"Its not just the media I dont like, its their players, the team, their fans the country, everything! :P F**k them"

Neighbourly rivalry you say? Thank God I don't live near Joe Dimaggio

Well said Oz! What a sad attitude Joe has (if he's serious).

Oz (or maybe it should be Oztrich). The thread had a decent chance up till post 9.

Now away and read what you've written. In your haste to show how prejudiced we all are, you've brought out a whole raft of prejudices of your own and managed to patronise those that contributed at the same time.

You can't wait for somebody like Joe to come along (even assuming he's serious) so you can tar us all with the same brush (post 51).

And they say Scots have a chip. Sheesh....

Living down here in englandshire for the past few years has changed my view on the Scotland england rivalry thing. I used to be one of these guys who would cheer on anyone against england at anything. But after living here and mixing with the natives my view has changed. I have seen how english people have responded to my accent, how they make comments on my tattoo, how they make refrence to my Scotland and ICT stickers on my cars, how they reacted to me wearing the kilt at my recent wedding.

All of this has convinced me that I was wrong in my belief in cheering against england in sporting events.

Because after all the racist abuse, vandalising my van and car to get stickers off, binmen who drag my bin 20 yards down the road because it has a scotland flagged number on it(everyone elses is left on drive) the laughter and abuse I got whilst in my kilt, and many other things that have happened in my time here, I think I will cheer louder, and louder at every game for whoever they play and at whatever they play at. EG Germany 6 england 2 in womans euro's the other day. Oh how I laughed.

If this makes me sad so be it, but don't be niaive and think that england fans are not the same down here as fans are in Scotland. Its not just the media thats anti Scotland. Some of the general public are indeed more anti Scotland.

And you will ask why am I here then? We all make mistakes, except, for meeting the latest mrs dude who is Yorkshireese. But like Scotland there are the exceptions, and there are quite a lot of good people here as well. Some of whom actually understand why some of us Scots feel the way we do.

"i will be giving my backing to whoever they play"

Sounds anti English to me

"I suppose i am racist and biggoted too eh?"

No that's DornachCaley's pleasure.

Don't get me wrong Smee, I don't expect you to be glued to the TV to support England but all this support anybody that plays England is so old hat and boring and a tad immature. :baby01:

Would you expect Liverpool fans to support Man Utd in Europe? Or Rangers supports Celtic? While some say they want their teams to do well in Europe they still take every little bit of glee they can from it if they do get knocked out. Its rivalry. Its Football. So I dont want my rivals to win the World Cup. I think thats fairly justified.

And theirs nothing more annoying than Lee Dixons smug mug when we get beat. I guarantee I'll see it today on football focus. Then theirs that newspaper guy on Sky sports news. And the guy who does the morning report. Faces like cheshire cats discussing our mess and then talking up the English chances. There are several English sporting figures who do poke fun, but its usually in the most patronising smug way possible. Not a joke. Its smug. Up itself.

Then its also worth remembering the Highland clearances. U must realise that alot of the guys on here are actually old enough to remember the persecution, murder and rape of the people there. It cut deep.

Ever been in a London taxi with a Scots accent. How about double fare and out and out racism in your face.

Ya big bunch a bullies you. Well your no gettin ma lunch money!

(please excuse my outburst. My english Primary 6 teacher made me write a letter of apology to an English pupil for saying England are Sh*t (the team and he knew i meant that) before the Euro 96 game which was made worse after we were beaten. I was a little too young to tell her where she could shove her letter of apology but Im still bitter - oh and only scottish people spit by the way)

On the point of Argentina definitely qualifying. Dont forget Uruguay have Forlan and Im pretty sure that Ecuador have had an awful qualifying campaign thus far. Could still be all on by the last game and I'd have to take Uruguay in that if all was on the line. Thats if Maradonna still has a job.

But I still think the 3 front runners will be Spain, Holland and Brazil. With England and Italy after that. If the likes of France and Portugal qualify they can also be in the mix.

