Boycott the Gypo Game

thinks we are confusing the "3" in this and other threads (or maybe I am)

From reading various threads, it is my understanding that 3 fans attended last nights meeting along with reps from club, police and trust ... but it was TWO complaints that led to all this, one written, one verbal.

sorry scotty, i cant remember where i got 3 from, so to correct my last post, and allow folk see my mistake,

If we got 3 RC fans to say they dont mind will this make it ok to use the G word, does this make me a Racist for thinking its all PC over the top.

I ask............what did the Gypsy Traveller community do that was so bad as to them being likened to Ross County fans anyway?

If you've ever had any involvement with the true Gypsy you'd know that their standards of decency and cleanliness are far superior to that of the Dingwall dweller.

Thats a fair point when you put it like that, maybe it is unfair to call them Gypsy's as to be honest Ive never actually had a problem with them... hummm what to call them in a "Banter" style.

I'll be boycotting it, aswell as every other home game from now on.

Got better things to do with my time than have some jobsworth f*ck try and pounce on me for farting.

Roll on a few good away days though hopefully.

nope, that ship has well and truly sailed I am afraid in so far as using it as "banter" with RC fans.

does this make me a Racist for thinking its all PC over the top.

I am sure some could argue you were and others could argue you were not. Personally I agree with you that this is over the top in terms of PC bull**** and I can be as pedantic as the next man in supporting some "PC" things !

My own personal opinion in all of this - and I dont just mean the debate over the word "gypsy" - is that interpretation and context are the key. There are a lot of grey areas in most (but not all) "PC" decisions and unfortunately the law does not accomodate things on a sliding scale like that ... it is either within or outwith the law, nothing in between and we are all so scared of falling foul of the PC stuff that no-one really challenges any of it to any great degree.

As far as I am concerned personally, I do not have an issue with the "G" word being used as banter towards County fans, but I do/did when it was being used towards Marius. It might smack of double standards, but in the case of County it is a word used as light hearted banter in the same way as we get accused of being orphans who are over familiar with our ovine friends ! (had to slip in the PC wording) whereas in the case of Marius we felt it was being used as a personal insult due to the origins of the Roma people. Same word, different scale, context and intention in my opinion.

You could argue the same about the "N" word ..... I personally do not use it, ever. It would not be appropriate for me to do so in any circumstance I can think of and we do not and would not allow it on here. However, being one half of an inter-racial couple and socialising with my wife's siblings I hear it used in music her brothers listen to and in conversation between her brothers and their friends all the time .... it is not an issue for them as its part of the "banter" between many young black adult males but if I used it there would be an almighty ****storm ! So its OK on some levels, but not on others .... I can live with that if the people who are having it used against them can ..... just as the vast majority of County fans dont seem to mind the "G" tag and accept it as banter.

The bottom line however is that now that we have been told that the use of "gypsy" as an adjective at least is off-limits, we will need to be vigilant over its use in this forum. As I explained in another thread, this has nothing to do with our own personal opinions, it is to protect ourselves legally.

Don't worry, we'll be okay - very few of them can actiually read or write.

This is generally true. Also nb that the Scottish traveller hates to be associated and confused with the Roma, ie gypsies, branding them as crooked, dirty and unreliable. AFAIK the correct name for those itinerant folk is "gypsy travellers" as specified by the Scottish government. I fully understand the discussion about their being Scotland's forgotten other. BUT and this backs up Scotties comments about context, if travelling folk are correctly called "gypsies", how the hell can it be an insult? We know that RC supporters are not, on the whole gypsies, so any usage is metaphorical.

Also any connections between Romania and Roma are spurious. Roma trace their origins to India, according to latest thinking, and the word, gypsy, is an adaptation of Egyptian, where it was once thought they came from. Scottish travellers, btw, have a fascinating history too, not least in the USA, where they are, or were, early C20, the byword for cheating and meanness.

All very confusing and interesting, but heavy handedness does nothing to clear it up.

Having lived on Romania for a number of years and had a look at where the gypsys originated from your account above is exactly how I read it.

Gordy, using the word Gypsy or Traveller or, indeed, Gypsy Traveller to describe that race of people is not racist. Saying that Dingwall folk, because they don't wash or keep to the right side of the law, are likened to Gypsies is to say that Gypsies dont wash or keep to the right side of the law and thats where it all becomes racist. It is racist to infer that Gypsies are like Dingwall folk.

We could, however, use a word from the Cant language to describe Dingwall folk that would not be deemed racist:

Gadgie (derived from Romany for non-Roma) is a word meaning "man" or "person" in the town of Berwick-on-Tweed and can also be found in Geordie English and other dialects of Northern English. In Dundee and Edinburgh it has more recently been adopted as a derogatory term applied to certain people with the stereotypical view of a "Gadgie" as someone, of any race or background who is poorly educated and engages in hooliganism, petty criminality or loutish behaviour, although the phrase is used to cover people who may be law abiding and good natured, who nonetheless are scruffy in appearance and lack good communication skills. They are often assumed to be unemployed or working in low paid and short term jobs. Although the term is most commonly used to describe youths or people roughly under the age of 30 it is also sometimes said of people of other ages that fit the stereotype. Indeed, the people who were the target for the phrase when the term first came into common use as a derogatory term in the late 1970s and early 1980s are likely to be well into middle age as of 2006. The term has somewhat replaced the older ?keelie? or ?keeley?, which was used in the 1940s until the 1970s in Dundee as a word to refer to the stereotypical underclass. Although Keelie perhaps focused less on the criminality and character of the person and had more connotations relating to their supposed Irish, Highland or rural cultural background.

I dont really care what people say, the club is creating its own downfall. They are idiots and dont have a clue. I will NOT be going to the game tomorrow and i will not be paying for another home game(I have my season ticket so i dont need to). I am not happy and they are complete morons.

I wanted to write alot more but i canna be arsed, it will only be wasted energy which i could use drinking just now!

Rant over!

I make the 6 hour round trip to about half of all home games to support the club I love and I don't see the need to stop. If you have a problem bloody well write to the board or the supporters committee lot.

I really doubt the club's going to take any action when there's a few empty seats here and there and theres some bub's ranting and moaning on an internet forum.

I should imagine these 'lol lets boycott!!!11!1eleven!!11' people will be the first to complain and once again rant when the club is getting about 300 people to each match, in liquidation and has a team full of local schoolboys with little to no talent whatsoever.

?15 might not make much difference but 'every little helps' and if your supporting some kind of boycott plan just because of a few narky stewards then quite frankly your probably a Gypo yourself.

If you love the club and are a true fan you'd still go to games when you can and take up issues with the club itself rather than a bloody internet forum.

I have had a season ticket with the club since TC Stadium first opened in 19-whatever it was. It's a bloody chore getting to and from games but hell I couldn't care less if I have to sit down and not allowed to swear - it might actually help the local family attendance rise for once. Atleast it's still better than a match in the Bagshaw league!

Good post Jake.....

It's sad that anyone is thinking about boycotting this one just because of the gypsy stuff. (That annoys me too, btw, but I won't let it stop me going to games)

I'll be more likely to stop going to games as a result of TB's questionable team selections, questionable tactics and an apparent lack of motivation on the field.

Sorry Alex.... my needle's stuck again.

The big worry for me is that ict is letting the elder majority of the crowd over-rule the next generation.

Ict have worked hard to get the youth through the gates, only for instances like this to force them out again.

Section g is the next generation. If the club and fellow fans (see the ridiculous mainstander) influence them to stay at home then its a sad day.

What the hell are you on about? I am not going to this for a variaty of reasons. They tell us to seat with no reasonable explination! Blocking views? My arse! Theres no one behind us to block the views of. I am alos tired of how poor we play. Why should i waste my time and money for a team that wouldnt think twice of providing anything decent for us? I will continue going with my season ticket though i will not be renewing it unless we are heard. I am tired of us being the billpayers yet getting nothing in return bar some poor, poor footballing performances.

Like it or not, all this being against a boycott is very much a highland attitude.

"Oh no, we cannot go against the institution"

Go down to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen.....THOUSANDS of Celtic and Rangers fans are Boycotting home games because of the board e.x and its the same with Aberdeen and Hearts.

I know some genuinly belive that a boycott would be bad, and thats fine. But i know alot of people are stuck with this damned highland attitude.

It was mentioned in another Thread about this Attitude towards things, and i think this is one of them.
