That's so funny! I assume (and hope) these as genuine and not photo-shopped!

There was an old Countdown back in the day when Bamber Richard Whitely presented it and both contestants bravely offered 'wankers' as their word!

After dictionary corner confirmed it 'acceptable', Whitely said something like 'well, we've got a couple of wankers here'!!!

According to a friend of mine who worked behind the scenes on the show in those days, there was only 1 wanker on Countdown back then.

Apparently it is London rhyming slang - Merchant Banker, reduced in the London East end to a simple Merchants.

If someone is called a Merchant in London out of Context It is taken to being called a W****r
