It's perfectly simple...

Why can't you divide a number by 0?

For one thing, when you divide one number by another, you expect the result to be another number. Look at the sequence of numbers 1/(1/2), 1/(1/3), 1/(1/4), ... . Notice that the bottoms of the fractions are 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, ..., and that they're going to zero. If there's a limit to this sequence, we would take that number and call it 1/0, so let's see if there is.

Well, the sequence turns out to be 2, 3, 4, ..., and that goes to infinity. Since infinity isn't a real number, we don't assign any value to 1/0. We just say it's undefined.

But let's say we did assign a value. Let's say that infinity is a real number, and 1/0 is infinity. Then look at the sequence 1/(-1/2), 1/(-1/3), 1/(-1/4), ..., and notice again that the denominators -1/2, -1/3, -1/4, ..., are going to zero. So again, we would want the limit of this sequence to be 1/0. But looking at the sequence, it simplifies to -2, -3, -4, ..., and it goes to negative infinity. So which would we assign to 1/0? Negative infinity or positive infinity? Instead of just assigning one willy nilly, we say that infinity isn't a number, and that 1/0 is undefined.

What is something divided by zero?

It has been claimed that the answer to that is "infinity", but that would also involve accepting that all numbers are equal.

Let's say 1/0 = infinity. so 1/0 = infinity/1.

Cross multiply.

1 x 1 = 0 x infinity.

0 x anything = 0.

so 1 x 1 = 1 = 0.

Add 1 to each side.

2=1.

Add 1 to each side.

3=2 etc etc.

So all numbers are equal.

Now we are getting in to dangerous territory....the problem with using deductive reasoning in an axiomatic system is that the "proof" is only as good as the axioms with which it is started.  As Infinity is, by definition, without bounds, then it cannot be assigned a value which makes it pretty useless as an axiom when it comes to proving the value or relationship between other numbers.

Ah the A82.

Whose idea was it to construct that ludicrous glorified lay-by at Abriachan to allow slow moving vehicles to pull in.

I demand to know the capital cost divided by the number of vehicles to use it.

What is something divided by zero?

I'm going to use the lay by tommorrow, to simplify the equation.

Coincidences

You know the type of thing:

Tesco ?give? you 5ppl from their exorbitant fuel price when you spend a fortune in their grocery store. But just around the same time they sneak in a fuel price increase.

The 5ppl doesn?t last but the increase does!

Sugaring the pill I suppose, well I?d like to put 2lbs of sugar in their tank.

Oh and their pump card readers don?t work worth a (ahem a bit carried away there) very well.

Oh and their air dispensers are never in commission.

David Byrne has a name for them.

Serving suggestions...

Ever noticed these days just about every conceivable food product now comes with a serving suggestion on the tin or on the wrapper.

My wife bought a sponge cake the other day - on the wrapper was a picture of the aforementioned cake on a plate, with a knife..

Jeeeez..  :symbol_question: :symbol_exclaim01:  I'd never have thought of serving it like that....  :017:

Why is it always the same collection of bores that post on the Two Word Story or Word Association threads...?

Do some of the regulars on here feel it's beneath their dignity to post on there..? It should be compulsary to make some kind of a contribution now and again....  :018:

Scotty : What about making it part of the logging in process..? - ie - No one gets to view the main boards until they've posted something on these two threads....

That might brighten things up a bit....  :023:
