Memories of Olde Snekke.

In the early days of TV in Sneck there was just the BBC. Grampian (and the famous "Bothy Nichts") arrived in the early 1960s - 1961 or 1962 ?

Aye ma loon.... Bothy Nichts wi' the Kennethmont Loons an' Quines John Mearns. It wid mak ye cringe back in the days o' Jimmy Spankie, Douglas Kynoch and June Imrie on GTV. I think it was indeed 1961, creating competition for the likes of Cliff Mitchelmore, Judith Chalmers and Fyfe Robertson on the BBC.

Osprey ballroom in Aviemore was our haunt.

Kinell!!, there's a blast from the past. We used to hitch hike up from Dundee mid 70's and spend weekends at the Osprey, lot of northern soul nights , also saw Bill Barclay and a few other comedians (plenty of them about right enuff) the Viking bar was for early drinking pre Osprey and the winking owl for posh Ski totty in the winter

Some good stuff on here, although I'm too young to remember much more than visiting Fine Fare and La Scala lol.

Should start another thread where folks can post pics of places & old sneck - would be good to see what the place looked like before it became full of franchised pubs and mundane national organisations. Certainly sounds like a lot of character is gone :(

Fine Fare where MacKays is now. Remember Wm Low before they crossed the river? Littlewoods moved in there and what about Liptons with their cafe on Upper Bridge Street. Coop on Montague Row and the independant freezer store opposite Telford Street, Frozen Foods. Tesco have a lot to answer for, the small retailers used to manage okay before they moved in.

There seemed to be more pubs in town back in the 60's and 70's than there are now!

Aye there was! mind you more people drank out in those days, no cheap supermarket booze to fill up with before you went out.
