he is at another club. Maybe if he had taken the advice he would be signing at the end of the week!!
