Hi gang...is there any software out there that can detect muliple files of the same name / duplicate files. On my work laptop I have got over 1500 files and I'm sure most are duplicates. Is there an easy way of sorting them out. They are located on differant drives too so would this cause a problem? Cheers in advance.

we use beyond compare at work - its more of a sync / directory comparison tool rather than a duplicate detector .... Its a bit more manual work to use it as a duplicate detector than some programs, but I swear by it.

I tend to use CNET (amongst others) for freeware / shareware needs and it throws up the following

Duplicate File Detector 4.7 : Free Trial / $29 to buy - http://download.cnet.com/Duplicate-File-De...4-10592939.html

Clone spy (5* rating) : Freeware - http://download.cnet.com/CloneSpy/3000-2248_4-10061675.html

Duplicate Cleaner (4.5* rating): Freeware - http://download.cnet.com/Duplicate-Cleaner...4-10584403.html

Easy Duplicate Finder (4.5* rating): Freeware - http://download.cnet.com/Easy-Duplicate-Fi...4-10692636.html

***NOTE*** All of these files indicate you should be very careful when deleting files, make sure they are true duplicates before doing so.

Thanks a lot Scotty. I will give some of these a try. I intend to copy all my files onto a seperate USB stick first and than have a play. This will prevent deleting important files in error....i hope.

I'll need to have a dig through some of the stuff I did when I was working for the bank as I did something in excel that would pull file names and sizes from multiple directories and flag up duplicates.
