Not ridiculous if they should have been elsewhere. If they got a shout would they leave one at the bottom of the hill and then be a man short or would they take an extra 5 minutes to respond? The riot shield would no doubt be covered in scratches rendering it unfit for service. Emergency services are paid for by us to do a job. They can have a carry on when they're off duty using their own sledges.

We pay their wages, we can't sledge at work so why should they?

When I was a kid it was fairly common for the community bobby to come join in with a kick around, take a turn at batting in a game of rounders or insist on checking your rope swing was safe by trying it out. "Billy (Hargreaves) we're getting beat 7-0, can you play on our team for a bit to even it up"

Some people might see that as wasting time or not doing the job, but he knew every kid in the area and we all knew him. This allowed him to deal with us as individuals whenever we got caught up in a bit of mischief and we all knew we could approach him if we had a bit of bother or wanted to report something....somehow telling something to Billy was never the same as "grassing" to the police.

If a member of your family was in an accident and the ambulance needed a polce escort to clear the path to hospital, how would you then feel? They should be poised like a coiled cobra ready to spring into action. :(
