There's several theories on this one, but the one which I have heard the most and which makes most sense is as follows.....

A Sneck is another name for a latch or catch (most commonly the old fashioned thumb latches).

If you look at a map of the North Sea as it comes round and in towards the Moray Firth you will see that where Fort George juts out towards the point South East of Fortrose/Rosemarkie that it looks just like an old Thumb Latch...which in years gone by would have been known more commonly as "A Sneck"
