Top Gear

Is it just the most watchable programme ever?

I dont really have an interest in cars, neither does Mrs little al, but it is just brilliant to watch for both of us. The things that Clarckson, Hammond and May get up to make me jealous. They do things that every schoolboy would like to do, drive big expensive motors, crash them, play football in them, drive them on beaches, the list is endless.

And the Dave channel shows it every dayluxhello.gif

Yep, I'd agree with that.  The other half has an interest in cars but I just watch it for the mad shenanigans.  Great team, great soundtrack and great ideas for "tests"  :021:

But little al - you failed to mention the other star who is...The Stig  :010:

It was quite good a couple of series ago but lately has seemed more like the jolly japes of a trio of ex-public schoolboys. I perhaps naively thought it was a programme about cars but the cars seem to be a side issue compared to the infantile antics of Clarkson, Hammond and May.

There's far too much emphasis in Top Gear on top speed and 0-60 times and when you hear and read about the number of fatal accidents involving young drivers they should act a bit more responsibly in this area.

What TV  needs is a decent programme looking at cars seriously - new models, designs, new motoring thechnology, concept cars, fuel economy, etc. Just something a bit more down to earth and in tune with the average viewer's motoring requirements.

totally agree mate! top gear has gone seriously down hill, badly staged and dodgy comedy, especially hammond who constantly tries to act dumb in quest to be funny

every "normal" road car gets slated, yet you have live audience rolling about in laughter when they probably have a similar car

Anyone read Clarkson's column in the Sun today? I can understand why the guy is disliked but it is for these reasons I like him, he is the IHE of the journalistic world, he tells it like it is and doesn't give a flying who he upsets.

For years we've been told that if we don't buy a stupid electric car and eat mud for the rest of our lives our children will be microwaved and the polar bears will sink.

But now, the World meteorological Organisation has announced that this year the planet will actually cool down a bit.

As a result, scientist have been forced to admit that the planet is more resiliant to the Range Rover than first thought.

In other words what we have been told for the last five years by the Government, Al Gore, Channel 4 news and hippies everywhere is a big bucket of nonsense.

The guys is fecking class. :021:

That bit's true at least  :023:

Never mind what schoolboys would like....  I'd love to do some of the things they get up to, and its a few years sisnce i was a schoolboy.

But thats the thing about Topgear its about doing the things with cars that ordinary people will never do, and if a car to you is only about A-B get a Lada and watch a different channel.

What they have done, and done well is to target a wider audience for the show and by feck they did it well.

No, he doesn't tell it as it is. He talks a load of utter bullsh*t and people who don't know any better believe him.

A few years ago he had a tirade about horses being ridden on roads and said that if people could afford a horse they could afford a trailer and a 4x4 to tow it, so they could take it some  off-road location.

There is so much stupidity and uninformed opinion in this single statement it is staggering. The man is a total tube. And probably contributed to dangerous driving around horses on roads because "they shouldn't be there".

Another thing I love about Clarkson is the way he winds up the sweety rustling PC brigade. Class act.

Classic Clarkson quotes:-

Racing cars which have been converted for road use never really work. It?s like making a hard core adult film, and then editing it so that it can be shown in British hotels. You?d just end up with a sort of half hour close up of some bloke?s sweaty face.

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary? That?s what gets you.

Now we get quite a few complaints that we don?t feature enough affordable cars on the show, so we?re kicking off tonight with the cheapest Ferrari of them all.

Owning a TVR in the past was like owning a bear. I mean it was great, until it pulled your head off, which it would. One day, it would pull your head off.

In the olden days I always got the impression that TVR built a car, put it on sale, and then found out how it handled. Usually when one of their customers wrote to the factory complaining about how dead he was.

Supercars are supposed to run over Arthur Scargill and then run over him again for good measure. They are designed to melt ice caps, kill the poor, poison the water table, destroy the ozone layer, decimate indigenous wildlife, recapture the Falkland Islands and turn the entire third world into a huge uninhabitable desert.

Listen to that noise! It [Mercedes CLS55 AMG] sounds like Barry White eating wasps.

It [Ford Escort] is powered by engines so rough, even Moulinex wouldn?t use them.

See the trees smile at me as I waft by [in a Toyota Prius]. And watch the children run into the road, because they haven?t heard me coming.

That last one I think is meant to be taken as seriously as his horse quote, which for the record I have not been able to find, the sign of true intelligence is being able to decipher the serious stuff from the tongue in cheek stuff but I guess Alimci will just have to keep going with the Dr Kawashima.

One thing I have never been accused of is being a member of the sweety rustling PC brigade.

I'm not sure I even understand why complaining about some jerk making irresponsible comments makes me one. But I guess I'll just be accused of being either lacking in true intelligence or having no sense of humour, neither of which is actually correct, so we'll have to differ on this one.

Nice post and I will agree to differ on this one.

The point I was trying to illustrate, for your reference, is that I find within Clarkson's sarcastic humour there is (more often than not) a very valid and well thought out point but he tends to wrap it up in comments aimed specifically at antagonising anyone who disagrees with him to great amusement of his fans. It is a very valid and effective way to argue as the person who you are in debate with tends to get flustered and angry losing all ability to debate the topic properly (a tactic used to great effect by a certain member of this forum) and since my attempts at drawing an argument from yourself using similar tactics have failed, I tip my hat to you sir.
