Looks like the Scottish government wil sponser the League Cup next season using cash from proceeds of crime

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_cups/9431726.stm

Is this a damning inditement of the state of Scottish football that no commercial sponsor wants to be involves, is the quality & standard of product so poor nobody wants to associate? If thats the case, then if we go to 10 teams and the product reduces further in quality as expected are we going to be in a situation where all of Scottish football is government funded - because thats got to be the 'beginning of the end'?

Initially I thought this was a good Idea using money from crime to promote football

but

The government have taken the place of a potential sponsor to pay for the cup

Would it have been better to sit back and see what private sector offers come in first and then look at involvement as a partnership with a company if investment is low.

Could a million pounds be invested more wisely to help the youth deprived areas as opposed to giving football clubs money instead

Or perhaps the public would show favoritism to a private sector company which invests £1,000,000 in deprived areas as opposed to promoting itself from being linked with a football cup.

A few companies have had bad publicity of late regarding the 'pay your taxes' demos.

I wish they would use the cash to fill in the potholes. Don't have a problem with them using the cash to sponsor the tournament though.

off topic, but, we are still waiting for potholes from November to be sorted, get the Japanese on the job!!

Japan pothole fixed

This is money made from crime and taken from the criminal. The Scottish government have pledged to use the cash to help the youth you describe. Part of that help is to sponsor the league cup for a season and use that competition to promote the work they will be subsidising. The football clubs will be a part of the programme. It is hoped that clubs will give the kids a platform to help themselves and get them of the streets. As to finding sponsors, it has been known for over a year that CIS were pulling out but nobody else came along. Just like the Scottish cup which had to have a year of government sponsorship before it found a new sponsor.
