The Soldiers Song

IMMORTAL HOWDEN ENDER

Recommended Posts

Outside the ground after the game there were a number of Celtic fans belting out 'ooh ah, up the ra'.

Do you honestly think the SPL would dare to punish Celtic? It's quite clear that the Old Firm are pretty much untouchable in Scotland - only UEFA would dare penalize them for anything.

Also heard the entire Celtic end chanting 'fenian army' a few times. I bet these same people would cause a huge stink if they heard anyone else using the word. Absolute morons, every single one.

The Fenians (English pronunciation: /ˈfiːnɪənz/), both the Fenian Brotherhood and Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), were fraternal organisations dedicated to the establishment of an independent Irish Republic in the 19th and early 20th century... Fenianism, according to O'Mahony, was symbolised by two principles: firstly, that Ireland has a natural right to independence, and secondly, that that right could be won only by an armed revolution.

What in the heck does any of this have to do with Scottish football in 2011? How many in the Celtic end are actually Irish? They're Scottish born and bred, so are their parents. They have absolutly nothing to do with any Irish paramilitary organisation. They're just a bunch of losers living in a fantasy world. These are the same kind of people who join gangs and cults, who need to be part of a group to compensate for their low self esteem. They all need to grow up and get a life.

Obvioiusly if fans were chanting up the ra then it should be criticised and Celtic punished, which they wont be.

But I dont see how they could possibly be fined or face any punishment for singing the Soldiers song as it's the national anthem of Ireland and hardley a sectarian anthem. Agreed it is sung by twats who aren't Irish but cant really fine them for having plastic irish fans.

The Soldiers song came over loud and clear on the telly and it was clearly being sung by more than a minority. Suppose there will be a slap on the wrist and a mediocre fine.

This would be the very same song you sung for decades in your beloved jungle if i'm not mistaken

Does this mean Scotland will be fined the next home international when flower of scotland is sung?

Not sure if this is a very poor attempted fishing trip or Old firm tit for tat point scoring but whatever it is its one of your worst threads ever and that takes some doing

Am i one of the grounded few who doesnt feel offended or upset at chants by either of the OF? Sure....i agree...most of them probably have no connection or understanding with what they sing about, but jesus.....its only words and songs at the end of the day. Its not like they are clubbing seals or something. We are way too easily offended these days

The Scottish National Anthem is about events from hundreds of years ago. Doesnt The English national anthem have a verse about crushing Rebellious Scots?

Nah....mibees im just thick skinned....but i think theres far more worrying trends to put focus on in this day and age

Some fans are as thick as mince and quite a few of the Celtic fans reaffirm that. When did the famine occur in the East End of Glasgow?

Can anyone tell me if these songs are actually sung by Irish fans, in Ireland at an Irish football club, I would assume not.

I would say its more to do with hating protestants and trying to get a reaction, if they bothered to open up a history book they would actually learn that the Protestant King Billy married the Catholic king of England's daughter. That was before it all kicked off but it didnt seem to be a problem marrying into a different religion.

Not sure what history book you have there! Mary was protestant.

I suppose that it depends on the wording that is altered or added to the original - actually just like Flower of Scotland - in the world of the politically correct.

Ah - The Jungle - now that was a terracing only second to the Howden End. :nanananana:

Mary II's father, who was duke of York, converted to RC but King Charles I, her uncle,I commanded that she and her sister Anne be brought up in the protestant faith. The king then went on to manage a very good highland football team.

So what have these songs got to do with football? Absolutely Sweet F*** All, which is what the authorities will do about them.

What a bunch of morons too for unveiling their woe is us persecution banner before the game - "OUR MUSIC HAS SURVIVED THROUGH FAMINE AND OPPRESSION". Get a life! Their music only serves to air political views from a bygone age and there is no place for it football, period. Yesterday's events also served to demonstrate that their team also continues to survive through dodgy refereeing and big lumbering soft overpaid foreign imports taking dives.

The sooner that they and their Old Scum partners leave Scottish Football all the better for the rest of the clubs trying to play honestly.

Superb! My sentiments exactly. Well said, Row S

A breath of fresh air - people are too willing to be offended these days.

Just how many of us would recognise a "sectarian song" if we heard it? I'm not sure there are that many and, why do the OF sing these "songs" at football matches anyway?

I stand corrected she was brought up a protestant and her dad converted to the Catholic faith when she was 6 or 7 years old.

I incorrectly assumed that her father was always a Catholic and that she would have been raised a Catholic, she still must have found it pretty confusing all the same at that age.

out of interest on that one...am i right in thinking we are liable for any fine as the fans were in our stadium???

could we impose a home fans only situation should the need arise ?

not that i imagine the club would as it would lose a significant sum of money which we will need to pay any fine that is levied but would be a decent thought of having no away celtic fans
