Hayes out for rest of the season

kinda torn on this one given that each position in the table means more money so the higher we finish the more the cash the club receives ...... Personally I would like to see us work backwards on deciding when is the right time. If we know how long his rehab is likely to be, and we know we want him ready for the start of next season, work it out so that he can play for as long as possible this season before heading off in enough time for the procedure, rehab and pre-season training .....

Not sure of the exact numbers for this year, but two or three years ago before Setanta went bust, finishing 7th was worth about £1.1m and finishing 11th was worth about £780k ..... a difference of more than £300k which is a fairly significant sum for a 'smaller' team (financially speaking) like ICT.

The numbers may be different now with the demise of Setanta but I believe the formula is still the same ...... The SPL divides all the sponsor cash based on final league position with each team guaranteed 4% of the revenue (about 500K) and then their 'bonus' payment determined by position. Each position from 12th up to 4th receives a bonus based on 0.5% increments. 12th gets 0.5%, 11th gets 1%, 10th gets 1.5% etc etc ..... in the past, this meant that each position higher up the table was worth about an extra £60k or so ...... (by comparison, 3rd gets a 5.5% bonus, so an extra 1% instead of 0.5%, and the way our league is skewed the top two get 13% and 11% as a bonus)

I recall them saying on Sportsound that each position up the table (at least in the bottom six) was worth an extra ?78-80k last season, so certainly, as Scotty says, it would seem sensible for the club to work backwards from when we need him fit to when the op has to be done. Of course they may have done that, and it might be that now is the time.

We will certainly miss him for the run in but, as I think has been mentioned on other threads, his injuries and this op will keep him out of the limelight and less susceptible to bids from any potentially interested parties.

It has its pros and its cons. Johnny is a key player and his presence in the team will have an influence on where we finish this season. However on the other hand he had no pre season training last summer through injury and by getting the surgery now would mean he would be fit for when the team re group in July.

yup ... I guess we need to leave it to the people more closely involved to work out whats best for all concerned .... The player, the club medical staff, and the surgeon/specialists ....

Playing devil's advocate from my earlier post, if you look at it the other way and accept that we lose him now, and that the lack of some of his inspirational play perhaps costs us a position or two and maybe 150-200k overall, I suppose that is better than missing out on him at the start of next season, hitting an early season slump we cannot fight our way out of, and then getting relegated by the odd point because of our slow start which would cost the club another seven figure sum ......

If we go to 10-team is it next season that 2 will definitely drop?...have completely lost track of all this political shenanigan.

Apologies, slightly :offtopic01:

Revenue distribution is still the same as that Scotty....

+ All revenues generated by the SPL are effectively put into one pot. This money comes from TV deals and other commercial contracts.

+ A support payment to the SFL and parachute payments to recently relegated clubs are then removed. All associated costs of running the SPL are also deducted.

+ The remaining amount is split two ways to the member clubs: 48% is divided equally between all 12 clubs while 52% is distributed to teams dependant upon their final league position.

+ The higher up the table that a club finishes, the more money they will receive.

League position - % of cash pot

1 - 4% + 13% = 17%

2 - 4% + 11% = 15%

3 - 4% + 5.5% = 9.5%

4 - 4% + 4.5% = 8.5%

5 - 4% + 4.0% = 8.0%

6 - 4% + 3.5% = 7.5%

7 - 4% + 3.0% = 7.0%

8 - 4% + 2.5% = 6.5%

9 - 4% + 2.0% = 6.0%

10 - 4% + 1.5% = 5.5%

11 - 4% + 1.0% = 5.0%

12 - 4% + 0.5% = 4.5%

The current TV deal (?13 Million/season) is worth only slightly less than what Setanta were paying when they collapsed (the new "higher value" deal hadn't yet kicked in..or more accurately they collapsed before they could pay it). So I would imagine the 2007/8 distribution figure of ?18 million will be comparable to current figures.

On that basis the payout for this season will be somewhere in the region of what's below, give or take a few thousand.

1 - ?3,060,000

2 - ?2,700,000

3 - ?1,710,000

4 - ?1,530,000

5 - ?1,440,000

6 - ?1,350,000

7 - ?1,260,000

8 - ?1,170,000

9 - ?1,080,000

10 - ?990,000

11 - ?900,000

12 - ?810,000 + Parachute Payment, which actually means they get more than 10th & 11th!!!

How much is a semi-fit Hayes really worth to us in the run in, especially when there's the risk he could get crocked in the next game and further aggravate his injury?

No team should be dependent on one player, and if that's the case with us then a league place or two is the least of our worries.

Don't think anyone knows the answer to that one, although Butcher did say in his post match interview on Saturday that clubs should be given at lease a 2 season notice on the change as his preparations in planning for the season where the league reduces (if it reduces) would be different than for a season under the status quo. Allowing clubs to prepare for next season and then landing them with the news that 3 teams will be relegated was utter nonsense in his opinion...and I agree.

Good decision to get it done now, and get Johnny fit and ready for next season. As said, it also keeps him out of the shop window. We may not be a 1 man team, but without him we're a lot worse off. It's no coincidence that our crap run of form coincided with Hayes injury.

To be honest, regardless of all the 'there's lots still to play for' shouts, truth is...the season is effectively over. While those in charge may well care, financially, whether we end up 7th or 10th, I think most fans see the remaining games as nothing more than a handful of meaningless games.

Glass half-full again I see DC !!!

He never lets us down with his negativity

I'm going to sound just as negaitive as DC here, but I'm really not looking forward to the remaining games without Hayes in the team. He's the spark of brilliance in the side.

I agree with the decision for Johnny to have the op just now and see it as a good piece of forward thinking from the club. We have achieved our main aim which was to stay in the SPL and from the clubs point of view I guess anything else was a bonus. We have in the past berated the club for their lack of foresight so to see them thinking forward is good to see.

I personally would rather see a fully fit Johnny Hayes next season than a half fit one this season with the possibility of the injury getting worse between now and the end of the season.

Could be that Johnny has played his last game in an ICT shirt . Hope not but could be .

Could be a good move, cant see anyone buying him when he's had an operation, too risky, when he's fit again and proving himself back to his best then worry, but that will be the transfer window in Jan 2012.

Makes me wonder how different our season would have been had Johnny been fit for it's entirity. Wonder how much truth there is in the rumour that the injury he has was sustained on xmas night out as a result of too much beer juice?

No truth whatsoever. I was at the Stadium when he arrived back from the training session where it happened.

I'm a realist and IHE posted that he'd been speaking to football agents that had Hayes on their radar , don't see the problem with what I posted tbh

Johnny Hayes will play against Hearts on Saturday before going for surgery. I don't think anyone will come in for him when he's recovering from surgery, we have him signed for another year, so if we don't extend his contract we could lose him at Christmas I suppose
