Well its Iceland that just scored in case you didnt get the jist from the previous post... its now 1-2 after a screamer from Sigursson.

You would have to say Iceland's international future prospects - at all levels - look a whole lot better than Scotland's.

That under 21 side would have beaten our full side.

Agree. And they had 2 defenders out and it wasn't even their first choice keeper. Stunning goal from mcGuire though. Thank fook he was banned for the game last week.

Makes our coaching system to bring young players on is failing miserably, time to get rid of the largs mafia.

We are becoming a pretty poor footballing nation on the euro map.

Unfortunately, I think that's a bit more accurate.

It's not all so gloom and doom.

13 members of the Iceland squad were 'full' internationals, taken out of the first team's squad for their match against Portugal to face ourselves.

why are you saying its all doom and gloom if anything its on the up, only 4 years ago the u19 team lost 1-0 to spain in the final of the u19 european cup and if you look at some of these u21 player like wilson macguire and bannan there is real talent there

iceland had a 7 million pound player playing

alan martins has always been dodgy from distance shots, just look at the howler vs azerbijan and it is usually his fault when we concede goals.

watching the highlights on sky we actually were quite good pretty organised and flourishes of quality murphy hit the post early with someone elses shot getting cleared off the line if that went in it would have been different a few years these guys will be full time internationals none of them are world class at the moment and most wont become world class but with so many playing every week in the spl and the rest getting a few games in the premiership and training with so of the worlds best things are definatly on the up for scotland

We're becoming a poor footballing Nation !!! What garbage , we could and probably should have beat a very good Iceland side last night and as has been mentioned we only lost the U19 final 2 - 1 against Spain in 2006 .

Your contrariness p1$$es me off. We were outplayed, outclassed and deservedly beaten by a bunch of Eskimos last night.

We should surely be asking ourselves why countries like that have come on leaps and bounds over the past ten years, while we have gone steadily backwards.

we arnt going down. the u21 squad are extremely talented imo

we got through a tough group to get to the play offs with austria and belarus who are better than you would expect.

it took 74 minutes to score against us and we answered straight back spectacularly the only player that could score against us last night was signed by hoffenhiem for 7 million pound worth almost 4x more than our most expensive player in the u21 squad get off they're back we did well to get to the play offs lets see how the u 17's do in the elite round in spring for the european championship and u19s look like they are going to the elite round next spring for they're championship to.

the u17s qualified with out losing so dont just base your views on the u21's failing to get to the euro's cause the u17's and u19's are looking good at the moment

Martin, surely the fact they had 13 full internationals in the U21 squad shows exactly why it's all doom and gloom? It's proof positive of just how far ahead of us they are when they can produce youngsters capable of competing at such a level....and that from a population that's only about 6% that of Scotland.

In contrast we have people getting excited because a small handful of our U21's look like they "might" make decent players. Not to mention the fact that we're forever looking backwards at players who are past their best to try and find answers to the problems.

There's no justification for how poor we are as a football nation, only excuses....and poor ones at that.

Outplayed ? Outclassed ? Deservedly beaten ? Did you watch the game ?

Oh dear.........Well, I, for once, agree wholeheartedly with Johnboy.

We were beaten, home and away, by Iceland. Enough said surely.

DC, you mentioned 2006, you are starting to sound like England fans, Aberdeen fans or even ICT fans remembering the glory day(s). Lets talk about now, or this season at least. Once again we will fail to qualify for zilch, whilst all around us are off on their footy holidays.

Luke, stick a capital in every now and then, it makes it easier to read, we are not on bebo here. You mentioned a spectacular goal. The Icelandic goals were special ones as well. If anything, ours as spectacular and innovative as it was, was a tad fortunate, however spectacular, but both of their goals came from footballing play.

The Europeans have long criticised the likes of Scotland for placing too much emphasis on winning at U21 level. In the late 80s, we should have won the World Cup but it didn't translate to a golden age.

Someone once compared it to Liverpool v Everton U12s, where Liverpool won 11-1 (IIRC). But long-term, Everton won asWayne Rooney came through the ranks.

Are you referring to the 1989 Under-16 World Cup final, when Scotland lost on penalties to Saudi Arabia Under-21s?

I mentioned 2006 as the players from that side would now be in their early 20's and should be pushing for full International honours like the Spanish players are . It was nothing to do with glory days , and by the way England and Aberdeen won major trophies so are entitled to refer back to their glory days ( in Englands case maybe not every time they play a game though ) .

Of the players who played in that under 19 2006 cup final 4 Scottish players have now went on to earn caps for Scotland and one player has chosen New Zealand as his nation team.

Lee Wallace

Callum Elliot

Gary Kenneth

Graeme Dorrans

For Spain three players have featured for the full team since playing in that cup final, most famous of the lot being Gerad Pique. The other two are Juan Mata with 3 goals in 9 games and Diego Capel.

I managed to fall out with a steward before I even entered the game. They wouldnt let my 9 yr old take the remains of his bag of chips in to the ground even tho they sell chips at the servery. However my husband was carrying a carrier bag of sweets for the kids and this didnt even get checked! Enjoyed the game not the result and the Maguire goal was spectacular in real life.As usual glorious failure!
