Home tie v a Broomhill, team we’ve never played before. Weekend of 20 January.3 points
-
I disagree. Whilst that approach would be more likely to ensure a comfortable win, it doesn't really tell the manager much. If there are players who are fighting for a starting place, you need to put them under a bit of pressure and challenge them to get the game won. You learn little about players if you stick them on when somebody else has already done the hard work. If the game is already safe, then it is a good time to bring on a youngster or two to get experience or players returning from injury who just need a bit of game time. I think Dunc got it about right with the starting line up and substitutions. He was let down by several players who can do much better than they showed yesterday. I expect the same sort of team selection against Broomhill in January, but a much improved performance.3 points

Called it, more or less Don’t like missing ICT in the cup but sounded like a good one to miss. Stayed local, a few pints in the Guildford then took in Dick Campbell’s final game as Spartans knocked out a woeful Arbroath. Demos by the fans at the end and Dick has fallen on his, ehhh, bunnet. Bring on the Rovers.3 points

That was a very hard watch on a very cold day, with very little for the supporters to get excited about. I couldn't believe how pedestrian we were for most of that game, I thought we would have come charging out of the blocks and the fringe players would all be up for impressing big Dunc. Instead we played slow safe passes across the back four and back again, unless the pass to the keeper was not on. If Ferguson was wanting to see what the squad players can do, he will have found out that they are not going to worry the guys currently in the first eleven, especially the front two, who were toothless all the time they were on. Sheridan had two great chances to score, but took far too long to try and get a shot off, and the chances were gone. It was only when the subs were introduced that we looked like we'd do something, and we did. In my humble opinion, I thought we could have started with our best team, try and score a couple of goals, and then take the fringe playes on. I know that Cowdenbeath didn't have a shot on goal, but it could have just taken a slip at a corner, before the subs, and we might have been chasing a goal to save embarrassment. The next round will be interesting. I am of the opinion that I would always want to lowest ranked team in the draw, while others might want one of the big hitters. Whoever we get, we will have to play our strongest team, to make sure we have the best chance of getting through.3 points

There's good argument for both approaches. The one used is higher risk, but gave better return in terms of game time and a proper look at fringe players. The cost was entertainment value. I'm sure Ferguson expected a bit more from the starting lineup and didn't intend to be relying on subs to win it, but he'll now have a better understanding of what he's working with.2 points

Goalden Oldies Inverness scraped their way into the hat for the fourth round draw with a less than impressive display against fifth tier Cowdenbeath. It was only after the introduction of olde heads Wotherspoon, Mckay and Carson that we took control of the game in the final ten minutes. Spoony and Mckay got the late strikes to win this tie over a hard working Cowdenbeath who can be well pleased with their performance as they shut Inverness down all over the park for eighty minutes. In truth, the mascots looked more impressive in the warm up than the Caley Jags strikers as they scored goals like a boss. Robert on CTO: That was a hard watch. Cowdenbeath more than matched us until the triple change. Ferguson will have learn’t a lot about some players. Two great goals put an artificial gloss on a poor performance. I’ll cut Welsh some slack as he is still building up fitness after so little game time, and he made one magnificent cross field pass to Shaw. Delaney and Sheridan were the worst of the bunch, with most players guilty of slack passing and poor control in general. It could have been different if our two early chances had gone in, one cleared off the line and one resulting in a good save. However, we didn’t kick on at all, reverting to square and backwards passing with little movement or threat. When we got scoring chances, we tended to pass rather than shoot when a shooting opportunity was on. After the break, Brooks had a tame effort and Sheridan should have had two easy goals but messed up the opportunities. Thank goodness we stepped up several gears when Mckay and Wotherspoon came on. We need to get Wotherspoon tied up for longer. Of the starting eleven, I’m struggling as to who get pass marks. Maybe Shaw and Ujdur but that would be about it. Brooks and Longstaff worked very hard but without damaging Cowdenbeath. FULL TIME: 2-0 More detail to follow>>> Cup ties are all about getting into the next round and that's what Inverness did....just. Unlike Dundee United and Arbroath, who have parted company with Dick & Dom. Not an impressive performance by any means, but Big Dunc will have learnt that some of these players need to move on in January. We had made half a dozen changes to the normal Championship team lines but I'm struggling to find many positives from that. No surprise that we looked much better when Mckay, Wotherspoon and Carson entered the game. A couple of flashes of brilliance and it was game over. Well done to Cowdenbeath who got their game plan right and snapped at our heels all afternoon making life difficult for us as we tried to break them down but failed badly. Sheridan looks off the pace but still had a couple of opportunities to score, something he would have done with his eyes shut a number of years ago. Brooks runs around like a headless chicken without threatening. Misplaced passes all over the park today, but one man not guilty of that was the impeccable Nikola Ujdur who was my MotM. His nearest rivals only played for the final ten minutes, Mckay and Wotherspoon and after that the mascots Ava and Rio were head and shoulders above the rest of the squad. Dunc's happy enough, that's good enough for me Date: 25/11/2023 Venue: Caledonian Stadium Attendance: 1037 Referee: Graham Grainger Inverness CT: 2 Manager: Duncan Ferguson Lineup: C Mackay; Duffy (Carson 70), Ujdur, Devine, Delaney, Longstaff (Lodovica 90+1), Welsh (Davidson 89), Gilmour, Brooks (Wotherspoon 71), Shaw, Sheridan (Mckay 70) Subs (not used): Ridgers; Harper, Hyde, Thompson Scorers: Wotherspoon (80), B Mckay (84) Booked: none Sent Off: none Cowdenbeath: 0 Manager: Calum Elliot Lineup: Hepburn; MacPherson, McNab, Jordan, Tait, McLaughlin (Chalmers 77), Docherty, McDonald (MacDonald (77)), Butterworth, Jack (Berry 54), MacPherson (Cunningham 77) Subs (not used): Blair; Walker Scorers: none Booked: Docherty (34), Tait (90) Sent Off: none a2 points

Rather than slagging us off I am going to give some praise to Blue Brazil, the wee guys they had bossed us for a while and outlasted us. But quality finishes won the tie.2 points

I agree with others that was more difficult than expected probably due to a number of factors; not least of which was a fairly disjointed performance. Without the introduction of Wotherspoon and McKay it had nil nil written all over it; got to be a worry that However still unbeaten under Dunc and in the draw for the next round. I would imagine the upcoming game against Raith will provide a better barometer of the current status. So not overly concerned but maybe a reminder that there is still a lot of work to do. Let’s hope we get a good support to get behind the team for the Raith game. Winning that game would do a lot of good for everyone2 points

These are valid questions that should be put to the board et al who are waxing lyrical about how important the project is for "net zero" and the future security of the club. Some meaningful and quantifiable substance behind their green and financial sound bites would be helpful.2 points

Could anyone fill in exactly how this Battery Farm plan will operate? Who will manage and operate the facility on a day to day basis? Who will physically oversee construction? Who will ensure that there is a market? Where is the set-up capital coming from? In practical terms, what is the nature of the link between the football club and ILI? What’s in it for ILI? When would funds be expected to arrive with the club? What does the club have to do in order to qualify for revenue from this facility? What are the projected profits? What’s the level of risk? If there are losses, who is liable and what would the implications be for the football club? These are not hostile questions in any way. It’s just that, as a shareholder in ITandCFC, developments over the last week have led me to realise that I know very little about this project, which it’s hoped will revolutionise the football club’s finances.2 points

They are currently higher up the Lowland League than Cowdenbeath but never forget Darvel. At least we have two months to watch them and check if all their players are eligible.1 point

In all seriousness though this is a tie we should win comfortably. By late January we should be a settled squad with the likes of Sheridan and some others long gone. Hopefully this is an incentive for Wotherspoon to see a possible cup run opportunity and have him sign up at least until the the end of this season.1 point

What chance Ross County at home in the next round? Probably an easier tie than Buckie or Brora away.1 point
-
I agree, but it did seem a strange one. I think Mckay has handled being captain well but Devine had one of his poorer games today, particularly a 10 minute spell in the first half when he kept giving away possession. Anyway, job done (albeit in a very unconvincing manner) and we are in the last 32, unlike Dundee United, Dunfermline, Queens Park and manager-less Arbroath. At least we will be saved Dick and Ian Campbell’s antics when we play Arbroath next month.1 point
-
The positives today are that we got to rest some first team players, give game time to fringe players, and most importantly, we are in tomorrow night’s draw. Dundee Utd aren’t and nor are Arbroath. Dick Campbell gone after 7 years (feels like he’s been there forever!). Wonder if Dodds or Robbo will be interested in that vacancy?1 point
-
I woke up at half time and had been dreaming Billy Dodds was back then I heard that someone had a coupon on for us to win 8 - 0 it was a strange afternoon with the last ten minutes seeing good football and us scoring two good goals. At least we are through to the next round and Big Dunc will know who to play next week!1 point

Bet harsh on Welsh he has spent a long time injured this season. Delaney has no excuse apart from match sharpness so totally agree with you on that1 point

I think it's clear after today our sqaud depth is poor if we have too many first team injuries this season we will struggle..1 point

3 hours since that game ended and I am still shocked by that performance. These last few weeks everyone has been upbeat, but that today was like back in the Dodds era.Every player was poor in first half. The midfield were poor I thought for the 70 minutes and im afraid Sheridan has to hang up his boots. At least Dunc will have a good idea who needs to move on in January. Concerning, that after our first 11,these are the next line. Welsh was also very poor.1 point

Wow that was awful. One of the worst games I've ever suffered. If that's supposed to be an improvement on Doddsball, I don't agree.1 point
-
Yep, dire stuff for most of the game with fringe players showing why they are such. Fortunately for us Cowden were pretty toothless, But wait a mo... so were ICT! Jeez it was a hard watch, Shortknob played so many passes straight back into defence or even Mackay in goal. Delaney looked rusty, very rusty and I still don't rate Duffy very much. Our front two Brooks and Sheriden had so little to work with, with mostly shocking passing from our midfield, that God we had some quality to enter the fray and get the win with 2 great goals.1 point
-
Showed them too much respect for 75-80 minutes. They were so bad I can't believe we persevered with such a pedestrian pass it around and across the back for so long. Tempo never got high enough to trouble them and we failed to create enough clear chances. Felt sorry for Brooks in the first half as he was holding his line for runs so many times but the pass always went back or sideways. Despite changes throughout the side I felt that midfield suffered the most.1 point
-
STFU sums it up well. The person I feel sorry for is Harry Lodovica if the manager thinks Sheridan is a better starting option than him. Sheridan was dreadful and makes Andy Barrowman (remember him?) seem like a club legend in comparison. But it was poor all round. I can't remember ever seeing so many misplaced passes. At times it seemed the ball was only passed forwards when the pass back looked too risky. It was absolutely dire. Thank goodness for Wotherspoon and Mckay who showed touches of real quality late on to give us a win we didn't deserve.1 point

On June 13th the Club posted a lengthy "CEO Update" which included the following paragraph. "Infrastructure improvements at the Stadium have been identified and exciting new commercial contracts have been progressed, some to be announced in the coming days including our technical kit partner and main jersey sponsor/partner and subject to legal agreements in the coming weeks, we hope to have important news about the Stadium and its environs." To be best of my knowledge, no important news has emerged. Click here for the full statement.1 point

I know you are just trying to defend the club, and that's admiral to a point, but I'm afraid you are wrong/misinformed on much of what you have said on this thread. Read it back in full and you'll see that there's information and links on things like business and resident objections to the Battery Storage unit, as well as independent consultations that state the application doesn't meet the criteria and the club not taking advantage of pre application advice which would have highlighted issues and allowed them to consider them before proceeding. The concert company stuff is covered above. The CEO told us the green port was going to be huge for the club, but now the chairman is saying he can see no way it will benefit us at all. This is not a case of giving a pat on the back and saying they tried their best, everything above is riddled with evidence of mismanagement and incompetence.1 point
-
So the tenant rebranded their entire business around the landlord? The Inverness Caley Thistle Concert Company Limited with a registered office at Caledonian Stadium and the listed director being the club chairman, Morrison, was mismanaged into liquidation by Gardiner and Morrison. Yet you seem cold on anyone putting their thinking caps on and questioning the same gents on their latest, non football related, bright idea.1 point
-
Sorry, Charles. Can't help you out on any of this. Have you tried emailing the SLO?1 point
-
The recommendation to take pre application advice from the planners was not taken up by ILI/ICTFC. Naive, arrogant or both? Having watched the meeting, I'm not convinced the decision will end up going in favour of the club. When all is said and done, the application is to put an industrial operation on a protected open green site and all the noise mitigation and camouflage in the world isn't going to change that. A decision to allow it regardless isn't a precedent that council will want to set unless there's wider reaching benefit which can also be placed as a condition on future applications of a similar nature. A friendly councillor has managed to kick the can down the road by asking for the deferment, even if he also made it obvious that was primarily to buy time for ILI/ICTFC and not so much for the stated site visit.1 point
-
Everyone will just have to hope that these difficulties are not “terminal”.1 point
-
I'm just shocked we haven't greased the wheels of progress with a good old bung. Sorry, 'developer contribution', as they are known in the building industry when re-zoning or deferring on affordable housing is required. Whatever happened to the playing fields and playpark on Balloan Road... ...certainly wasn't zoned for residential development, but that has all but disappeared under new housing because council owned land can be used for profiteering, apparently.1 point
-
My point was that we have to at least consider objectively questioning the bold, yet somewhat amateur (see youtube video), claims from Gardiner and Morrison about this project and how it finances the club. They had their finger prints all over the mismanagement of the concert debacle and were excited puppies about the free port. They have chipped away at their own credibility.1 point
-
Hmmm no, that's not what I said. I am pointing out that it was perfectly reasonable for the council planners to reject this despite the frantic and desperate last minute club lobbying with sound bites about the equivalent of planting one million trees and existential financial threats. I can step back if you prefer an echo chamber where everyone's shouting "council neanderthals, caley directors good guys". To answer your other new points: has anyone even seen credible financials that would backup the claims this will save the future of the club? Like the concerts and free ports? It's not guaranteed to be clean or renewable energy that these batteries will store (and they are toxic as f*ck and hugely energy intensive to mine/make). Again, labouring the point, it maybe a field but it is part of protected green space that is surrounded by residential, office, and leisure - this is an indisputable fact. Lastly, it is not going off on a tangent to question the attempts to find other sites - it was raised by @Stephen Malkmus so I responded. The document is weak IMHO and the planners effectively called it out as such.1 point
-
I suspect the planners didn't find that very convincing: "We asked the minister for his land, he said thou shalt not. So we looked at a wee ground switcheroo for some allotments with the church land and the minister said thou shalt not. Tulloch were already milking the arse out of the other land around the GSP and we.... sorry they.... said the land was unavailable..... so what else could we do except choose Fairways".1 point
-
Other than the mahoosive housing estate you reference, the planners and council have also rejected at least one other planning application for small scale housing and chalet developments at this site for the same reasons. I think you are missing the scale of this thing. 1.7 hectares is a big chunk of land being turned to heavy industrial use in a predominantly residential area.1 point
-
As the planners said today, it has to be "the right development in the right place" and they challenged the applicants to prove they considered, and ruled out, other sites first. I bet they didn't - they have probably just tried to use this land because David Cameron already owns it.1 point
-
It's protected green space as per the well published Inner Moray Firth Development Plan, that, ya know..... folk considered as intelligent land investors might be aware of. That means it is protected from development and why all attempts to build houses here has always been rejected. I don't see it as "Neanderthalic" for the planners to point this out - they are doing their job.1 point
-
The councillors certainly sounded like they had been buttered up. I noticed the burning eyes of the ICT board sitting in the gallery punching their palms to apply some final pressure on them to relent. Amongst other things, the planners rightly pointed to the proposed category of usage being industrial (not compatible with surroundings) and the site being designated green open space as part of IMLDP2. The councillors were fishing for the category to be "softened" for this case and for a site visit to see the impact on the green space in-situ. One councillor was hilariously trying to describe the aesthetics as looking like a golf course maintenance shed - I have never seen a golf course with 3m high sheds and a footprint of a modern football stadium.1 point
-
Good post from Stephen. I pretty much agree with that assessment. It strikes me as strange that we have got to this stage and the Club are surprised at the Council planners recommending refusal. I also would have expected that ILI would have had pre-application discussions with the Council which would either have led them to revising plans so that they satisfy the planners concerns, or to prepare a case as to why they disagree with the planners. The objections do, however, seem very minor and one would have thought could easily be overcome with conditions attached to an approval. I'm not sure that Ross Morrison's belated lobbying is going to help or hinder the case. There is no doubting that a technology that makes a significant contribution to meeting net zero targets is to be welcomed and obviously having a steady and significant income stream coming into the Club would be great. But the merits of the development (which are considerable) should be irrelevant with the decision being made solely in compliance with planning policy and regulations. If I were a Councillor on the Planning Committee, I don't think I would take too kindly to have my mail box full of pleas to ignore the advice of the professional planners because of the perceived benefits. It certainly won't help the relationship between the Club and the Planning department. It's a bit like having a goal being ruled offside and arguing with the referee that it should be awarded in spite of it maybe being marginally offside, because it was a good move and deserved a goal. I agree that the planners are probably most concerned about the loss of open space. Again, one can understand that the project only impinges on a tiny proportion of the open space in and around the city. However, if a precedent is set with this, the Council might find themselves under significant pressure to allow other projects on designated open space. For the sake of the Club and all the good community work the Club does, I sincerely hope the project does get passed. If it doesn't, I won't be too surprised. If it doesn't, someone at the club will have some explaining to do.1 point
-
Just because a lot of effort has gone into it, and some mitigations have been added belatedly, does not mean the council should approve it - even on appeal. They have been trying to whore off bits of the golf course for years and have always failed. This latest attempt is not a routine planning application. I find it staggering that the club, and others, seem surprised they have met understandable resistance.1 point
-
So where would this leave the club if the Battery Farm, like the Concert Company, were to go bust? In the case of the Concert Company, the technically separate football club took a large sum for stadium rent before the CC went bust, leaving local traders out of pocket. There is therefore also the concern that the CC’s demise left a lot of bad feeling among the Inverness business community. So what’s the situation in the event of the collapse of the Battery Farm? Also, how much vehicular traffic would a Battery Farm create, and might this, on the already extremely congested SDR, have been a consideration when planning permission was refused?1 point
-
With the club coming out strong last week, and the weekend missive from the chairman urging all fans to contact their local councilors, I can't help feeling that all our eggs are in this one basket. That scares me a lot.1 point