Mantis, I can assure you that I do not have a chip on my shoulder regards England. I am just as much pro Scotland as I am England sometimes probably more so. I merely stated that normally on a thread about Engand (football team) the posts would be less than flattering. It was meant as I have previously stated as a tongue in cheek comment. I can't find anything wrong with post 51, someone mentioned neighbourly rivalry and I merely stated that I would not like Joe as my neighbour if those were his views, again slightly tongue in cheek but obviosly not taken that way. I did realise that he was probably not serious with his post which is why I posted as I did. If I thought he was serious I wouldn't have dignified it with a response. You state that in post 51 that I'm tarring you all with the same brush, please let me know how you came to this conclusion from what was written. It mentions Joe DiMaggio and no-one else. If it has caused offence to you or any others I do apologise as none was meant but to be honest with you I don't really see how it could. I was going to stick a smilie here but it might be misconstrued so I won't bother.

Notice the thing with the whole "England won in 66!" thing, ICT supporters time and again, on here and other places go on about the famous ICT victories. It's obviously not to the scale of winning the World Cup, but all teams have famous victories which they go on about to this day. Just ignore it. I do.

Saying you will support anyone who plays against England, is the same as saying you will support anyone that plays against blacks. Think about it. Saying "I'm Scottish but I don't mind the English" is like saying, "I'm black but I think brown people are alright". It's not really something to be proud of, it's kinda expected of you.

England have failed every time they have had to mix it with a big nation. There is a difference this time, rather than just having good players, they now have SOME great players, and a great manager. Even though, so do Spain, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina (well, maybe not a great manager) and Italy. They at least have a chance but will need to turn it on against some top teams. I want them to do well but, I want the best team to win.

For the record, I'm a walker, but wheelchairs are alright in my book. I'm sooo sound.

The English are a race.

Race is not only defined by colour. Rivalry based on nationality is a form of racism. The same as rivalry based on colour. If I came on here and said "I absolutely want China to lose to anyone they play in sport. I hate them. They think they are better than us and their media is far to nationalistic" that's racism, the hatred of a group of people, based on where they come from. Same goes for England but that's alright for some reason.

However, this is way off topic and I shouldn't have brought it up.

They have a good chance, if they can finally mix it with the top, daddy teams.

Rivalry based on nationality is a form of racism.

Simply put...it is in NO way any form of racism. Racism is when an individual expresses his belief that people from a different race than his/her own are inferior.

What if I think black people are better looking than brown people but white people are the ugliest? By your definition I'm not being racist. However, if I say white people are the best looking race on the earth, I'm being racist? It's all racism.

I would suggest that your use of the words "better looking" and "Ugliest" could be giving the impression that one race is superior to the other

but I put my own race at the bottom of the pile. To be racist, you said I had to say my race was superior to another.

Fair do's Oz about post 51 - it was just an afterthought anyway. But I stand by the rest of it. You're a bit paranoid!

I would say....should you hold that view then you are still inferring one race is inferior to another! After all, there is positive discrimination....so am sure there could be negative racialism. If not...am coining the phrase now. Definition being...to be of the belief that ones race is inferior to others.

Yeah but by the time the world cup comes round it'll have been 44 years. Its not much to brag about. Winning on home soil after an easy run to final and then a little help from officials to beat the better team.

And ICT aint been around for 40 years never mind bragged about results for that long.

The English are not a race, they like us are a nationality.

Rivalry based on nationality is not racism. It is a natural clan reaction inbuilt in all colonial animals such as homo sapiens.

And the irational dislike of other nationalities is xenophobia. Most dislike for the English tends to have some rational :021:

Now the definition of racism -

? 1 the belief that there are characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to each race. 2 discrimination against or antagonism towards other races.

Interesting

Anyway this is I AGREE way off topic and getting into territory that im sure site moderators look to avoid.

So I think England have a chance yes. I dont really want them to win though because they will just rub it in our faces for 40 years.

Besides I forgot to mention Germany as contenders in a previous post and you can NEVER write of the Germans.

As some have said, I think Spain or Holland could take England with fully fit squads.

Also, the Brazil friendly should be interesting.. :)

Not forgetting Argentina. I actually think they're gonna win it next year. They too have a new manager, not just that but he is the best Argentinian footballer ever, so are going to be buzzing with belief and confidence.

Can't bring myself to support England though, after all the media hype that has been, and will be, driven into our heads about them over the next 8 months. Fair play to them if they do win it though, but I reallyhope they f*ck it up again.

Why should the fact that he was a great player mean that they'll be successful? From what I gather he's pretty inept at managing.

Aye, didn't realise quite how fine they're cutting it if they are to make it there.

Not having the best of times under Diego.
