A glorious sunny day, a bumper crowd, a Premier League team at the Harmsworth park, and 7 goals – what a fantastic spectacle for Academy captain Martin Gunns testimonial.

With manager Peter Budge unavailable to attend todays game due to other commitments, Titchie and Zeeky took charge. Academy started with more or less the same team that took the field in last weekends cup game against Inverurie. The only change was Shaun Sinclair in for Stewart Ross.

Caley travelled to Wick with 6 of their first team players, including the ex Rangers and Scotland player Gary McSwegan, who joined them from Ross County just this week. This is McSwegans second trip to the Harmsworth park in as many weeks, as he played for Ross County in the friendly on the 20th July.

The first 5 minutes of the game saw pots at goal from both sides. David Watson was denied when Andrew MacLeod got a foot in on his attempt, and Martin Gunn shot high over the Caley cross-bar, following a good cross from Richard Macadie.

The first goal of the game came in 6 minutes when a Gary McSwegan cross was picked up by David Watson. He hit a powerful left foot shot which hit the underside of Bells cross-bar, and came back down over the line.

0 – 1

Despite losing this early goal Academy were playing some great football, with crisp passes and good movement. This almost produced a goal in the 17th minute when Martin Gunn got himself into a shooting position just outside the Caley box. He fired in a powerful shot on goal, but the Caley keeper Smith made the save.

At the other end Bell was forced into action when in the 23rd minute Ritchie Hart and Barry Wilson linked up well to set McSwegan up for a shot which he rifled towards goal, but Bell made a good diving save down to his left hand post.

A minute later the Academy Captain Gunn had another crack on target, this time the ball got a small deflection off a defender, and Smith again made the save pushing the ball for a corner.

Academy continued to play good football, and were really competing with Caley in all areas of the park. They got their reward in the 26th minute when Gary Manson played Richard Macadie through the middle of the Caley defence and he slotted home with a cool finish. Game on.

1 – 1

At this stage of the game Academy were making the better chances, and in 29 minutes Gary Farquhar cut the Caley defence in half with a piercing pass that found Gunn unmarked in the centre of the Caley box. Martins shot at goal was saved by Smith with his feet, and the ball fell again to Martin for a second crack which he unfortunately skied high over the bar. This was a great chance and Martin knew he probably should have scored.

Academy kept plugging away and turned their possession football into another goal in the 32nd minute. This time Gunn supplied the pass that Richard Macadie took to feet and whilst running through the middle of the Caley defence he was brought down by Tokely. Referee Fraser blew for a penalty, and there was no guessing who took it! Martin stroked the penalty kick into the right hand corner of Smiths net and to the cheers of the Academy supports he and his team-mates celebrated the goal.

2 – 1

Not content with this Academy continued to attack Caley at every opportunity. A minute after taking the lead Richard Macadie found himself in almost the exact position when he scored against the Locos last weekend, but unfortunately this time his shot went high of goal.

The last 2 minutes of the half was end to end stuff, with first David Cowie playing an accurate 30 yard pass to Macadie who was running in on goal, but unfortunately he couldn’t quite seem to get the ball from under his feet and Golabek cleared. This was immediately followed by Wilson playing in Ritchie Hart for a chance to level the game, but Harts shot was well saved by young keeper Bell.

The referee blew for half time and ended a thoroughly entertaining first 45 minutes of football.

Half time 2 – 1

Second Half:

The teams came out for the second half with only one half-time change. Kevin Macgee came on for Daniel Bell.

The game continued as it did in the first half with both teams looking for goals. Caley had the first attempt with only 2 minutes played. Alexander (Zander) Sutherland had a pot at goal, but his shot whistled just wide of McGees left hand post.

2 minutes later Gary Manson beat the off-side trap and found himself in a straight race for the ball with keeper Smith. The Caley keeper just got to the ball first and managed to cleared the danger.

Caley drove back down-field and David Mowat got a great block in on Tokely just as he pulled the trigger for a shot.

Academy made a few changes at this stage with Shearer and Manson coming off, and Weir and Nigel MacKenzie, who was making a guest appearance, coming on.

McGee was then called into action when Wilson found himself bearing down on goal with a great chance to equalise. McGee was up to the challenge though and made a really good save.

Academy then increased their lead in the 56th minute. Richard Macadie advanced up the left hand side of the field and played a cross into Weir. Weir fell over under pressure from a defender but whilst still on the deck continued to fight for the ball and managed to pass to Martin Gunn who fired home past Smiths right hand.

3 – 1

Academy continued to push for more, and 2 minutes later David Cowie played a 45 yard pass out of defence straight onto the foot of Richard Macadie who went one-on-one with Neil Gibb, but unfortunately Richard didn’t manage to get a shot on target.

Against the real run of play Caley pulled a goal back in the 61st minute. Gary McSwegan charged in at the Academy back post and finished off a crossed ball from 8 yards out.

3 – 2

The 65th minute brought another change of personnel for the Academy. This time Shaun Sinclair and Davie Cowie came off for Martin Bain and the under 19’s captain Stuart Sinclair.

3 minutes after coming on Martin Bain made an impact when he drove up the right wing and sent in a dangerous cross come shot that almost sneaked under the Caley cross-bar, but keeper Smith was alert to the danger and managed to catch it before crossing the line.

Caley started to then pressure Academy looking to square the game, and Guy Kerr almost provided the finish, but his header was turned over the cross-bar by McGee.

The resulting corner was delivered into the Academy box and ex Highland League player Barry Wilson turned the Academy defence, made himself a little room, and rifled home to square the game.

3 – 3

The game continued to surge between one end and another, this time Gunn played the ball up the right hand side and crossed to MacKenzie who was clean through the middle, but Neil Gibb intercepted the cross and turned the ball for a corner

Young James More replaced Kevin McGee in goal in the 72 minute.

3 minutes later Barry Wilson delivered a near perfect pass for Ritchie Hart but the ball went just inches over Harts head as he came in at the back post.

Academy made a further substitution in the 77th minute, when Gary Farquhar was replaced by another of the youth team squad Bryan McKiddie.

Academy did have the ball in the back of the net again in the 78th minute. A shot from Andrew MacLeod was parried out by keeper Smith and Gunn was on hand to pick up the re-bound and slot home from close range, but unfortunately he was off-side.

The final 10 minutes was punctuated by remaining subs from both side, but the biggest cheer of the day was for Martin Gunn who was replaced by Titchie Hughes In the 82nd minute. Martin got a standing ovation as he came off the park, and Titchie was cheered on as he rolled back the years and once again took the park wearing the black and white stripes.

As the minutes of the clock ran down and it looked as if the game would finish a draw Zander Sutherland noticed More off his line and from about 35 yards out fired in a shot that dipped over the head of the young keeper. James back-peddled and just about got fingers to the ball, but it landed in the back of the net.

3 – 4

Play had hardly started again when referee Fraser blew for full time.

Full time 3 - 4

Caley D... your request in red seems sort of to assume that everybody knows how to do this!

Simply copying and pasting the link would be one way as the forum software will automatically recognise it as a link and insert the relevant code to make it clickable.

The other way is to use the "Insert Hyperlink" (looks like a globe) button when entering a new post/reply.  This is the prefered method as it prevents longggggg URL's which can sometimes break the page.

We only ask that people do it to give credit to the originating source and prevent any copyright wrangles.  The use of Red Text had the desired effect of drawing the point to people's attention, if people would prefer I used a less "Thistle Orientated" colour then please let me know  :015:
