The total (back then before we tweaked it to ignore them) would have included search engine spiders so if we published a story or two that day or there was a lot of forum activity then its possible that it was crawled by multiple search engines at the same time and if they do a full site crawl there can be many instances.

right now we have 122 people on the site and that is about the average at any one time other than after a big game or big bit of news. I have seen it as high as 400 on occasions when I have looked so if you said 650 real users and 650 crawl bots I would find that more believable.
