In reverse order................

8:-  Lev Yashin  He played his entire career for Dynamo Moscow sports club, from 1949 to 1971, winning the football championship of the USSR five times and the USSR Cup three times. He also won a USSR ice hockey championship (1953) as a goalkeeper for his club after three disastrous tryout attempts to get his place in the starting line-up of the main football team.

Lev Yashin is the only goalkeeper ever to win the European Footballer of the Year Award (1963). He is also believed to have blocked around 150 penalty kicks during his career; far more than any other goalkeeper in history. When asked for his secret, he would say the trick was "to have a smoke to calm your nerves, then toss back a strong drink to tone your muscles."

9:- The Battle of Berne is the informal name given to the football match between Brazil and Hungary during the World Cup finals on June 27, 1954 in Berne.

Without their talisman Ferenc Puskás, out injured, Hungary was leading Brazil 2-0 when Brazil finally scored their first with a penalty. From then on the match grew progressively violent.

Brazil's Nilton Santos and Hungary captain József Bozsik were sent off in the 73rd minute during a bad-tempered and physical second-half which also saw Brazil's Humberto sent off in the 79th minute.

Hungary won the match 4-2.

Post-match brawls continued when Puskás allegedly attacked a Brazilian player with a bottle (other reports blame a spectator) and the Brazilian squad retaliated by fighting with the Hungarians in the opposition's dressing room. Hungary's coach Gustav Sebes ended up with four stitches after being struck by a broken bottle.

The English referee Arthur Ellis was dismayed at FIFA's decision not to discipline players sent off during the match

10:- On July 2, 1994, Escobar was gunned down outside a bar in a Medellín suburb. According to Escobar's girlfriend, the killer shouted "¡Gol!" (mimicking play-by-play men in the region for their notorious calls after a goal is scored) for each of the 12 bullets fired. Escobar had scored an own goal in a match against the United States on 22 June. Stretching to cut out a John Harkes cross, he deflected the ball into his own net in the second match of Group A. The USA won the game 2–1, and as a result, Colombia was unexpectedly dismissed from the tournament in the first round.

The murder was widely believed to be a punishment for the own goal. It is not clear whether the murderer acted on his own initiative, or whether he was sent out by one of the gambling syndicates who had bet large amounts of money on Colombia to win the Cup, or at least qualify for the second round.

The BBC issued an apology the following day after its pundit Alan Hansen commented on another match that "the Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that."

fishy, to expand on number three:-

The 1950 Football World Cup was the only World Cup ever held which was not decided by a knockout final (although the last match of the tournament did end up determining the overall winner, and this match, also known as Maracanazo, is usually referred to as "the 1950 World Cup Final" although it differed from a final in one significant respect : one team went into the game needing only a draw to win the Cup). It was also the first year that the cup itself would be referred to as the Jules Rimet Cup, to mark the 25th anniversary of Rimet's presidency of FIFA. It was won by Uruguay, who had won the inaugural competition in 1930

The British nations were able to take part, having rejoined FIFA four years earlier, after 17 years of self-imposed exile. It was decided to use the 1949-1950 British Home Championship as a qualifying group, with whoever finished first and second qualifying. England finished first and Scotland second, but the Scots refused to go as they were not British Champions. Turkey withdrew as well.

A combined Great Britain team had recently beaten the rest of Europe 6-1 in an exhibition match and England went into the competition as one of the favourites. However, it was not to be, as they went crashing out in a shocking 1-0 defeat by the USA (when the score appeared in English newspapers, many thought it was a typo; which combined with their 1-0 defeat by Spain led to Spain continuing to the Final Pool.

The Final Pool took the form of a final group stage, involving all teams who won their group stage: Brazil, Spain, Sweden, and Uruguay. The overall winner of the World Cup for 1950 would be the team that managed to finish on top of this group. Brazil outscored everyone with a 7-1 thrashing of Sweden and 6-1 rout of Spain. Before the decisive match, Brazil were sitting on top of the Final Pool and had one game left to play – Uruguay who lay just behind in second and only a point behind. On July 16th before a huge home crowd officially counted at 174,000 but unofficially estimated at over 200,000 in the Estádio Maracanã, the host nation had only to draw against Uruguay and the trophy would be theirs. After such crushing victories over Spain and Sweden, it looked certain they would take the title, especially as the home nation went ahead in the second minute of the second half, thanks to a goal from Friaça. However, Uruguay equalised and then with just over 11 minutes left to play, went ahead 2-1 and Uruguay were crowned World Cup Winners for a second time. The stunning defeat of Brazil is referred to as the "Maracanazo".

The average attendance of nearly 61,000 per game—aided greatly by eight matches (including five featuring hosts Brazil) held in the newly-built Maracanã—set a record that would not be broken until 1994, when the World Cup was held in the United States for the first time. Not counting the Maracanã matches, the average attendance was a still-impressive 37,500. However, the only venues that saw crowds comparable to (or greater than) those in recent World Cups were the Maracanã and São Paulo. Other venues saw considerably smaller crowds.

5:- Euro 92 England 1 - 2 Sweden.

Lineker was taken off - substituted in this game, his last ever England appearance with the scores still level and half an hour to play. It resulted in the classic Sun headline of "Swedes 2, Turnip 1", with managers Graham Taylors head superimposed on a turnip.

6:- The 2002 World Cup.  The names of the 3 official World Cup computer-generated mascots have been revealed after a vote by 987,411 people from all over the world. The cheeky characters live in Atmozone and it is their mission to create the special atmosphere for World Cup 2002 and capture lots of young children's pocket money.

"Ato" was chosen as the name of the glowing orange coach character with a cyber goatee, while the two blue and purple strikers will be known as "Nik" and "Kaz." "Ato" was chosen by a narrow margin over "Amo" & "Poz", whereas "Nik" and "Kaz" won comfortably over the other possible names in their category. Fans voted in Macdonald's stores in Korea & Japan and over the Net at the official FIFA World Cup site or at the Macdonald's homepages in the two host nations. The vote took place over one month from 1st February. Franc, Won and Yen were not options

7:- Scotland and Manchester United legend Denis Law, upon hearing the news of England's extra time triumph over West Germany, famously declared, "That's the blackest day of my life".

He only stated what the rest of us thought.

2:- Australia netted 31 goals against newcomers American Samoa, setting the record of the highest-scoring match and biggest margin victory ever. This was only two days after Australia thrashed Tonga 22-0, a then international record. Also, Archie Thompson’s 13 goals in the match against American Samoa surpassed the previous record of 7.
