MART POOM

DOB  CLUB ARSENAL

HEIGHT 1.93m POSITION GOALKEEPER

WEIGHT 85kg SQUAD NUMBER 21

PROFILE

Estonia international who has over 100 caps for his country, Poom signed a permanent deal with Arsenal in January 2006 following an initial spell on loan from Sunderland. Similarly joined the Black Cats on a two-month loan from former club Derby County during the 2002/03 season to ease a goalkeeping crisis before signing permanently in February 2003 and quickly became a fans' favourite, cemented by his last-gasp equaliser against Derby at Pride Park in September 2003. Will look to put pressure on the Gunners' other stoppers Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia for a starting berth.

On the subject of Goalkeepers, i still cannot believe Jimmy Calderwood. I've had to put up with him ranting and raving about how great Langfield is in the Aberdeen papers, and how he refused to believe Mark Brown got into the Scotland B squad ahead of ©langers.

This is his recent pish in the Daily Ranger

"Calderwood has stood by the stopper despite a series of howlers that have hit the Dons' bid for Champions League football and Scottish Cup glory.

But although the Pittodrie manager is still convinced Langfield is the best Scottish keeper after Hearts star Craig Gordon, he is running out of patience"

So despite him costing the club goals left right and center, the fans all saying ©Langers is rubbish too, he still thinks he is the 2nd best Scottish keeper.

From P&J

Caley Thistle manager Charlie Christie intends to sign a goalkeeper today - but the recruit will definitely start as understudy to youngster Michael Fraser.

Christie has been linked with St Mirren's Tony Bullock, Bryn Halliwell, of St Johnstone, and Roddy McKenzie, of Dunfermline. But his search has also taken in Premiership club Arsenal.

He said: "We have whittled it down to about three or four names, a mixture of youth and experience.

"We had Ian McCaldon training here as a free agent after his time with Ross County. He would have been the perfect solution, if he hadn't signed for Peterhead six days prior to Mark Brown moving on.

"Tony Bullock is one of the names we have considered. His agent contacted me as soon as he heard Mark was going to Celtic.

"One of the names which cropped up in conversation with director of football Graeme Bennett was a young lad at Arsenal.

"However, would someone from London want to come up here on loan, and if they did, would they be happy playing second fiddle to Mike Fraser? That could be a stumbling block."

Christie rejected reports former Sunderland and Derby County goalkeeper Mart Poom, who is now with Arsenal, was his target.

The manager said: "We would be delighted to take a goalkeeper with Mart Poom's experience, but common sense would say there is no way he would come up here and sit on the bench."

Christie will not rush into the transfer market in search of a replacement for Dundee United-bound Darren Dods and has also received some good news concerning Craig Dargo's injury.

Christie said: "Darren is here until the end of the season. I know he will be giving 100%.

"We have had better news about Craig Dargo's injury, and his dislocated shoulder isn't as bad as first feared. He was very upbeat yesterday. He will probably be out for about a month, but that is two weeks less than we first thought."

INVERNESS will bring out a new away strip next season to commemorate 10 years at their Caledonian Stadium home.

It will only be available to season ticket holders, who were notified by post yesterday of their chance to pay £100 for the privilege of having their name incorporated into the design.

For their fee, they will also receive a replica copy of the shirt and a certificate. Caley Jags intend to wear the new outfit during each of their away fixtures next term and up to 1,000 names can be included on it.

Ross County ran a similar scheme last season, while Aberdeen produced a strip with fans' names on it - which was worn just once in a friendly with Hamburg at Pittodrie - to mark their centenary in 2003.
