Socrates - Dead

Recommended Posts

The man who I always thought had one of the best names in football has died.

Brazil legend Socrates died from what sounds like septic shock or septicemia after a few stomach problems earlier this year (allegedly caused by his alcoholism in recent years). He was 57.

Remember he lit up the 82 and 86 world cups as Captain of Brazil and although they won neither tournament, his side "lost beautifully rather than won ugly" according to some tributes I have read

Shame .....

Tremendous player and amazing athlete considering the nicotine and alcohol abuse he subjected his body to.

Agree very much with the 'lose beautifully rather than win ugly comment' about 86 WC but it's a wee bit hard on Italy for 82.

Reckon Alan Rough still has nightmares?

North East man lost at sea!

According to local legend, that one is supposedly about the sinking of the RMS Titanic, where the local rag had the headline "North East man dies at sea" with the lesser tag line of "1,500 others also feared dead"!

Mind you, that still happens in the papers today - major earthquakes and so on which have major loss of life are suddenly even more pertinent in British media eyes when there is at least one or more Brits involved. C'est la vie.

Evening Times must have missed this, as he passed after the deadline!

Remember how he ran the show against Scotland in Spain.

Didn't that Brazil game involve a couple of Inverness people getting sacked from their jobs? Seem to remember a couple of guys holding up a sheet with the words painted on it "if the world is a stage, why are all the clowns from Inverness" and they were caught on camera. They had stolen the sheet from their work at the Station Hotel, and had both phoned into work sick for the week before jetting of the Spain to watch the World Cup!
