Opening games of the season

Just reading on PieandBovril and noticed this...

The full set of new SPL fixtures will be released in 2 weeks time, however the opening day fixtures have been sent off to the ESPN and Sky well in advance. (so they can choose which matches to broadcast live), so here are the opening SPL fixtures of season 2010/11, I got this information from a friend who works at Sky.

Dundee United v Kilmarnock

Hamilton Academical v Celtic

Heart of Midlothian v Aberdeen

Inverness CT v Motherwell

Rangers v Hibernian

St Mirren v St Johnstone

Seems quite plausible... :)

So Rangers v Hibs for the TV match eh? Brilliant....

It's not likely to be the Rangers match as ESPN/SKY are only allowed to show a certain amount of games from a Scottish stadium each season. They tend to keep the Old Firm home matches pretty clear for the matches v. each other and crunch matches at the end of the season.

I'd imagine Hamilton v. Celtic will be one and possibly another one on a saturday lunchtime or monday night. I'd hope we'd be considered for the saturday lunchtime, since we're the 'new team' in the league (and Motherwell have an awful record when playing live on tv!)

These might be right but I wouldn't be taking it as fact. Someone posted fixtures for the opening day ahead of them being released on pie and bovril a couple of seasons ago and they were completely wrong, as were the teams involved in the first round of the CIS cup that someone put up here.

Wouldn't mind that as a first fixture of the season. On saying that i'm not really not bothered who we get first up, just the fact we're back is good enough for me.

Although plausible I personally dont see why Sky would need first day fixtures in advance of them being released to the public. Fixtures come out on 17th June, new season starts in august. Thats six weeks notice as is. More than enough for Sky.

All this lot are in european action prior to SPL kick-off on 14th August

Motherwell play Europa League R2 QUAL - 15th July and 22nd July

Celtic play Champs League R3 QUAL 27th or 28th July

Hibs play Europa League R3 QUAL - 29th July

and

Dundee United play Europa League play-off game a few days later - first leg 19th August

I don't really mind who we play on the opening day as long as we're at home, as those fixtures suggest. I'd love to start life back in the SPL with a full house at TCS and 3 points towards our top 6 finish. :P
