Can someone who knows about Italian football explain why away supports over there are so low, culminating in Udinese having just 1 fan at Sampdoria?

At least he saw his team win, and I'd like to think he celebrated it with a conga.

Away crowds always look small in these games....maybe fans just choose to spend all their hard earned at home to benefit own club!!!

Italian football has an ID card system meaning you need to be in possession of a photo-ID card to travel away to watch your team.  Colin Moynihan proposed similar in England during the hooligan years of the 1980s.  A lot of Ultras/supporters groups don't agree with this.  A poster on another forum said that other Udinese fans actually tried to get in at this game but weren't allowed because they didn't have an ID card.

Away supports are low in a lot of continental leagues, including Italy.  Distances between grounds are often huge meaning a 10+ bus journey.  Violence around grounds is far more common than in Scotland or England also discouraging away fans.  It's only really Ultras groups that go to long distance away games, which might put off less hardcore fans.

Tim Parks book 'A Season With Verona' is about his season going to every Hellas Verona match, home and away.  The first match is away to Bari, a 12 hour bus journey the length of Italy with a load of completely headcases, high on drugs and completely steaming.   Not everyones idea of a great day out.

It was against Genoa not Sampdoria.  (don't ya hate smart asses!)

I wonder if that'll be like sevco's support when they boycott the Utd. cup game?!

Certainly in Spain there are very few travelling fans. The distance and times of games put most off. Example distance from Madrid to Barcelona is probably close on 400 miles each way and most Spanish games kick off at 8pm on a Sunday night.

I do like this story though http://www.sport360.com/blog/just-one-away-fan-sees-udinese-win-sampdoria
